The simplest example, is comparing price/performance and advancement of the rail industry (government sanctioned monopolies) with the airline industry (competitive free market).
Yeah, except with massively different subsidy package. Amtrak gets no where near the money it needs to even maintain the small amount of track it does own, while the airlines not only get their airports built (and expanded!) for them, but then get bailed out with billions in subsidy after 9/11.
Did you ever think that the stream did not have the bandwidth to support you? No, it's easier to just jump to conclusions and blame Microsoft for what is clearly a bad codec.
Yup. That's exactly how the tele-zapper works. It sends the tones (they have an official name I can't recall right now) out every time you pick up the phone, but I believe it uses a shorter version so it is not so apparent to human callers.
So many on Slashdot are against GroupThink and believe that everyone but them is a "sheep", yet posts like this, which claim "Repeat after me" and "All together now", are always modded up, even when ridiculously wrong (NB: this one is only slightly wrong, see sibling posts).
Roman Polanski drugs and rapes a 13 year old girl and runs off to France to escape justice and is STILL ALLOWED TO WORK and even win the industry's top honor. Were he a "commoner" he would have been put in federal "pound you in the ass" prison like he should have. Is that fair?
You're an idiot. Yes, he won an Oscar. Know why he didn't come accept it? If he ever comes to the US again, he will be arrested. As long as the French are not willing to extradite him, there is nothing US authorities can do (short of starting a preemptive war, I guess). You can argue that if he were a commoner, the French would have extradited him, but you're railing against America, not France.
and even if not, the judges certainly have the power to throw you in jail for contempt just on their say so.
Not true. I read up on the federal contempt statutes for an Op-Ed I did recently. It turns out that it is very difficult for justices to hold people on contempt. Also, you cannot use a jail penalty for contempt without the additional standard of "criminal contempt" being applied. This is extremely, extremely rare, and the judge is not going to go through the effort (and controversy) for something so petty.
Well perhaps I should have added "for most people". When properly configured, Autoformat and Autocomplete do not disrupt your typing. I can type, but I can't spell, and autoformat assists with these types of errors. Also, autoformat is very useful for setting up a quick bulletted or numbered list. I also work at a place where we use our full corporate name in every document, and using autocomplete saves me 30 keystrokes every time I have to input that name.
"any word processor that does anything you did not specifically ask for is a complete piece of crap"
Default settings aside, Autoformat and Autocomplete are extremely useful. Anyone who says otherwise simply hasn't put in the 2 minutes of effort it takes to set it up to their desires.
Ethan Hawke's character was not perfectly healthy. We hear this in the scene where he is exercising and his heartbeat transmitter malfunctions and begins broadcasting his real heartbeat. After that scene, he runs to the locker room and collapses, gasping for air.
I am actually working on a DTP Project right now. Part of it is in Word, but it is pretty much being used only as a text editor, and for draft layout functions. I am doing the actual DTP in Pagemaker.
As far as PIMs go, I agree with you there, but you have to look at it from a manager's perspective. If you can buy one product and do all of your office work, why bother looking at 10 different products. You know that all the Microsoft products work together, they all come from a big name corporation, etc.
Few people actually do use Word's functionality. The argument can certainly be made that all these new Dells shipping with full versions of Word, Excel, etc., will hardly be used at all, and much simpler products can be used.
There are things SO won't do that Office will, but I would stick my neck out and say that in many cases those are things that shouldn't be done with an office package.
I'd say you're sticking your neck out too far. While I don't know what SO/OO can and cannot do, I do know that most functions of Word are there for a reason, and I have used 95% of Word's functionality at one time or another. Can you name one thing that Word can do that shouldn't be done with an office package? I know the obvious answer is the Macro/VB stuff that allows viruses. That is a security hole, however, and not extraneous functionality. The Macro/VB functionality is extremely powerful across all Office apps.
If you're just talking about pure data, that's great. However, some of us like formatting and presentation. You'd be surprised how much these things matter in the real world.
People don't learn Word through doing high school papers. You don't need to track changes, do a mail merge, or code a macro for high school. You will probably never deal with sections, columns, styles, fields, tables of reference, or indicies. You will probably never work on a document that is more than 50 pages.
I did all my high school and college work on Word. I learned none of the above from that work. I learned Word when I had to start *really* using it, in the workplace.
Spare me the "I used this feature in my paper etc etc". I'm speaking generally.
A lot of the BSOD/Login screen type comments seem to come from Europe. I live in New Jersey and have never seen an ATM which has displayed an error message other than "Out of Service", or similar. I have never seen Windows NT BSODs, Login Screens, Error Messages, or any other indicators of Windows or any other OS. I tend to use bank ATMs only, but I do not use only my Bank's ATMs (i.e. I do not use the little stand-up type ATMs that are frequently found in convenience stores, bars, etc.).
My question then is, which machines are currently using Windows? If anyone has any good ideas (i.e. not "The one on the corner", something like "All Fleet ATMs", etc), please let us know. Also, for those of you who live in areas with Windows ATMs, how often are these things actually offline with Windows style errors?
If principal photography is finished, then it is not too early for any leaked information. Unless there are significant issues, the story of the film is not going to change much. There is also little chance of this because Lucas has full creative control and doesn't have to answer to any studios.
This is total FUD and the points raised here apply to ANY OS. The poster also seems to imply that there will be no testing of these units, which is a complete joke.
If you're trying to prove your point with a link to Rush Limbaugh, you know you have a problem. Oh by the way, I'm right, and if you don't believe me, just ask Ann Coulter.

The 3 judge panel did not ignore law. They merely interpreted it differently. Law isn't as black and white as some people would like you to believe.
Battle of the generalizations! Except yours makes no sense. Sorry :(

Its true, Correlation != Causation. But Correlation != (! Causation) as well. We just don't know in this case.
Your true conclusion is yet another car analogy. Terrific.

Yeah. Sony can't afford to lose any money, those small-time losers.

For example, we believe in freedom of expression on the Internet...except for those who promulgate hate speech
Who is we? There are many of us that understand free speech means free speech for all, whether we like it or not.

Wait till the IMF clamps down on the U.S. for being a profligate deficit spender
Yeah and the UN is about to kick us out for not paying our dues any day now........
Posts like the parent ("get latest patch from me!") always get moderated up, so there must be somebody downloading and installing them.
Considering that a lot of mods don't even seem to READ the posts they mod, I doubt they checked out the link.
