Apple demonstrates that IT doesn't have to be complicated and that, in particular, a server can be something that normal people can use.
If your definition of 'normal' is IT geek then yes they have demonstrated this. Apple IPv6 was simple IT administration. Administrating and updating a moderately complex Mac OS X Server requires considerable geek knowledge.
Often a property and the land will sell for more when sold together. This is just one example where sum of the individual components is not necessarily the sum of the package and people love fancy packages.
Another example would be the people who sell the components. Each component will (if the business has some good accountants, management, and engineers, or 100,000,000 trained monkeys ) sell a product for a profit. This is how business work. I am not saying it makes sense but that is how they work generally. There are exceptions to the rule.
The packaging for my LED torch specifically states --- do not aim at animals! looking at the light will result in permeant eye damage --- I have first hand experienced looking at a light 5x stronger than my own in a shop. The LED was behind a "protective" polymer. However, my vision was certainly affected and I became dizzy, disoriented and nauseous after looking at light for somewhere between 3-8 seconds.
I think as a weapon such as this.... we have our eyelids. However, I would be concerned about the potential long term damage of this kind of weapon if it becomes widely used.

Web apps, may replace desktop apps, when I can use a web-browser to upload a folder by clicking a button. Anyone know how to use the open option in a browser to upload a folder (without zipping first)?
Granted, this is not a big ask....but I can not see any replacement happening until this issue is resolved.
Try: (1) Opening notepad. (2) Typing in Japanese characters. (3) Printing the document.
You get the crazy squares....so much for note pad being a good editor in windows. Perhaps Microsoft should get note pad problem sorted then move onto fancy new office features.
I have reported several bugs with Microsoft Office for Mac.....I do not use office myself, but many people I know do. I try it out with them and see for myself.
I understand that Microsoft probably has priorities set to making word work really well on windows (perhaps this topic proves otherwise), and they see these bugs on the Mac as secondary issues. However, I have never even recived a reply, and all the bugs reported are still there with every update that comes out. The least they could do is reply and say "We will look into this. Thank you for bringing this issue to our attention".
I think for a comerical software company a time frame for a fix would be even more useful.
Recently I have started telling people to use Pages, LaTeX, TextEdit, or any number of the many more reliable solutions which are availible.
Ohh.....that was my rant...thank I feel better now!
(A) It is possible to build a universal 10.4 image....
(B) Radmind is great for software deployment, particularly if you have different applications installed in different locations.
I agree with your other points. But I think what is great about OSX is that it runs atop a kind of *NIX : Darwin. For administration that is where the power of using a Mac is today.
I seem to remember reading a clause in v2 that stated if you write "GNU GPLv2" then this explicitly means the license is upgraded to future versions. Anyone care to verify this?
Have no fear OS X users. If you must deal with Office 2007 just make sure you run within a virtual environment and that your actual writing is within WriteRoom, This will insure that you have a place to write think about what you are writing rather than having to convince the dancing paper clip that you do not require any assistance with making what Clippy (the dancing paperclip) is convinced should be shopping list.

Certainly there are advantages to running an application or system components as a user with restricted privileges. However, there are also many disadvantages, namely complexity.
How far do you take this approach, 3 levels four levels....etc. Increasing the complexity, in this case by having different operational privileges for different sections of a system also will result in unexpected issues occurring more frequently. Even though the original goal is to reduce what can happen.
An example: Operating system
A single user operating system is less complex than a multi user operating system. Therefore, a single user application is less complex than a multi user application.
Complexity, provides functionality, in this case it may offer this functionality as increased security. However, it comes at a cost. As the system complexity increases so do the opportunity for errors to occur
To increase security, you could run a separate OS in a virtualized environment or better yet on a separate machine. Then and only then run the browser on this machine or in this virtual environment. The more things we try to do on one system the more attractive it will become as a target. See this article.
It will be interesting to see where this technology leads in the future. It could well become the de-facto.
There is an interesting piece of software called FirstClass. It has advantages and disadvantages, as does any system. However, one of the biggest problems I see with this software is that under OSX it hogs %100 of the CPU, even when not doing anything.
The developers need to sort this out. This is an example of people thinking that their software package is the most important package which will be running and therefore should have full access to resources.

I know very little about share points. From what I can gather by looking on Wikipedia, rather than the provided Microsoft link. SharePoints offers "wiki and weblog support, with third-party browser support".
If you are after version management, there are plenty of open-source tools available.
For the wiki and weblog solutions there are also plenty of other open source offerings. Check out opensourcecms for a live demo of alternatives. These systems do no have per-user license costs and many of the solutions are licensed under the GNU GPL and as such can be tailored to meet specific organizational requirements.
As previously mentioned, I know very little about sharepoints. So if I have missed the boat on what makes SharePoints indespesible let me know where I can gather detailed information from. I am guessing that you are running an older version which only works with Internet Explorer. Perhaps running Internet Explore within WINE or Parallels Desktop would be a way to provide access to any Mac OS Desktops you are running, or thinking of deploying
As another shameless plug. Lucid offers information management consultation. You would be welcome to contact Lucid to arrange a meeting so we can better understand your requirements.
If you have a good systems admin, then Linux/Solaris is certainly mature for the cooperate desktop.
As far as Mac OS X application offerings, have a look at OmniGroup's offerings. I believe that OmniOutliner is currently bundled with many Mac models.
Lucid Information Systems, one of the companies where I work (shameless plug) has business laptops on offer with most of the OmniGroup products and VoodooPad among many other useful tools pre-installed.
I have a 15" PowerBook, which I use at work, and a 20" Display at home. My Partner has a 12" iBook. All these systems run Mac OS 10.4. Moving from the 15" laptop to the 12" laptop makes a massive difference to how long it takes to complete a task.
However, speed benefits are not for quick tasks such as a google search or reading email.
The benefits of a large screen under OSX for me, are when I use 3-7 programs to complete a task. Such tasks often require seeing multiple windows simultaneously, dragging and dropping information between applications, not having to use exposé to find the relevant information, and perhaps most importantly being able to quickly hide all the other tasks, thus isolating just the information related to the task at hand.
If you have not used an Apple Display or OS X, it is worth checking both of these great products out. I have used dual displays. However, I would personally prefer a larger canvas when using OSX, although two of these big displays would be good. Should you be wondering I am still accepting donations for my 30" make me smile fund.
I have not found a noticeable difference between performing tasks on the 15 and 20" displays. However, the desktop display is nice an bright and sits at eye level, this makes working at the desktop workstation a lot more comfortable.

I am concerned that this is just the start encouragment for companies to do what ever they can to make money.
When GE Food is linked to health issues, how will the billions of people around the world sue Monsanto.
The first environmental pollution photojournalism in Minamata, Japan when a paper processing plant was dumping mecury into the water, and eveyone including babies became sick was captured by William Eugene Smith.
William Eugene Smith, was severely beaten by goons hired by the offending chemical company.
Who is documenting what is happining with our food sources. People certianlly need to be more aware of all the different chemicals they are exposed to on a daily bases. I am not sure if you have noticed but you are probably finding that parts of your budy are itchy.... It could be the SLS in your washing detergent.
What happens if someone sues a soap company for a life time of itchy skin because they used some bad chemical...
What happens if someone sues a chemical company for manfacturing or dumping harmful chemicals...
What happens if someone who has a brian tumor sues a govenment body for letting nutrasweet onto the market...
the list goes on...
Companies are becomming less and less liable. This has been slowly happingin over the last 100 years.

I use omni-web ( os-x only ) to sync bookmarks.....this works great. You can run your own book mark sync-server. However it costs a fair bit. Each omni-web licnece is approxiuamly $30.
Have been using for about 3 years, no problems. Using Apache WebDave Module for the server.

backup servers are great. you might also find lbackup an open source backup tool useful.

The default configuration of machines is ARD disabled.
When ARD is enabled, this exploit seems to fail.
Temporary solution : Enable ARD!
