    While commonly known as Pac Bell, when the breakup occurred, CA and NV were covered by Pacific Telesis.

    Pacific Bell was the CA component of Pacific Telesis, Nevada was the NV component. I think that Pacific Telesis later changed its name to PacBell before SBC bought them.

    Side node: SBC owns Prodigy, because PacBell bought Prodigy ages ago.

    When you're dealing with robots, the only thing you lose on a failure is time, money and materials

    Sometimes, you also lose a literal once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Consider Voyager 2. Had it completely failed, there would be no opportunity for a retry mission, since the Grand Tour configuration would be gone for several hundred years.

    I am not an Orbital Mechanic. What is the cycle period for the full gravity-assist Grand Tour that Voyager made?

    Yeah. I'm a registered Libertarian, and voted Libertarian in 2000 and 2004.

    You wouldn't believe how many times I was told I "wasted" my vote, that I should have voted for Gore or Kerry to stop Bush.

    1. It wasn't wasted. I voted for the candidate I believe most closely represented my beliefs.
    2. I live in California. Since electoral votes are winner-take-all by state, and there's not a snowball's chance in hell that CA would go GOP, this argument is specious.

    The problem is that too many people see it as only a 2-party game. Yes it's zero-sum, but it's multi-polar, not bipolar.

    \i{I have seen suggestions that ~46,000 mph or 13 miles/sec would get you into orbit.}

    Orbital velocity for LEO is about 18000 mph, or roughly 5 miles/sec.
    Earth Escape Velocity is about 25000mph, or roughly 7 miles/sec.

    46000mph is so far beyond what is needed for orbit, it's ridiculous.
