Why always announce you are going to do something, in the date-to-be-determined future, instead of just unveiling it the day it's due? The Way MS is doing it, if there's a delay, you look bad. Google announces it, and then provides a link where you can try it. I think that gets them a lot of positive buzz - a lot more than a multi-million dollar ad campaign, like for MSN Search IMHO.
That they included Slashdot in the news services. Right up there with the New York Times and Wired News. All stuff that I read, and pretty cool that Google reads them too!
My other problem with iTunes is that it keeps the original file in its same location when you drag it into the libarary, so you've got to really keep track of what you've added when you're adding files from... ahem... legal, creative commons downloading services that you've downloaded. Otherwise you'll have duplicate files all over the place and clog up your hard drive.
Oh, and try dragging your library in a second time. That was a fun hour of manually selecting all the duplicate songs and deleting them.
This summary makes the most sense I've seen in a long time:) It gives you the facts while leaving the opinions to the READERS.
I think that what the parent was looking for though was maybe an attempt to dig through the document and find an incriminating fact, or maybe even a fact that doesn't seem very incriminating at first, but is when correlated with other facts.
That's not presenting opinion, it's digging for facts that are below the surface. That's the real job of journalists. Ever hear of Woodward and Bernstein?
(And for the record, I'm talking about the Italian paper that did the story, not the/. poster.)
In other words DRM only provides protection against people who are not normally interested in abusing the video stream that are protected by it.
Umm... then who were all those people sharing music on the P2Ps? Or making copies of CDs, and before that, tapes? A lot of people are interested in it, but the easier it is to do, the more people there are who are going to copy content.
that is, not protected at all
Maybe not for you or me, but the average user has no idea how to record or rip streamed audio. Just like DVDs can be copied and burned, but not by the average user - it's still an obstacle.
when I can just download the same content in a proper format and use fast forward and rewind it, pause it,... in any way I like while watching it full screen in good quality?
Sounds great, unless you're listening to a live broadcast. Or something that content providers want you to listen to, but not own.
Personally, I think it would be cool to see them create a "bonus" world where you could play through the ORIGINAL game with the new graphics and stuff... kinda like an Easter Egg.
That's a GREAT idea. Also leads me to wonder why isn't this done more often? Sure, we get the old games, but give me a port of the old game with the old graphics. I was hoping beyond hope that Doom III would provide the same thing, but it seems like there's no luck. Anyone have any examples of modern sequels redoing levels from their predecessors with the new engines?
I fully agree. The "Americanization" of BBC shows is WRONG. Have you seen NBC's version of "The Office"? IT IS TERRIBLE. The timing that made the UK version work so well has been completely dumb'd down for the US populace, just to make a few bucks. Its sad.
I know this is really off topic, but I really like the new Office. I should say that I was a HUGE fan of the original - and I'm a Canadian of British parents.
While nothing could top the original, I think the new show really hits a good (and American) tone - the Americanized bits weren't just done with a "find and replace" it makes it accessable to those who are averse to seeing foreign accents and ugly teeth on the screen.
And don't go bashing the US populace. It's produced The Simpsons, Seinfeld, and the Daily show. And the UK's produced Benny Hill. I'm just saying - both cultures have their hits and misses.
Why oh why can't I change the favicons, either on my linkbar or my bookmarks?
I'm a really visual person, and I find favicons the best way to browse through my links. It's annoying when a site doesn't have one, if they have one I don't like, or when they apply a random one (Netscape icon on the Toronto Star page???)
What I'd really love is a plugin that would allow me to change the favicons on my linkbar and in bookmarks. Also visual bookmark folders would be really nice too - like an icon for sports sites, one for school sites, one for games, etc
I don't really mind what the graphics look like, but I have to ask the question, what's the point of this game? I have CIV 2 already... why should I download this?
Do you own any DVDs? They're DRM'd, in that you can't copy them (unless you use widely available cracking software.) Same with console games. Digital rights management is everywhere, and most of us accept it out of necessity. But there will always be ways of getting around it for those people (like us) willing to put in the extra work.
Personally, I don't really care that much about DRM, as long as it's designed well, like the iTMS. I don't know if I "own" the songs or not, but I don't really care - it's never really restricted what I've wanted to do with my music. And if they do make it hard, I'll just find a crack to get around it.
I find music streams to be much more useful for discovering new music (here's one from a couple of weeks ago that I immediately went out and bought).
I totally agree. However, I also found a lot of good music by reading about an artist in a magazine, or hearing about it from a friend, and going and downloading a song or two of theirs. Kazaa is basically useless for finding music now, thanks to the sabotage of the music companies, but I'd be willing to shell out 99 cents or two at iTunes to find out if I like an artist.
Of course, these days I just tend to borrow a friend's CD and rip it to my computer... which is worse than the Napster days, when I'd download one or two and buy the album afterward. So, sorry RIAA, looks like your tactics are kind of backfiring... (on me anway.)
I don't know why more Slashdotters don't appreciate the OC. Seth Cohen is a nerd! And he gets laid (sometimes.) Okay, he never talks about Linux, but he talks about comics a lot. And the music's good... not just your regular teeny-bop stuff. They've had The Walkmen, The Shins... definitely a nerd show.
2. A decent captain. One with presence and charisma, more like Kirk or Picard than that cranky bitch on her period, or that librarian on 'Enterprise'. He needs to be male, he needs to have gumption, he doesn't need to bother about finding the most moral and politically-correct solution to everything.
Sorry, but that's the problem Enterprise faced. They tried to make Jonathan Archer too impulsive, always going with his gut instinct. He just wasn't refined enough. He didn't quote Shakespeare or really ponder things like Kirk or Picard. Kirk and Picard were pretty unwavering in their morals, but they were certainly able to discuss the details of those morals. Of course, when there was a decision that needed to be made, they made it.
Remember when media files used to be safe? When we only needed to worry about files with.exe and.zip and a few others containing viruses or malware? Even before the DRM stuff in Media Player, MS added the ability for video clips to launch web pages. Gee, great idea. Did they never think that people could have exploited that?
Is it really worth sacrificing the safety of media files so that video players could launch web pages and other code? Another example of Microsoft trying to add usability, whlile sacrificing security. There's no way they couldn't have known about this security flaw.
My question is, what does Microsoft care which browser the end user uses?
If people pay for Windows, and IE comes with Windows, then why do they care whether people install Firefox on their Windows box? Do they make any more money from people using IE over Firefox if they already have windows?
Its in beta. When they release it, you can complain then. Maybe they haven't integrated into the Safe Suggest yet. Did I mention its in beta, and not done yet?
Why is there always a comment like this? Yes, it's in Beta, but isn't the point of Beta to discuss the product's flaws, or criticisms about it? And then maybe when it's 'done' we won't have to 'complain' as much. And whoever said it was even a criticism? Just an observation to provoke discussion.
... it doesn't include dirty words. I know, I may be a little immature, but it's almost always the first thing I try on anything like this. There's not even a way of turning 'safe suggest' on or off or anything. Even such innocuous (and popular!) words like 'nude' aren't suggested. What if you're searching for nude models for your art class, or the great nudes? It's just interesting... Google is becoming very corporate in terms of filtering out content these days.

Now if only I could actually code...

Searched for "traktor" on Google and Google Suggest (like in the example) and got nothing. Anyone got a live link as an example?

One thing they didn't mention was microchips, from which most of this stuff, including the Internet, stems. I think it will be #1.
If people pay for Windows, and IE comes with Windows, then why do they care whether people install Firefox on their Windows box? Do they make any more money from people using IE over Firefox if they already have windows?
His girlfriend's pretty hot!
