Yes, but consoles are different aren't they? They are a lot more locked down requiring a more complex hack to break open for piracy. If people actually paid for the games they played, this wouldn't be issue. But that's not the world we live in and so companies have to balance anti-piracy techniques with losing customers that don't like when they do it.

But odds are, most of the people crying about the LAN issues on here are going to buy it anyways. There haven't been many good RTS games out lately. If you are a gamer...particularly one that like RTS's...you are like a moth to the flame. You know it is going to burn, but you are going to go anyways and enjoy the ride.

This has been stated numerous times...but most likely if you are playing on the same LAN, you will only need to use battle.net as a matchmaking service and all the packets for the game will stay on your LAN. I honestly don't really care about the LAN issue since I haven't been to a LAN party in years. But I can understand your disappointment. But it really isn't that big of deal as people are making it out to be.

No, I'm sorry, but it just isn't going to happen. WoW isn't some stagnant game that is becoming more dated. It is actively being developed and polished and re-polished and added to. To expect any MMO to come out as polished as WoW is now is to have unrealistic expectations. A bunch of people will start playing it, see that it is more of the same but with less people and less polish, and go right back. The idea that this MMO is somehow different and superior to every other one that has come out is probably just your own wishful thinking.

Every day brings everything to its death. But to think this MMO will kill WoW when every other one has failed is silly. Just watch. Every day brings us closer to your disappointment at seeing your game fail to dethrone WoW.

Umm, my bank account doesn't pretend to represent something tangible. It does represent something tangible. I can go in and get stacks of $100 bills any time I want.

When we are talking virtual property, one example is your MMORPG characters. I can't withdraw anything from Blizzard without violating the ToS since it belongs to them as is clearly stated. In this instance, this property has no bearing on the real world (at least in the sense that I have no rights to it). If it did, then I would be taxed on my loot from Ulduar. That would be stupid. And unless a game is set up to do real world money trade with its consumers, it should stay that way.

It annoys me that you state your arguments as "any insightful person can see". Virtual property is only blurry when you talk about it in a general sense. When you are talking about a specific instance, it shouldn't be blurry. It should be stated in the legal documents what rights you do and don't have.

New trend? This has always been going on. If there is something where the item is fairly limited, someone with a lot of gold can buy them all up and sell them for more.

But of all games, WoW makes it pretty useless. You can get everything you really need just from questing. Buying gear isn't really necessary since you level so fast you will be getting better gear from quests in no time. And end game is all about running instances to get better gear. Removing lan from a game that has lasted over 10 years solely because of lan should tell you everything you need to know about the game and Blizzards opinion of you.

You aren't on the minority on Slashdot, but you aren't being factual either. You really think Starcraft is popular only because it support LAN? It couldn't be the story, the gameplay, the fact that it is a damn good RTS that has been supported this long?

As others have pointed out, you will still be able to LAN, you only have to use battle.net as the matchmaking service. So this is only a problem if you don't have an internet connection (how are you posting to Slashdot?), have too many people at your LAN that all want to play others on the Internet rather than on the local network, or if you don't have a legitimate copy of the game. I guess I don't really care about the first point just like I don't care that my house isn't very wheel chair accessible. You are a vast minority these days (people without Internet) and there will probably be a crack that will help you out anyways (though you will need the Internet for that...but I am sure a friend of yours has one). The second point is another rare case, but I can see certain scenarios when it would suck. But again, very very small number of people will have an issue. The last, well, I really don't care about you.

Quite frankly you are over-reacting. Though I think you did the right thing cancelling your pre-order. Just wait and see what they do. If it is really all that bad, you made the right choice. I predict you will be buying the game when it comes out though.
