I switched away from IE a while ago because the browser windows would mysteriously disappear while using Microsoft's own Virtual Desktop Manager. Firebird works fine with it. It's ironic that Firebird integrates more well with one of MS's products than MS's own product does.

It's pretty simple: AOL handles their own mail internally, so if any incoming mail has "@aol.com" in the sender's address, they can assume it's forged.

They'd still be big, just because they're well-known. Just look at their search sites: even though MSN and Yahoo have crappy ad-packed search engines, a lot of people still use their sites to search instead of Google. Also, if you knew nothing about computers, which would you be more comfortable using: Hotmail or "cool-free-web-mail-by-bob.biz"?

  15. Client-side filtering on Microsoft, Yahoo Investigate Spam Solution · · Score: 1

I think the best way is to just have people handle spam filtering in their own ways, at the client level. Adaptive spam filtering is available in several e-mail clients, and it works very well while annoying very little people.

However, I know that some people still have dialup and they'd still have to download all the spam before filtering it.

"AOL is taking a different approach and is testing a system under development by the Internet Research Task Force. The system, called the Sender Permitted From, or S.P.F., creates a way for the owner of an Internet domain, like aol.com, to specify which computers are authorized to send e-mail with aol.com return addresses." Shouldn't AOL have thought of this a long time ago? I remember a few years ago when I used to use AOL and got deluged with FormMail spam with faked @aol.com return addresses. Good to see they're getting their act together.

Nope. I made the tool for sysadmins. I help run a large Windoze network where this kind of message can come in handy. I also built in some very important safeguards against spamming with it (it doesn't use RPC, just NetBT). If you're looking for someone to blame for messenger spam, Direct Advertiser is the who you're looking for.

  20. My opinion on EA, Eidos Have No Plans for Xbox Live · · Score: 1
I've been playing Xbox Live since the beta test and I think the way it's set up (with a single company controlling everything) has many benefits. Signup is relatively easy, you only need to set up one account. You can find and join a game in a few seconds. Every game also uses virtually the same interface. $10 a year seems like a good price to pay for all this; mose MMORPGs cost $10 a MONTH and that's only for one game!

It seems kinda unfair to me how Microsoft is hated in the game industry just because of what they did in the computer industry. You can't argue with the fact that the Xbox is the most powerful machine on the market.
