Man, when you're 40, what else are you gonna do with your time? Either it's toy trains, or gardening, or collecting miniatures or some other hobby to fill out the spare time in your meaningless life.

Anyway, I'm glad these people are taking the time to do nerd-friendly hobbies. I'd rather look at this than some garden.

I remember I used to do doodle sketches on my notebook in the ninth grade for ships based on the other letters. I actually drew an S-Wing though!

PS NOTHING beats the Y-Wing. That thing rocks.

    Funny, but true.

Google is (mostly) text-only. And they actually have a mandate to make sure that their pages will load quickly, even on slow modem connections. Is it really necessary to send CDs out for people to install when the Google flagship page is less than 30K?

Keep in mind the land values and cost of living in New York City... I highly doubt that kind of bandwidth is that cheap there, or London or other expensive cities.

I find it odd that at $21/a month, they still have to give away the modem?? I'd be more than willing to buy a modem to use. Hell, it's even better than my broadband ISP, which makes me pay them monthly for the modem use.

Mr. Q. America: "Now I can tell the world what I think about golf!" (Editor's note: Yes, I have a blog.)

The thing is, I have to wonder if people care enough about the security of their systems to go through the hassle of securing them. I have a DSL line run through a router with a built in firewall, which I only have because I share access with my roommates. One of my roommates however, feels the need for an additional firewall on his desktop, just in case. This always causes issues when playing network games, and we essentially can't share files with each other. My point is, sure, if someone went to the effort, I guess they could hack my computer, but why would anyone target me specifically? I don't really have any sensitive information on my computer either, and I keep backups of my writing, just in case. So I just can't justify the inconvenience of a desktop firewall. If securing a wireless network creates similar hassles, I imagine that many home users just wouldn't see the point. Of course, if it were easy to set-up and didn't put restrictions on file-sharing between computers or create problems networking games, I imagine more people might just feel like setting it up.

The thing is, this brings up a somewhat serious point. I've proofread professionally in the past, and I know that it's hard and nobody's perfect at doing it. An open approach might work with software, because anyone can easily test it: there are bugs in the program. But without a wiki-type format (www.wikipedia.org) who is there to make sure it's proofread properly? If this is proofread incorrectly and distributed to schools and stuff, I have to worry about the quality level of the texts students are learning with if they use the free texts. I have in fact read a lot of public domain texts, and find typos and grammatical errors to be fairly common in them. Would a wiki-format help open texts? (Or maybe a moderated wiki-format.)

I'm in the market for an MP3 player, and though the new Apple one looks really cool and small, if the Create one has the same or better features for cheaper, I'll definitely go for that one. I think that's the problem with Apple: cool looking products, sure, but way more expensive. Oh, and let me guess, can you not get firmware upgrades for the iPod? Because of course we all know how Apple feels about upgrades...
