As memory serves me, it really wasn't until after they went public that their frontpage as well as search results pages became littered with ads. They have scaled back a bit on that lately, but the bottom line is that when all your investors care about is your bottom line, bad things happen. Ads start springing up, they come up with the brilliant idea of making you pay to be listed, and they start cutting those dratted R&D dollars. Why improve something to make it last for a long time when you can buy low, sell high, and then make a quick buck. Hopefully though, Google will have enough sense not to let the investors call the shots.
for a moment I thought the article was about Linux Zealots and Windows Fanboys, and I was wondering how anyone was going to exploit those aberrations to profit
easy, put the two in a room together, generate heat energy from friction
strange how france is always pushing mandrake, germany was until recently pushing suse, and all of a sudden the EU starts looking for ways to go after microsoft...far be it from either of those countries to ever get into shady deals though
Look what happened to Yahoo when they went public. An IPO is not a good thing. Letting a bunch of Wall Street financial people have a say in what to do with your tech company is just a bad idea.
An opinion piece written by a guy who said he used to work down the hall from a guy who said he knew all about this. This sounds more like a review for a book than an actual article. Nothing like a nice post to get all the lemmings whining about loss of life, etc.
And yes, the my OS is better war is the technological equivalent of standing on the playground screaming "my dad can beat up your dad!" Some OS' do things better than others. Don't see why everyone has to get in a bitching contest about them all the time.
Aside from this all being hashed over yesterday, people will generally use whichever search engine is better. Yahoo once had market dominance until Google proved to be a far better search engine. Microsoft will achieve dominance if they provide beter search results than Google. There's not many ways to sneakily force people to use your search engine, aside from defaulting the search button to your own search engine, which MS does already anyway.
First you have to hunt down the link for the free player, similiar to what winamp's doing now, then while you're installing the thing it has about 50 screens of email crap you have to tell it not to add you to, and most of those the only options that are checked are way down in the list where you have to scroll down to catch it. They have all the moral turpitude of Gator (its spyware! - only true geeks will get that) as far as I'm concerned.
Wow, everything in that post is so entirely wrong that its frightening.
Its amusing to note that most people are whining about their personal freedoms being attacked and blah blah, yet they have absolutely no qualms about attacking people because they don't understand their religion. Hitler would be proud of you.
And operating systems are not natural monopolies?
NO! You can't choose to go out and get Bob's Electricity vs Larry's Electricity. Its a naturalized monopoly. You don't have a choice of utility company, you do have one about which OS you run. Jeez.
Microsoft isn't a monopoly, per say, they're just really successful. If Microsoft were truly a monopoly you would only be running your Microsoft applications on your Microsoft operating system that was running on your Microsoft hardware. Back when Ma Bell existed, you couldn't even buy your own phone, you had to lease it from the phone company...now that's a monopoly. Microsoft may be market dominant, but they're not the only choice out there. You can always put linux, os2, beos, or whatever else on your pc. You can run 3rd party applications on your windows operating system. Plus, no one's forcing you to use it.
Normally everyone whines that the minorities are the only ones ever sent out to fight, etc etc. Now that it fits your needs, all of a sudden its a mostly white army. Pick which tree you wanna hug and stick with it.
Whilst I agree that the patent is absurd and should never happen - it is worth noting that if Eolas go only after Microsoft, then this could get the other non-IE browsers a significant leg up in market share.
And when they decide to go after Mozilla or Opera because they didn't get enough money from suing Microsoft...by then those other browsers will have a bigger market share, according to your bizarre world anyway. What's bad for one company is bad for all of them.
If I went out and started a car company and called it Dord, I would expect to see some legal action headed my way. There's no arguing that they aren't trying to get people to associate their product with Windows, even though its not.
I think Nintendo will stay pretty secure in its market, since its games are geared towards children mostly (think MarioKart, etc). They also have an exclusive license to all of these, so I don't think they need to worry about it. Same goes for Sony, there's so many good games that you can only get for the PS2 (think Gran Turismo) that they don't really care what Microsoft will come out with. Also, in Japan, all of the Xbox's sold there mysteriously started scratching the dvds, so retailers stopped selling them. No way to penetrate that market.

Misappropriate it like any politician would?

yeah, sorry, I was thinking of divx, so sue me. (Unless you're Darl McBride reading this)

Utilities are what's referred to as naturalized monopolies quickdraw

three sightless brothers who 'have devoted their lives to proving they can out-think, out-program, and out-hack anyone with vision
I'm sure the judge will take that into consideration.
They make software for macs and have a mac business unit. I hope someone can get some shots of macs being unloaded from a truck.

for the absolute dumbest comment I've seen today. In a long time actually.
You'd think the enemy could spot an 18 ton vehicle trying to hide behind a tree.
or it sets the precedent that ridiculous patents should be thrown out. Guess that never factored into your grand conspiracy though, eh?

Because that car's from 1936...aka before suing became the national pasttime.
