Being open source is no silver bullet; for example see this thread about Exhausting all your memory - the latest reported bug in Apache.
This is a remote denial of service attack which could be carried out fairly easily upon a LAN, or with a decent connection/zombie network over the net.
True it's not relevent to the jukebox question as it's a streamer, but it is free, open and portable.. For bonus points it's in (unstable) Debian GNU/Linux, SuSe, and in the FreeBSD ports collection.
Keyboard navigation in tabs for Mozilla is Ctrl+PageUP/PageDown.
There are a couple of issues, if you have a n open tab which contains a site which failed to load Ctrl+W doesn't seem to close it, for example.
I'd love to have a gui for remapping keys under Mozilla, I've seen a guide to remapping some keys, but I've never managed to remap 'next tab'/'previous tab'...
Yes that's what distributions like Immunix do, but notice that even with the extra protection they offer they still update their packages everytime a new hole is discovered.
Stackguard isn't a magic bullet, and isn't gonna stop you from being 0wn3ed. Typically it just means that the released exploits won't work, and that's also the case for odd architechtures like Alpha - most of the released exploits are for intel, so avoiding that gives you as much protection as the stack guard compiler.
The same with the no-exec patch from Solar Designer, which Linus keeps vetoing for Linux; it gives you protection from the commonly released exploits, but via return-into-libc attacks, etc, you can still be rooted.
Use it if you like, but don't think it protects you completely..
True, I'd not considered this. VESA is a level above anything I've ever done before - I guess this just goes to support my point, that the drivers for the cards is what is hard for X
Why don't we have a choice with our window system?
It all falls down to hardware.
Writing a nicely abstracted windowing system capable of putting pixels on the screen, drawing arcs and boxes and performing most of the primitive operations necessary for building up the basic widgets is trivial.
The hard part is supporting all the multitude of graphics cards out there. Now granted if you stick to a standard like VESA you should be OK for 75% of all cards - but you'd be lacking all support for 3D acceleration, etc.
(To put this into perspective I created a windowing system in x86 assembly under mod 13h in a few weeks back when I was young and adventurous;)
I've been doing something similar to this via the online blogging communities at LiveJournal
LiveJournal, like a lot of these online diarie thingys, has a field where you can enter the music you're currently listening to when you make new entries.
My system takes your username and grabs the most recent 50 tracks you've entered and trys to compare these tunes with the music that other people have entered - if you get a match then it will display some random tracks from that matching users most recent entries.
It appears to work well - but I haven't quite reached a critical mass of users.
taggants and the consequent legislation and regulation and tracking of bullets would increace the costs of gun ownership but not the cost of guns, thus favoring the quality manufactureres.
So they're not following the razor blade model - Selling guns cheaply, and making a killing on the bullets?
This is part of the reason why I hate recruitment people, ostensibly they're there to provide a firm with competent, skilled, candidates for a role.
But too often they're not sufficiently clueful that they just can't.
I guess the reason is that if you are technically minded then you'd get more money working as a real IT person.
I know that by the time you attend the interview proper you're skills must be tested properly, but to be interviewed by a recruitment agency in such a bad way doesn't reflect well on either themselves, or the firms they're representing.
The questions I have been asked by random agencies are part of the reason I hold them in so little regard.
In a face-to-face interview with a company I've usually done very well. (To the extent that I've been offered a position at every interview I've agreed to attend).
However the majority of agencies appear to be technically clueless... There'll be a few keywords they'll focus in on, without any apparent understanding.
I remember the last one I had with particular amusement - applying for a sysadmin role, and saying yes I knew DNS, Email (sendmail), Databases (oracle), Linux (redhat/debian), and webservers (apache). With a straight voice and no hint of irony the telephone interviewer asked me if I'd ever used TCP/IP!
Each time I've been in this situation I've decided that if I'm unemployed for more than a few weeks I'll setup an employment agency. With competent questions, and local contacts lookign for work (ie friends) I'm sure I could undercut most of the "biggie" agencies locally, and do OK.
This is just another reason to avoid agencies, they truly are a parasitic bunch.
Over here in the UK I was looking for work last year, and scoured the local agencies. Many, many times I'd apply for a position only to be told eventually that it didn't exist. The agency just wanted to know how many Perl Programmers were around.
Worse than that, though, is the way that several agencies will advertise the same position with subtly different descriptions - and you don't realise until you get called for an interview. In one case an agency told me that they wouldn't put me forward for a position I was applying for because I'd also registered with another agency!
I've started keeping track of bad (and the rare good) agencies in Edinburgh - if you're local feel free to look at the list and submit your experiences.
(Yes that was a plug, and yes the section needs updating)
She loves the things i love and she has the same feeling i do
Unless she's lying too..
That's the thing, once you start modifying what you say you like for other people you can never stop... and you don't know if they're doing it too.
In relationships honesty really is the best way forward; besides if she knows you don't like watching something she does, for example, you get brownie points for going along too;)

Can I just say GNUMP3d ?

OK I'm biased I wrote it... I admit it!

OT I know .. but I could say exactly the same thing about Debian.
I've used FreeBSD a little, but not enough to appreciate it's strengths I guess.
(My initial impressions were raised by the firey screensaver upon the console, and the way it printed your uptime when you rebooted it!)
My answering machine was once reprogrammed by my cat ..
The outgoing message was changed to say "*scrabble* *scratch* *hiss* *thump* ... pause .. *MIOW*"
I almost wish I'd left hte message as it's a damn sight more interesting than mine.
The funny thing is that I didn't realise and nobody told me for several weeks!
Now even for April fools day this is a bit much, this story has now been posted three times today!

Give it a go yourself

D'oh!
Thanks for the link .. I actually searched Amazon.co.uk before posting my message and got no matches. It' turns up just fine on Amazon.com.
*sigh*
The Last Starfighter was the first film I ever saw at a cinema.
I'm hoping it will be out upon DVD sometime soon..

The only movie I've seen her in was Cruel Intentions - but I really enjoyed that.
Scooby Doo I didn't see, and have no intention of watching, but after Cruel Intentions, and Buffy itself, I do think she's a good actress.
She could do well in films in the future .. she has talent and she's a babe ;)
Most of the obvious sites have already been posted, but I'd like to add two more to the list:
No need .. not with /.'s patent pending 'dupe' mechanism.
Wow - Ctrl+Alt+F still takes you to the FishCam!
I remember the first time I discovered this by accident!
Interestingly I cannot right click upon an 'about:foo' link and select 'Open in new tab'.
I wonder if this is a bug, or a deliberate feature..?
(Debian unstable, version 1.2.1-9 if it matters)
And this is a good thing!
I like playing strategy/board games upon my computer, but there's not much pleasure to be had playing a computer at chess anymore - I always lose.
The day I lose every game of go too is the day I switch to another game, one which I have a 50/50 chance of winning at :)
Sounds like Red Dwarf...
