    I set up another machine with 6x 1TB HDDs, mounted them, enabled them in samba, connect to them on any of my other machines. If you need redundancy, set up RAID or svn/cvs for code revisioning.

    Maybe I misunderstand the question but this seems pretty straightforward for those that might frequent this site. Did the option, "file and repository server" seem too obvious? Why use an online tool or some special software to share between systems? Why store the same data on multiple machines? Just mount a shared drive and read/write to/from it.

    I live in Syracuse and the winters are really not that bad. As the parent stated, the snow either comes in gradually where it isn't an issue or in huge piles where you deal with it for a couple days and then it just sits on the side of the road. Also, as parent also said, the last few years have been warm and it usually melts pretty quickly. This past winter had a lot of rain which gets rid of snow pretty well.

    However, as someone living in Syracuse with all my jobs since graduating college were in the Utica/Rome area; there isn't too many jobs in Software Development. There aren't many jobs in Utica/Rome, either, but if you want to find a job in Central NY (it's only called upstate by people from NYC. Messina is Upstate.) you need to look from Buffalo to Albany. If you can't relocate, you'll be looking for a while...

    I can attest to Syracuse, NY. I live there and I had to take a job in Rome/Utica, NY (~hour drive away). I graduated college in nov. 07 with a BS in CS from the Rochester Institute of Technology. I got a part-time tech support job starting in jan 08. a full time web dev job in utica in april 08. then moved to software dev at Griffiss AFB in april 09. Unfortunately, Rome is a pretty crappy city so I'm commuting :/

    What's stopping them from designing an artificial tree that uses photosynthesis to convert CO2 into C + O2? (or whatever the output should be) We could use the energy as a type of solar power source. I'm not saying it'd be simple to do or possible at the moment but if they could, I could see this being useful. However, just to capture CO2 and liquify it, seems like a waste of time. I'd rather see them cut CO2 emissions by 800 tons/day per 20 cars.

    And legalizing all drugs would allow people feel safe when seeking treatment instead of fearing that they'd be prosecuted. I'm also a firm believer that Health and Safety is a State Right. I'd just assume get rid of the FDA and DEA entirely. But that's another topic... however, another reason why the US gov't shouldn't make drugs illegal; they have no right to do so. (Not that rights ever stopped them before)

    What about passengers? Just because the car is moving means the passengers aren't allowed to watch TV? Now if they use seat sensors to determine if someone else is in the car first, I would find that as a suitable compromise. However, I'd rather see a suspended license law if caught driving recklessly while the TV is on or something. Not just a ticket, but suspend their license. Most people would think twice if1 strike and they're out.

    That's one thing I always had an issue with over geothermal. What happens when we pump out all the heat from the planet? It solidifies and our magnetic field shuts off? (unless you believe that new thing about the ocean currents) I read somewhere that we'd have ~9000 years of geothermal at current world usage levels of energy. No, it wouldn't affect anyone we might ever know and who knows if we would last long enough to hit the limit. However, what if solidification of the core is shorter than that figure? Do we have the right to screw over possible future generations?

    The we-might-slow-down-all-the-wind issue is kind of the same but more short-term. The only viable source of energy is solar. It'll run out when the Earth is well beyond uninhabitable. We don't screw over anyone in the process. Well, unless you count mining for panel materials...

    I wish game companies would tell the ESRB to stick it. They're unregulated, inconsistent, and parents buy their kids games regardless of their ESRB rating most of the time. I would rather see a more useful rating system where they rate different categories separately. Give each game a 4-digit code; Violence, Sexual Content, Language, and Realism. 0-5 for each category. 0000 would be like Strawberry Shortcake's Magical Adventure and 5555 would be Duke Nukem Meets Leisure Suit Larry.

    This is the biggest issue I have with these lawsuits. It's fairly easy for a technically-savvy user to spoof MAC/IP Addresses. Hell, there's even routers and NICs that allow you to change their MAC address without any tinkering.

    I'm not saying that I condone her alleged actions or not, but I always believed in the innocent until proven guilty idea and that the prosecution must prove your guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. Maybe the layman doesn't understand how trivial hijacking someone's account is (be it spoofing or a botnet virus or what have you) but it seems like reasonable doubt to me.

    A college I used to work at has a wide-format printer and because of this, it has a small hard drive for caching. (40GB or something) Someone outside of our school's network got into it and set up a warez sharing FTP. It's a printer, do you think we'd check it's hard drive often? Should we be liable for breaching copyrights? I would say no.

    I went to school for CS and while I was in school, I had a student sys admin job in one of the colleges on campus. Once in a while I'd run into some odd problem but most of it was easy. Now, the really tough jobs are the ones I come up with on my own computer.

    You're right, anyone who actually knows anything about computers will only have problems that make no sense at all. Ignorant users are easy, savvy users are a nightmare....

    The only thing I'd get the i7 over the phenom ii's for is triple channel ram. That's the only upside I see with Intel chips.

    I don't have Comcast (anymore) but when I was living in CT I was privileged (/s) enough to have them as my only choice. This was at the time when they first started filtering BT traffic; I never had an issue so it might be a subsection of their consumer base.

    Also, I have road runner now and I don't have a static IP. I just have a dyndns.org hostname I use coupled with their IP update tool that keeps my IP updated. they have free accounts as long as they stay updated. ie. deleted after 30 days without an update but I get nice emails reminding me 5 days in advance. He might be doing the same?

    These DLC monopolies are crap. I paid just as much for my PS3 copy as someone did for their 360 copy and I get the shaft. I know Microsoft paid handsomely for it but if they're going to do this, just make the whole game exclusive so I could have just bought the 360 version at the beginning.

    Oh, and as someone else stated, GFWL is crap. It's the same reason I haven't purchased the Fallout 3 DLC.

    The Air Force has QA'd Debian and Ubuntu that I know of but they're a couple major versions behind.

    I know, in our group, that we can choose which OS we use based on personal preference. Also, we write Java apps so we also need to be cross-platform so we have some mac guys, a couple linux guys, but mostly pc guys.

    But the military does QA more than just Microsoft apps. However, they do still require exchange but have webmail set up for people who can't run windows (as their OS or through emulation which most of the linux guys in our group do)

    The place I work at (Air Force) runs a different copy of Vista than you can actually buy. It has to be thoroughly tested and OK'd by the Air Force before they are even allowed to install it on any machines on the network.

    The Army probably does the same. Rolling out Vista now is like they started rolling it out on release date. They couldn't have rolled it out any sooner if they wanted to. Same for Windows 7. The earliest they'll see it ok'd for use is probably two years from release. Why people make a big deal out of it? Probably because they're ignorant and want to make a fuss.

    I would have to somewhat disagree with you.

    I would say most technical people like the /.ers would understand anything you tried to explain to them at least to a point where they know what's going on. ie. a mechanic explains that the head gasket blew and is spewing oil everywhere. We could understand what is happening.

    Now, if I try to explain a similar problem to an average user, I would say they could pick up about the same regarding their car (but might not remember it like we would) but if you tell them something about their computer, they turn into a 4 year old and just repeat keywords they know until you leave.


    Me: what is the problem?
    Them: I need more memory
    Me: How much do you have?
    Them: 500 megs
    Me: You mean your hard drive has 500 megs free?
    Them: It's 500 megs.
    Me: Or do you have 500 mb ram?
    Them: All I know is that there's 500 of them.
    Me: ffs.... get out of the chair and walk away. I'll let you know when I'm done

    Speaking of ludicrous math...

    I was at work talking with a co-worker and I was talking about Portal and how you can fall through one portal, come out the other just above the first, and then fall through again. Now, if this were possible, you could get something going very fast. Then I remembered Terminal Velocity and just said we'd put it in a vacuum first.

    So, I did some calculations. After 30 years, it would be traveling a bit over 30x the speed of light if I remember correctly. I know that shouldn't be possible and Portal is definitely impossible (as of now) but if it were, I wonder what would hold back my mass from passing the speed of light. It was an interesting thought, anyway....

    What would force Google into paying these taxes? All I could see is it pushing Google out of that area. It's not like the physical location of their servers affects connectivity (though, the UK's filtering plans might hurt)

    But, if Google just moves out of the UK (if they are even there at the moment) what would make them pay the tax at all? I'd move out just to show them how shortsighted and stupid they were...

    You don't have respect for a hard day's work. Why should someone get paid for something they did 40 years ago? Does a furniture company see a dime when their goods are sold as antiques? no. Copyright and Patents should be used to give the creator a limited monopoly as a reward so they will create more. The current system just rewards those why create once ad then do nothing.

    Also, I never said copyright and patents were the same thing. I said they should both be 5 years.

    For all those that are saying 5 years isn't enough because it takes time to release something, then make the 5 year limit start when something is released as a product or in a product.

    Copyright and Patents should be MAX of 5 years. They are supposed to give the author a limited monopoly in order to facilitate future works/inventions. It is to the point of absurdity and, frankly, is disgusting.
