It is great that Nintendo has come up with a new controller and provides a cheap console for the masses. But to expect everyone to love it because you do isn't realistic. For me, it really doesn't have the games I am interested in. Most of my friends who have it don't touch it any more. Seems like a short sighted philosophy. Something simple minded that maybe an elementary school teacher would come up with to teach sharing. If we all didn't go to the store and buy whatever that we wanted just because someone else might need that item more, then we would pretty much buy nothing. Less things selling means less jobs means less people with money etc., etc. It would pretty much cause everyone to suffer. There needs to be a balance between not taking so much that others suffer and not taking too little, That balance can be struck not by everyone doing the same thing, but everyone being different. So the economy can handle some hoarders and some over-zealous yoga people.

And your game ideas are poor because it removes an important element of games: fun.

But according to you, when making financial decisions, you want the company to focus on the smallest percentage of people. Those who are picky and know how to use a torrent. You want these people to be catered to? Sorry, Slashdot does not represent the average person. The argument to not use DRM because some small number of people claim they won't pirate if it is DRM free doesn't make financial sense. Since you like to interject with something that is purely opinion, here is my opinion back: these mystical people you describe, the ones that don't buy because of DRM, are probably still going to come up with bull shit excuse to pirate the game. Meaning you might as well put a cheap, effective DRM (like a CD key or sell through Steam) to prevent casual piracy.

  11. I actually read the article on Understanding Addiction-Based Game Design · · Score: 1

and it didn't get very deep. He defines addiction in games as games that offer rewards (they tend to be smaller rewards) for doing the same thing over and over again. Of course, this is focusing on MMORPGs, but I don't see why it has to other than it is popular to bash these games right now...which is a bit odd to me...but let me explain more.

Some of us like to game. Whether it be RPGs, FPSs, RTSs, TBSs, MMORPGs or whatever. There has been a negative reaction towards people who game from the general public. Gamers don't like this. What is the difference if we game for a few hours a night instead of watching reruns of TV shows we have already seen. There really isn't a difference (other than gaming uses more brain power since there is actually some interaction instead of just sitting there). But since it is newer and different from the norm, people will make fun of, write laws against, etc etc just as they did in the past for D&D and rock music.

MMORPGs are really not any different than regular games other than the regular content releases and more social aspects. You do the same things over and over again...sure. But you do it with different people and you are getting better at it each time you do it. Really, not much different from traditional games like chess or go. You are doing the same things over and over, but you are getting better and you are enjoying yourself. Nothing really to freak out about. But even many gamers on here are going to bash WoW because it's new and they can't spend as much time on it. That and they probably know someone who has screwed up their lives by playing too much.

But most people don't have issues. Like most people can go out on weekends have a few drinks, and not get wasted. But we all know friends who go out and drink too much. But that is more socially acceptable. Why? Because we live in a society that values extroverts over introverts. So because you don't want to go out with friends and feel more comfortable at home, you are weird. "Why would Bob rather play WoW than come get drunk with us? Man, that guy is a loser." But him staying home playing WoW is his time to recharge and be happy just like for extroverts, their time to recharge is being social with friends.

In any case, the whole MMORPG addiction thing is overblown. It is just because it is new to society that it faces so much scrutiny. Human beings have been finding ways to screw up their lives since the beginning of time. This is no different. In 100 years, people playing MMORPGs will be griping about all the holocube addicts. Why can't they just be like everyone else and play MMORPGs? Freaking losers.

Non-MMOs like Disgaea are fun, addictive, and have plenty of grinding to keep you addicted so you can level up every item in the game to its highest level. I guess a game is a game to me. MMOs are just games with a community aspect to it that get updated often. There are good ones and bad ones. The social aspect and the adding of new goals can keep people hooked, but that doesn't mean it can't be a good game.

The type of person who plays the game has not changed. Maybe the types of people you associated with did. Or maybe you just didn't get far enough to actually be doing raids (which are on the light side, but the new ones get back on track).

The game can be played as a solo game only if you ignore a large portion of the game. And you have to try to do it. It has a much better PvE experience than any other MMO out there hands down. To discount it shows your bias or ignorance.

So you laugh at the guy for his statement...then make excuses a mile a minute for EQ. I have not done high end raiding in EQ. Probably most people haven't done the current versions of EQ and WoW to really compare.

As the guy said, for some raid bosses, if one person make a mistake, it will screw it up for everyone. Yeah, you don't lose all your gear or levels, but I never really liked that and that really doesn't say anything about how interesting or difficult the fight is. I think that is the key...the fights aren't just hard, they are actually interesting.

Take Malygos (large dragon) for example. When you fight him, you need to kill him within 10 minutes or he will go berserk and kill everyone. There are these sparks that fly towards him, and if they reach him, they increase his power which can wipe the raid. You need to kill the sparks in a place where you can stand on them because it will significantly increase the damage you do. He will then fly up and spin the whole raid up in a tornado. The healers need to make sure everyone is near full health or you will die when you hit the ground. Once you get him down to enough health, you go in to phase two. Large spherical shields appear on the ground and your whole raid needs to stand in them otherwise you will get insta-killed. The bubbles shrink and shrink forcing you to move out of them and get in to the next one. There are all these wizards flying around on discs shooting stuff at you. You have to kill them, making them drop their discs so melee classes can hop on them, fly up, and kill the others that are flying around. After you kill all the wizards, Malygos blows up the platform you are standing on sending you to your death...except a red dragon flight flies in and saves you. Then you control the dragon to fight malygos. You have multiple abilities that you have to utilize to protect you from his attacks as well as attacks to finally bring him down the rest of the way.

So what are fights like in EQ? I am just curious how far it has come from the game I played many many years ago.
