It's ALL virtual. The sooner you realise that the sooner you can stop being a slave to money.

Tell that to Chase, Wachovia, Discover, and Citibank for me will ya? I'd sure like to have my virtual credit card debt cleared. And while you're at it, do something about my student loans and car payment. Thank you, sir.

  3. RIMs aren't only for email on RIM Loses NTP Case, To Pay $53 Million · · Score: 3, Interesting

Some of you are saying these RIM devices are useless and who needs wireless email anyway, but you're missing the point that they can do a LOT more than that. RIM has (had?) an SDK available for free download on their website in the past so they obviously intended people to develop their own apps for these things. My company (IBM) is one of them. I don't use it as much now, but for at least a year I was depending on one of these things to support me as a technician in the field. Our whole service-call system runs on our RIMs and it saves soooo much time and headache. We receive, update and close calls with a few clicks/turns of the thumbwheel as well as filling out the form to send back to IBM detailing what happened (used for billing/parts tracking among other things). Without these, I would have to either call a human being or dial in with my laptop. Two things that aren't much fun when you're driving all over the place trying to get work done.

I was curious about what this settlement means to our use of these devices, but then I was reading through and saw how people think that RIM will most likely license the technology. Losing these things would suck for us techs.

It does happen. I used to do in-home pc repair for Gateway, Sears, etc and on more than one occassion someone would tell me that they had called Microsoft directly for technical support. Usually, the client is quite mad by that point because their PC vendor's tech support wasn't able to help them and didn't like the idea of wiping the computer and reloading the OS from the recovery CD. Some home users refuse to let their PC get the best of them, I guess.

  6. stable (dedicated) game servers on Hints for Planning a Network Gaming Marathon? · · Score: 2, Informative

I've been involved with a couple lan parties, the biggest being 15 people and along with the aforementioned patching (have a fileserver with all the latest patches for the games you plan to host...it works great) the biggest problem was with the gameserver crashing. The first time around we had people hosting and playing on the same machine, and it would crash more than we'd like (both windows and mac). The second time around we set up a few game servers on the linux box and things were MUCH MUCH better....in fact, they never crashed once. Nothing will piss people off more than the quake3/CS/etc server going down in the middle of a session...well, maybe a power outage ;)
