2 simple words, fuck you. Microsoft has devastated the industry. I strongly believe that the current tech downturn was caused by Microsoft's evil ways. If there was true competition, do you think that M$'s stock would be still floating up where it is while virtually every other tech company is tanking? think long and hard about it.

God I miss the BBS days. I think I'm going to look for a BBS package I can put on one of my webservers. Those where the days I learned just about everything about computers, including how to build one from spare parts.
It's kind of a non-issue. I plan on creating a FreeBSD based firewall that will only allow static IP's access. Of course, you can try to guess which range I use. I suspect that I'll make a caching server on it also.
I've actually started doing something similar, but with 802.11b. I'll be putting out a flyer in my neighborhood rounding up people to participate. Since just about everyone there are old hippies, the communal thing will probably work.
My Mom has had three strokes, two heart attacks, and a quintuple bypass. As a result of all of that devastation, she has no real short term memory. There is absolutely zero chance I'll be able to convert her to Linux. God know's I want to, she lives 130mi away. It'd make life MUCH simpler, not having to try and explain why the "tv" (her word for monitor) looks blue all the time. Wanna know what she does with it? Plays euchre online, virtually all day. It's actually appeared to have helped her. I've warned her about Passport though and I believe she won't sign up.

Think Bluetooth. I'm hoping for something like a HD on my belt with a PDA/Phone/Camera/game device on my wrist. Bluetooth can connect these and more. Sounds awful proprietary though.
I have a heating solution, it's called a furnace. Basements are notoriously difficult to heat though. That's where most of my PC's and servers are, including my primary workstation. It's pretty nice in the summer though, nice and cool. Space is the primary consideration for choosing this as my work area.
Dammit! As soon as I finally buy a wireless solution for the house, this becomes available. I just (3 weeks ago) bought a Compaq Ipaq ConnectionPoint base and wireless PC card for my laptop. 802.11b. Oh well, it still kicks ass being able to sit upstairs where it's warm and surf, hack PHP, whatever. You'd be amazed at how much faster you can type when you're not shivering.
I wish 172's where $50 per hour. Where I'm getting my lessons, it's $65 per hour. A Cessna-152 is $52 per hour.
I do agree that home simulators are kinda not cool, mainly because there's no feedback loop for your reflexes. Plus the fact that it suck to have to futs with the highhat button (or whatever) to see sideways. I've always wanted to have 3 monitors so I can get a 3 angle view.
