Microsoft has joined groups like this in the past, and manipulated the standard for their own "good" at the sacrifice of the point of the original standard. There is every indication that they will do this again, since the OpenDocument standard is a direct threat to their proprietary standards.

Granted, I'd like to see how they would cast "gold farmers" in the movie. ;-) As for the MMORPG-meets-reality, no thank you. First off, the "winners" would more than likely need to be US citizens, and we all know that MMORPG players are not all US-based. Granted, you could have a different show in each country, and have those contenstants battle it out, but I just don't see that happening. That and the fact that I'm sick of these "reality" shows. It seems that people are getting upset at looking at the imports in the code without realizing that THEY ARE NEVER USED!!! Again, I refer you to the blog entry, but for those of you too lazy:

This gcj request asks for the addition of java.awt.Frame.createBufferStrategy which is all that is missing from gcj to build the java canvas stuff. (Though the canvas module contains a pile of spurious imports of sun.awt which are unnecessary and can be removed, not that there's much point right now, if a createBufferStrategy becomes available then removing the sun.awt from the canvas/java .javas is all that's outstanding)

Nothing to see here, just move along. More jumping the gun rather than investigating things to completion.

Wait, hold on. Last time I checked, criminals don't always just sit in one place their entire lives (s/place/country/g). The system is not just for Canadian law enforcement, but a more complex system for tracking criminals from ALL OVER THE WORLD (in time). The idea is that if someone is arrested for having kiddie porn, and the system shows that this guy has been charged for the same offence in the US and/or the EU, then I can pretty much promise you that they will be going away for a long, long time, potentially with no chance for parole, etc. I support this.

But of course us lazy Canadians can't possibly understand how to have our law enforcement teams work together properly. We should really look at how the FBI, CIA and NSA work together in the US under the new department of Homeland Security! Oh yeah! That's just a SUPER model to follow!

  13. Re:Still the wrong approach on The Baby Bootstrap? · · Score: 1
Someone with mod points to burn please mod up the parent. This is probably the best explanation I have heard in quite some time regarding the problem of intelligence.

The parent is correct. There is a fundamental problem with AI at the moment and it has nothing to do with the algorithms, formulas, etc., that we are using. The problem lies in the definition of intelligence.

The classic problems (the Turing test, the Chinese room, etc) are more philosophical models to judge if a machine can achieve intelligence. But even then, we still fail to prove that a human doing the same job is intelligent. In this way, neither test works to define intelligence. But then, that's the point.

We still have major philosophical issues with our own definition of intelligence that we cannot possibly hope to create an intelligent machine, because at this point we can only hope to mimic human behaviour. While imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, I don't think it counts as "intelligence". Show me a system that has the ability to make leaps of faith, or make irrational decisions, and then I'll say it's intelligent.

Of course, having said all of that I must admit that I am studying AI at the moment and intend to pursue a PhD on the subject. The possibilities are endless, but we must first come to grips with what we mean by intelligence.

Keep in mind that most admins are lazy, and that while we can yell and scream that a default setup is not secure nor is it a good indication of being secure, it still should be somewhat secure out of the box. If it's not, then we have a problem and we're supplying the ammunition to the FUD machine that is MS.
