This is a company, taking responsibility and trying to help people out.
Who could say something bad about this? I know its not "original" (debian, gentoo, etc), but as far as I know, it's the fist COMMERCIAL distro to do this.
It was suppose to be released October 31, so you are right.
This sounds about right. 2-3 months behind schedule.
I love 2.6. Ive been using it since -test4 and Ive only had a couple of issues with some of the Morton Patches. Other than that, it IS everything people say it is (on my desktop machine). Fast, stable, and performs amazing under heavy load.
Its the first time I could compile GIMP and surf the web without feeling any slowdown when scrolling.
Lots of people have been doing it (I think the RH CEO comment didn't help), and its annoying me.
"Redhat ending free support and a desktop distribution." -- Redhat never had FREE support. You always had to pay. All redhat has done is changed the name of "redhat" to "fedora". This is fine, its just a name change.
Yes, development has changed to be more open, but its not like redhat killed the desktop.
And how does Novell buying SUSE make Free software dead? If anything, it proves that "free" software is taking off, since big companies like IBM and Novell support it.
After reading all the posts here, people don't see the major problem with IBM buying Novell.
IBM is a very big and powerful company, and them "consolidating" is NOT a good thing. Do we really want just TWO companies running everything?
I for one LIKE competition and IBM has a history of being assholes. These guys may be opening up to Linux(and I think they're sincere), but they are still an "old world" company that relies on patents (look at their SCO countersuit).
I've been running the 2.6 Test kernel (-mm patches usually) since -test5 and everything has been great.
Multitasking really is a dream. I'm able to compile, listen to music, and surf the web without any slowdown. Im no developer though, so I think that the 2.6 will really help Home/Desktop users.
Of course, home users will like improved multi media performance, but the coolest thing I saw was web page rendering. Web pages render twice as fast (for me) with the 2.6 kernel!! This is very noticable, and very enjoyable.
Did they recently read Steve Ballmers "Just Be Quiet " speech.
You think hackers aren't going to know about these vulnerabilities now? Once you publicize them, they're out there forever.
That website was a nice resource to point out "mistakes" that MS has made, and im sorry to see it go. I don't really want to go to "L33t H4ck3rs w3bs1te"
Im actually against music being distributed digitally, rather then through CDs (or DVDs). Call me a freak, but I find music to sound too crappy in MP3 (or ogg, or whatever). Yeah, its ok for POP songs, but if Im listening to classical, or The Beatles, I want to hear it was it was intended to be heard.
I dont see ever getting this quality online, even with broadband. I buy only CDs, and then rip some, and listen to the CD in my stereo. When I buy a CD, I have a hard copy of the best (sort of) quality, that I can then compress to my liking.
I like CDs, though there is a place for digital music of course (sampling).
But why would I go and buy legitamite ROM? I would really miss all the free pr0n ads you get from going down the warez root. Oh, and don't forget viruses, everyone loves viruses.
I actually learned how to speak spanish from illegal ROM sites.
Do you consider "illegal" ROMS, WAREZ? I mean, this isn't photoshop.
If i'm an uber-kewl l33t gam3r k1d, and i'm buying this just to show my equally pathetic friends that im the 0wn3r, how am I suppose to do this without a TEESHIRT!! I NEED TO SHOW OFF!
YOU GET VERY LITTLE SUPPORT WHEN YOU BUY STAROFFICE. You have to pay Sun MORE money for corporate support.
On top of that, how much support do you need for an OFFICE SUITE? I of course understand how you would need support for an Operating System/Server, but who could justify spending the money for StarOffice (thousands of dollars) just for support.
Now is a great time to show this to your boss and pitch that 'MS Office to StarOffice' conversion project."
Why not switch the company to OpenOffice.org? I doubt the company needs StarOffice.
You're just going from one pay-for product, to another (albiet less cost). If you REALLY want to show your boss the beauty of alternative software. Show him something thats great, FOR FREE! (that will get any bosses attention).
And if you choose StarOffice just because "Money means better" to the management, you're just as bad as MS.
People use "google" as a term for "search online" now, and I fear "MP3" will become the term for "digital music". As we all know, there are other formats, and I don't want to be looked down upon just because I choose OGG.
Hell, there are OGGs on Kazaa, so its not just a piracy thing.
Then again, wouldn't it be great if "MP3" was the term for "pirated music", and OGG was "legal" digitial music (ah, OSS dreams).
Punish people for a crime they didn't know they commited? This is horrible. To commit a crime, you should have to have INTENT.
The truth is, "ignorant" is a case sometimes.
Just look at the English man who lots his children because someone put a virus on his computer that downloaded porn and he was charged with looking at Child Porn. He was found innocent, but he STILL lost his kids.
According to the article, this kind of thing IS the VICTIMS fault.
I now want to switch my.NET development over to Linux/Mono exclusively, but I want to first settle on a free alternative to Visual Studio.NET 2003. Any suggestions?
Well, Mozilla comes stock in my linux distribution.
Remember, Linux/OSS is getting the "everything out of the box" idea RIGHT.
Redhat is 100% Open Source too.
They announced this when Redhat 9 was released. There was no reason why people should have counted on it for "long run" support.

Doesn't linus drive a BMW and live in a mansion?
I really wouldn't worry about Linus's financial trouble. After all, SCO isn't sueing him. (yet)
Lots of people have been doing it (I think the RH CEO comment didn't help), and its annoying me.

You know, THUNDERBID 0.3 has the vertical side pane too. Its just as good (i've used both)

She was showing off the brand new SVG icons in GNOME 2.4.
Mmmmm....scalable.
Hey, I love Slackware, but this is not a "fix" to dependancy checking.
/extra packages.
This uses Swaret to actually declare and manage the dependancies.
TGZ and PKGTOOL still have no idea what a dependancy is. This is a problem of course, because you rely on Swaret being right.
Not to mention, that it only works on the official Slack servers, which basically have what's on the ISO, and maybe 5-10
I think Slack should go with PACMAN/ABS from archlinux.org. GREAT package manager and "PORTS" system.
Well, im EXTREMEly disappointed.

Intel may never get their market.
the RIAA could be forced to file thousands of "John Doe" lawsuits instead
You KNOW this is someone's actual name. I feel so bad for him.
Then again, Mr.Doe has probobly gotten this all his life, maybe we should help him out? www.savejohndoe.com?
Apparantly, Im not so brilliant. :-D
Oh well, I guess I cant expect to be original on Slashdot.

I think the reason is that the majority of the population in asian countries are in large cities, with easy access to broadband.
As opposed to the US, which has lots of rural areas that can't access broadband.
And I here online gaming is BIG BIG BIG too.

I love the choice of the "clenched fist" icon for the pig masterbators. :-D
Now if only there was such thing as an artificial vagina icon, I could replace all my message board emoticons with this article. Good stuff.

C,D, I feel bad for the F Programmer.
