Privacy concerns...This came to mind quite quickly, but then I thought if scientists, academics and developers are very concerned about privacy issues in building any new systems that work with the internet, this is a better outcome than the one we have today i.e. security is not even considered in ip v4. We do live in a Democracy so the said developers scientists and academics won't get into trouble developing such a system, it'll also take government some time to get around any security and privacy built in to any new systems. The present system we have now is the worst of all situations any kind of privacy concerns we have will have been exploited, plus some others that maybe we haven't even thought up. Do you think I'm thinking correctly here or is there any thing I have over looked? Can we already be located in a sentient office way with out our knowledge or am I paranoid.
.Do you make your own clothes? How did you find out "shit do my clothes look that bad". "Am I so used to them that I think there Ok when every one thinks there strange" I wonder?!?
Very interesting and useful information.Or are some kind of super mole planted here Microsoft to spread FUD through out the free and open source software world. I am wearing my tin foil hat so you cant mess with my head and I KNOW YOU HAVE ALIENS LOCKED UP IN HANGERS!!!! THE TRUTH WILL OUT!!!!!!!!!
I noticed this guy put the Ximian and KDE as separate posts. Did you not think that we could invade this flimsy partition and engage in open warfare.;@)
Only joking not a flame
Open source technology - there really is no way to ensure that the third world would get second rate technology using free software, and where will the NSA put all their back door
If there was to be a big brake through in this feild then it would positive (and much of it is) there is also a down side. If some of the sciences that evolved from this were usefull in understanding how large groups of people behaved, then this extra information would be used to control us.
This is sort of like giving a useful purpose to crackers and leting them feel good about their life and how much they contribute to the community.
Spammers uselly leave web site address for you to go to, or even a "if you would like to not receive any more emails please contact us at some-email@spammeraddress.com" so that they can confirm that they have a good active email account to spam.
We could have a site where the the address spammers are advertising could be placed (much like one crackers use to show whose site has been hacked). Our freindly noble minded community spirted cracker could then, at the beginning of his day, peruse this site and select a spammers site to bring the good news to.
I was also confused over the.NET strategy and then I read this artical on osnews.com http://www.osnews.com/story.php?news_id=686.
To quote some of the artical for those who cant be bothered to go.
"NET is a new way of working things out when using your computer..NET the Framework is a collection of new APIs, programming languages and development tools that serve this "new way" of doing things. The new APIs are highly object-oriented, and the objects used are accessible by any supported language (VB.NET, ASP.NET, C/C++/C# and recently, even Java). This is a pretty revolutionary feature, having objects accessible by any language.
With.NET's new APIs and libraries, applications are just hosts for a series of objects. Now you can load a given functionality found in any object to any.NET application. For example, if you are writing a Microsoft Word document and you insert an image, you might want to apply a certain filter to that image before finishing your document. Word, however, is not really an image manipulation application. Well, with.NET-enabled applications you can load a certain functionality from another installed application (or more importantly, through the web!), perform the specific function and save down your Word document locally or remotely. The thing is, applications are not simple applications anymore. They are hosts of a larger database of functionalities that they can be loaded at any time (for a fee or for free) through the web or locally. Similar feature-set is possible through Corba or OLE, as I said, but they are not standardized, they are difficult to integrate (a real headache for programmers), and they are not cross-platform."
Given the posibilites, new revenue streems to continue Microsoft growth, and the winning of OS wars (.Net for the Linux kernal) it would seem a big mistake on Microsoft's part to not fully support this way of working.
This is a nice idea however and if Microsoft dosn't persue this new strategy some one else will e.g. IBM for example ( just go to google and type Globus).
