>"Which Filesystem Do You Use On Portable Media For Linux Systems? [...] you must agree that having Ubuntu asking you whether to execute or display every text file or image you open from a DOK is annoying"
Linux (does not equal) Ubuntu.
That said, I typically use a mixture of FAT32, Reiserfs, and EXT3 on removable media.
Let's take a guess at how much CROSS PLATFORM code MS will contribute to or through such a foundation... my guess is ZERO. The code will be for MS Windows machines and related products only. Or, it will just be the Mono-trap... make it cross platform/open enough to drag way behind the current MS Windows offering so it has the appearance of being open and useful, but isn't really; and if it does get too good, change the specs to break it again. Sorry, I just can't get excited about this knowing Microsoft's track record.
Open Source is nice... but Open Source *AND* Cross Platform *AND* based on Open Standards is much nicer.
On the Palm Pre Linux phone, it is even easier. Once you are in development (install an app to make that one click), you connect to it and you ARE root:)
That is simply not possible nor practical. A runaway process does not cause a "lockup", it just eats up endless CPU. If you have a busy loop in a program, wham, you have a runaway. The kernel doesn't know a defective busy loop from real number crunching.
>Who here runs Linux on anything with more than 16 cores?
Along the same lines... Who here runs their Linux *servers* with 16 or *less* cores? Probably 99.9%?
And "server" doesn't really mean anything. At work, we use Linux thin clients, so the Linux "server" is really dealing with 150 desktops, except not managing X/kb/mouse. So should it be treated like a "server" or a "desktop" for scheduling?
># Apps - it's got a gajillion, the Pre has like 40 in the App store, and like 50 homebrew.
50 homebrew apps?? Try *200* apps, and homebrew has really been only active for a month! Where have YOU been?? At this moment there are 50 in the app store. That means in only a few months after release, there are already 250 apps.
How many did the iPhone have after a few months? Oh that's right! They had NONE! There was no app store and no homebrew for a looooooong time.
I do agree with him that there is an order to lower and higher life forms. Of those animals that humans typically eat, mammals (meat) are the highest order, followed by birds (poultry), then fish (seafood) as the lowest.
I believe that higher order animals have more awareness than lower ones and as such suffer more due to pain, isolation, unnatural keep, etc.
It is no coincidence that semi-vegetarians tend to drop meat first, then poultry.
>Reducing coal consumption by 80% or so by having solar provide heat
The article says:
"At the most, the contribution from solar power at existing plants will probably be no more than 10 to 15 percent of the electricity produced." "For the Colorado project, the share will be more like 3 percent"
Although I agree with the spirit of what you said, it is not THAT much contribution by solar:)
Oh, I agree that many medications have undesirable mental as well as physical side effects. But there is a difference in taking a cold medication and getting drowsy or dizzy, and taking something that removes social inhibitions, interferes with language ability, makes you hallucinate, makes you violent, bends visual or audible perception, interferes with laying down memory, or something to those effects.
Nothing is absolute, and I didn't mean for my posting to sound that way. Everything is a chemical in one form or another... even food. Everything can affect a person in one way or another. Plus, different things affect people differently.
An interesting question to pose regarding my story would be: If I had known what would happen with the N2O, would have have chosen the pain instead? Probably not. But I would have pushed for some other alternative.
1) I never implied nor relayed that my choices were better than anyone else's. 2) I am a Libertarian and support people's right to do whatever they want to do with their own bodies. 3) It most certainly is an on-topic post about N2O when the thread wandered into medical uses. 4) There is nothing remarkable about not using mind altering drugs.
Why do my choices and story seem to threaten or upset you in some way? Most people seemed to find it interesting (and it was modded accordingly).
Look, I don't care WHAT you put into YOUR body. I am a basically a Libertarian and support the rights of people to do what they want to with their own bodies.
Just because I choose not to attempt to "enhance" or "change" my perceptions with drugs has no bearing on others, whatsoever. I am not making a social commentary.
I also don't care what you do or don't think about my life; as if you know anything about me. I was sharing an on-topic story about my one and only experience with a mind-altering drug, which happened to be N2O.
>I've definitely never heard of anyone being knocked out for something as simple as wisdom teeth extraction before you.
Well, it was certainly not simple. They (all 4) had not emerged and had to be broken and cut out... it was pretty extensive. Afterwards was miserable. I have heard of people being gassed, knocked out, or just local injections. Seems to depend on the dentist and the exact procedure needed, and the patient.
Interestingly, that was (and still is) the only time I had ever been chemically rendered unconscious:) I remember being asked to count backwards from 100- I think I made it to 95, a few seconds later (in my time line), it was over.
I have never used nor been on any type of "mind altering" drug in my life (yes, that includes alcohol, recreational drugs, etc) with the exception of once when a dentist used N2O on me to extract four teeth in preparation for braces..
What a *horrible* experience. I fell into a type of paranoid dilution and was absolutely sure they were trying to kill me. I remember it vividly, even though it was 25 years ago. It did do its main job, however... what little pain there was, was kind of "removed" and happening to someone else, in my mind.
Anyway, based on that experience, I fail to understand why ANYONE would call it "laughing gas". To me, "hell gas" or "paranoid gas" would be a better likening. Seems that my experience, while not common, is not all that unusual, either. One thing is for sure, I will never let them use that stuff on me again. I would much rather have the risks carried with being knocked out completely (and that is what was later done when I had my wisdom teeth extracted).
I am quite sure that the use in the medical and racing field are of no threat to the ozone layer. Those are intentionally created sources. The major threat is from general pollution that creates N2O. It is interesting to note, also, that according to Wikipedia, 70% of N2O is created naturally in soil and in/from the ocean.
>I must be dreaming, to have both Google's Android and Maemo available on what is historically the most closed computing platform in recent history (cell phones).
Um, you completely forgot about Palm's Linux (WebOS) on the Pre and soon to be other models too. Development potential is heating up there, also. The future for Linux/FOSS phones is quite bright.
Why not put Linux on your laptop then? You should be able to run Vista in VirtualBox, if you really need it. I am shocked at how quickly VirtualBox became mature, how high-quality it is, how many features it has, and how often it is updated.
If they are downloading music while at work, they probably really are "stealing". They *might* be "stealing" if they are downloading copyrighted works without paying for them... but they are *absolutely* stealing from the tax payers if we are being taxed to pay for them to be at "work" and while "on the clock" they are doing personal crap. And they are also probably breaking a dozen or so work policies in the process.
Yeah right... they are "on break" (using company/taxpayer computers and company/taxpayer bandwidth to obtain the stuff).
Don't get me wrong- I the whole idea that it is automatically "stealing" to "download music" is just stupid oversimplification. But I would think the bigger issue would be that while being paid to work, they should be working.
Yep, sounds a lot like the Palm Pre...
This might not be the year of the Linux Desktop... but it might be for the Linux Phone :)
Exactly.
Why would anyone get excited about this, I don't know. Sounds like a big mess just waiting to happen.

So it sounds like you are in the market for a Palm Pre Linux phone or an Android Linux phone or a Nokia 900 Linux phone...
The age of Linux dominated phones seems just around the corner.
Or buy a Palm Pre, which ALSO runs Linux and is much cheaper and hobby-friendly. Or an Android phone. Like he said, there are lots of options.
On the Palm Pre Linux phone, it is even easier. Once you are in development (install an app to make that one click), you connect to it and you ARE root :)
Might be too easy... hmm....
The iphone was released on Jan 2007. The app store opened on July 2008.
Do the math. That means iphone users had to wait ONE AND A HALF YEARS before getting any apps.
The Pre was released on June 2009 and the app catalog was available IMMEDIATELY, and two months later there were 250 apps between the two catalogs.
Now who is the "F***ing reject", you anonymous iphone fanboi
That is simply not possible nor practical. A runaway process does not cause a "lockup", it just eats up endless CPU. If you have a busy loop in a program, wham, you have a runaway. The kernel doesn't know a defective busy loop from real number crunching.
Almost all runaway processes are due to bugs in the end applications, not some situation created by the kernel.

Give me a break. Spelling has never been my strong point... so I clicked on the wrong word in the spell checker, big whoop.
Seems to me that your posting as an "Anonymous Coward" certainly boots YOUR credibility to new heights.

Actually no, I have never dunk coffee. Medications, yes. But those are hardly what most people would think of as "mind altering drugs".
No, not Amish, I just have no interest in distorting reality.
