Metal Gear Solid's Rex & Ray in Lego Blocks

IllogicalStudent writes "Justin "Saber-Scorpion" Stebbins has created lego models based on themes from Metal Gear: Solid, Metal Gear: Solid 2, Star Wars, Halo, Lord of the Rings, Mechwarrior, and others. His work with the Metal Gear: Solid series, especially, have gained him recognition from Hideo Kojima himself."

    It is too bad that LEGO decided to stop making licensed series because MGS would have made an awesome set. I'm not a big fan of paying $200 for the KUBRICK MGS set... Grrrr...

    His skill with Lego is unfortunately not matched with his skill at website design. The coolness of the Legos definitely dwarfs the javascript, though.

    But the LotR ones are pretty weak. Minifigs with the character names under the pictures doesn't quite cut it in my book.

    Ok, this is damn cool, especially how he plays out some scenes from the game :)

    I can recommend the game to everyone too.
    Right now I'm playing it again at the Europe Extreme setting (no health, no extra ammo and an option to get game over when somebody spots you, bloody hard)

    My hat goes off to this guy, I wish I had more free time myself like he seems to have ^_^

      Are my character's stats. Granted, paladin... Female... And not even normal AD&D but Baldur's Gate 2. And no, I did NOT cheat to get those stats. I did spend too long on character generation though and ran her to Baldur's Gate 1. ( The one where you get better stats during the game instead of stats taken away from you... ) Twice. Stop looking funny at me!!!

      I could publish the stats of my BG2 Paladin - but I won't. I played D&D when I was his age back in 198x but even in the depths/heights of nerdiness I would never have considered publishing the stats of my signature character would be a "good idea"

      Mind you I was having the occasional relationship with real girls even then...

      Actually, it's a dual classed character with 4 levels of rogue and 16 levels of ranger, so it's a level 20 character. Get it right moron.

    As far as I can tell, all he's done is make a few customised little lego men. When I clicked the article, I was expecting life-size or at least moderately detailed models. Something like this... that is to say, something equally deserving of frontpage recognition. If I was the guy who'd made Han Solo, lifesize, I'd be disgusted to see this article at the top of the page, frankly.

      The *cough* life-like *cough* version of HanSolo in carbonite is just a big slap of Lego, with credit to the face-part of it.
      Further than that, it is as much non-slashdot worthy as this one.
      I guess nowadays that if you made a paper-mache hat of DarthVader or Gandalf, you will reach the frontpage.

      The point of his work is not to make something massive like the Han Solo lego project you used as an example. The point is to show quality over the quanity of legos. The lego projects you used as an example probably take up an easy 1000 pieces, whereas the ones in this report, each of his designs (not counting the repainted lego guys/gals) probably takes up less than 200 pieces each.

      Look at the pictures again. The designs he made can actually move (meaning they won't snap in half if you fail to properly distribute its weight between each of your ten fingers). MGS2 RAY's mouth actually opens like in the game, and its tail is flexible. Most of the parts (limbs mostly) are movable which is no easy task engineering-wise. Building a static object can take a few days to plan and months to put together, whereas building a non-static object can take months to simply plan and a few days to put together.

    While there are a few really nice models like the Harrier and some of the Star Wars models, the vast majority of them look like the ones I made when I was little, especially the battletech ones. Those were a complete joke. So this guy makes a bunch of custom mini-figs......and makes front page of Slashdot? Wow, maybe I should submit a webpage with all the conversions I've made to my Warhammer models if thats all it takes to make front page.

    Sorry if this comes off as flamebait, but there really isn't anything special about this.

    the figures are amazing but i'm so sad to ssee what has happened to lego in the lsat few years - i remember hwen i was a kid you had to build everything now everything comes built for you!!! you get a lego boat pack and you just fix together one side of the boat and the other and voila.. its no fair.. i love what this guy has done tho and his creativity he should make big size models of LOTR stuff! cool!

    In all honesty, just because a guy can throw together some crappy models and paint a minifig doesn't make him a genius. Brickshelf had some image of a MUCH better looking REX. This is really amateur work. Heck, look at the supposed Warthog. I've seen better MOCs from shaking up a box.

      I've heard there's a lot of stuff in the 'mechs that isn't simulated in the games...

      For example, I'm pretty sure all Clan 'mechs have fridges. Where else would the noble warriors of Kerensky keep their vodka?

      A few stories I read indicate 'mechs have speakers outside. There's nothing like marching in front of a rioting crowd with a Timberwolf, cranking up the volume and saying "Move along, nothing to see here" =)

    I thought the hallmark of a Master Builder was complexity. This guy has merely amusingly recreated some designs in Lego. Interesting if you're the guy's friend, maybe...

    I HATE: The Star Wars "Prequels", Anything Anime or Manga, modern art, sports, politics, popular music, and much, much more.

    When building the original levels for Metal Gear Solid the design team used Legos to see what the area's would look like, they didn't do the same for MGS2 because its maps were heavily 3D(Compared to the first game which had very flat levels) and the complexity was too much for them.

      Well, they DID use Legos for MGS2 for an exterior view of The Plant and the Tanker. See the documentary on disc 2 of MGS2 for Kojima playing with a Godzilla.

    Yes, I'm Saber-Scorpion. After getting posted on Slashdot, I knew that the resident jerks would decide to flame me. You see, they like to say I have too much time on their hands, but then they come here, read this stuff, and comment about it. They need to look at their own lives a little before flaming mine. So I'll just defend myself a little:

    I made all the Flash effects on my website myself, and I kind of like the sounds, thank you very much. If you want to mute your PCs, go ahead, that's your choice.

    My LEGO models were intended to be built as accurately as possible while replicating the LEGO company's official building style. The reason that they aren't HUGE or super-detailed is because I wanted them to look like actual LEGO sets. Get the idea?

    Some of the Halo vehicles, especially the Covenant ones, are a little off color because LEGO DOESN'T MAKE PURPLE OR OLIVE DRAB BRICKS.

    My LEGO models and my website design are quite impressive, even if you self-proclaimed nerds don't like them. And why is it that the only thing the average simpleton can ever think about at all is "getting laid"?

    Sorry about my lack of knowledge on the BattleTech and Halo worlds, people, but unlike some nerds with too much time on their hands I haven't read all the Halo and Battletech books.

    BTW, anyone who's played any D&D video game can easily get some classes and stats to post on a website. I just did it for fun. Should have known it would piss off some jerk somewhere just because he enjoys criticizing other people.

    Anyway, I doubt anyone will care what I say, but I don't know why everyone wants to be such jerks about a guy's innocent hobby.

    I'd be really , really pissed if I hadn't gotten a bunch of very nice and amiable e-mails from visitors that outweigh the effects of flaming, ignorat jerks. Thanks to all those who enjoyed looking at my site and who supported me.

    I'll slink back into my hole now.

    Thats shows how much time is lost when it comes to legos, heck, those people that did that monty python skit had wasted tons of times..... all in the name of legos.... reminds me of my "wasted" time..... *digs up the legos again* ^_^
