  1. Bloglines on Cool RSS Feeds? · · Score: 5, Informative

Bloglines.com is actually a neat way to get new RSS feeds.

It's basically a web RSS viewer. Add or Import (OPML) all your feeds in, and you can view them from anywhere. But the cool thing is that it will recommend other RSS feeds based on what you (and others) are subscribed too. It's very good, and I've found lots of useful feeds from it.

It's free, no ads, has import/export (no lock in), etc.

  2. Why? on On the Pointlessness of "Hours of Gameplay" · · Score: 2, Insightful

Why? Because games are $50. Honestly, for many people that's a lot of money. Obviously a game I hate for 150 hours sucks, but why do you think a long game == a bad game?

I spent 100 hours on Knights of the Old Republic and loved every minute of it. I spent about 15 hours on Panzer Dragoon Orta and loved every minute of it. I spent $50 for both. Which one was the "better" value? Well, I can buy KOTOR2 with confidence, because the first one gave me so many hours of enjoyment.

I think most game developers aren't obsessing about game length, because they know the same thing you do, a game needs to be fun. But would a press release of "This game is fun" get any attention?

  3. must be said... on The Future of the kids.us Internet Domain · · Score: 2, Insightful

The internet will NEVER be safe for kids by themselves. This is simply due to the fact that parents have different views on what is "safe" and "acceptable". Hell, a science website about evolution is unacceptable to millions of parents.

So what I am saying is: this didn't/doesnt work with TV (though that is debatable I guess) and it wont work with the internet. You can't rely on ratings or screenings to do the job of a good parent.

The internet is an amazing thing for kids. It opens them to the whole world, and that can be both a scary and enlightening place. You can learn about anything you want on the internet, and it's even more accessable than a library. Kids should not be quickly banned from this tool. The internet is information, and kids must be exposed to it, BUT kids must have parents to put it in context.

I am very bias of course. I have always been given 100% access to the internet since I was 8. I never looked at pornography (I honestly never felt the need), and although I looked at different hate sites, etc, I only did it to get a view of the other side (I disagree with them, if you need reassuring). Im still rather young, but I can't imagine what my life would be like if my parents didn't let me have unaltered access to the internet. For one, I found a hobby I love, and I am never afraid to learn something new. If someone is discussing something I know nothing about, I simply do some reading on it.

Sorry to be offtopic, but I've had this on my mind for a while. Letting me have access to the internet as a little kid was probably a risky thing for my parents to do, but I grew up (IMO) ethical and more sensitive than most (I still cant stand the site of violence, even though I see it plenty (cant escape it)). I guess I assume if I turned out fine (better in fact!), than most kids will, and that's naive (also elitist, but hell, I'm a member of slashdot :P).

  5. The Picture of Dorian Gray on Books that Changed Your Life? · · Score: 3, Insightful
I know this isn't exactly computer based, but this is one of the many books that changed my life. Wilde discusses what it is like to be different, the meaning of sin, and how evil it is to be shallow. I think the last point is the most important. I consider geeks to be generally pretty deep people who care about rights, the world, etc. It's hard fighting this sometimes, and Dorian Gray gives a great representation of the "other side" (the shallow elite).

It also gives Wilde's brilliant opinions on what the meaning of Art is. Basically, in a time when so many people are asking "Why are we here", Wilde gives an answer. Obviously you may not agree with him later, but damned if you don't believe while reading it.

It's hard to explain Wilde's writing in a short comment. His writing is full, beautiful, and has endless amounts of wit. It is the perfect "life changer" for a geek.

Just a couple of quotes from Dorian Gray(taken from Wikipedia):
"Now, the value of an idea has nothing whatsoever to do with the sincerity of the man who expresses it. Indeed, the probabilities are that the more insincere the man is, the more purely intellectual will the idea be, as in that case it will not be coloured by either his wants, his desires, or his prejudices."

"To get back my youth I would do anything in the world, except take exercise, get up early, or be respectable."

This is a hard topic for me, as I'm an avid reader, I could come up with 20 books off the topic of my head to suggest.

Ummm, there is this little thing called Judicial Review. A court can rule that a law is unconstitutional. So yes, the Judiciary can effectively "make laws". Considering you have a constitutional right to privacy, it may have been within their power to declare this law void.

I dont know the details, so I can't say their decision was right/wrong, but if the law is absurd, they have every right to overturn it.

Also, I'll be the first(?) to point out the irony in this. These people are so concerned with Intellectual Property, but they are infringing on it themselves. Not that they're "at fault", but that the system is messed up.

Google has stayed away from Portal Fever so far, and hasn't gotten too cluttered, but they run that risk the bigger they get. There are plenty of companies that do very well in "niche" markets. Basically ALL users will always need a search engine (even more as the web grows), you don't NEED to offer everything.

Just stay as objective and useful as possible, and people will stay. Honestly I think they should be focusing on cleaning up search results. There is an increasing amount of spam and while it's not their fault, who wouldn't want cleaner, more accurate results?
