How in the hell did this get modded +5? Seriously, what is wrong with you people? People are going to have abortions (even if it were illegal). Why don't we actually use those stem cells to do something good? That's fine that there are other methods, use them too. But stem cells is not something that I have ever heard anyone use as a justification for abortion.

Justification for abortion go along these lines: people do not believe it is a human life yet, they can not afford to have the child so having abortion makes it less of a burden on the state, if you make abortions illegal, people will still get them but not in the safety of a doctor's office causing deaths and injury.

It's fine if you believe abortion is taking away a life and that it should be illegal. That is a completely rational stance and there are good options like adoption. But no one ever gets pregnant so that they can have an abortion to give stem cells. No one is arguing that we should have abortions to get stem cells. But since it is legal, why would you not utilize something that could help other people? I haven't heard even the most left pro-choice person ever give that argument as a reason to conduct abortions.

Your dreams of all companies suddenly saying..oh, that AC was right, all DRM is bad, let's get rid of it is about as likely as you getting a date with a super model.

My post isn't bullshit. It is reality. If you want to stick your fingers in your ears and scream "lalala" go for it. And you can play most MMOs like a single player game. It's up to you to actually communicate. If going off by yourself isn't fun for you..well, then maybe you shouldn't do that.

Large battles are won by whoever can survive the lag first. The only reason it kind of works is that they have a very small user base and it is a very simple game. And by simple I mean the graphics are very simple since it is a space game and battles are simple since you basically just hit F1 through F6. The complexity of the game lies in understanding how to play well, not in the actual computation.

  10. Re:They asked for it on Remote Kill Flags Surface In Kindle · · Score: 1

I'm sorry, but that is just really poor logic on your part.

First, do more people actually feel that copyright is unjust than those who don't? You can't get a good idea on Slashdot since we represent a highly skewed group. Most people don't care about copyright and buy things legitimately. So now they are a minority, does that make them wrong?

Second, just because a majority thinks something is unjust, doesn't make them correct. A majority of people still wanted to have slaves. Slavery, I hope we can agree, is wrong no matter how many people in a Republic or otherwise tries to tell you it is right.

Fact of the matter is, piracy is wrong. You can come up with as much whines and cries about the laws as you want to make yourself feel better about pirating, but that's all your are doing, making up justifications to do something that is wrong and illegal. Why is it wrong? Because you are denying someone compensation for their work. You may not like how it is all distributed, but you don't have a right to screw these people over.

Copyright laws may be flawed, but they are not completely unjust. The people who use things without paying their fair share are the unjust ones...not rebels against an unfair law.

And I find it a bit ironic you trust pirates of all people to deliver you a product free of root kits and trojans.

I don't totally disagree with you, though. We do give the middle man too much and the artist too little. But pirating gives the artist less.

The problem is that DRM is a broad term. If all DRM was like Spore, then I would agree with you. But it isn't, there are CD-keys, server authentication, and services like Steam. It does work to a certain extent. The argument isn't if DRM should exist...it is here to stay (and Stardock uses DRM as well). The debate should be what DRM is acceptable to the customers. Saying that all DRM should not exist just means you won't get to sit at the grown up table anymore. It exists, it always will exist in some form, and it does prevent many people from pirating. There is no way to prevent something from being pirated...true, but there are a lot of people out there who don't even know how to torrent that are going to just buy the game rather than try to figure out where and how to run a cracked game.

  16. Re:Lost Sale Fallacy on Why Bother With DRM? · · Score: 1

Your argument suffers from the opposite assumption; that piracy does not represent a significant loss of money to the developers. Say only 20% of piracy would have led to sales. If 10,000 people pirate it, that still represents a significant amount of profit.

There are many legal ways to avoid your "Turd in a Can". Don't buy a game the day it comes out. Get your friends' opinions of the game. Find a reviewer that has similar taste in games. Go to a site where users rate games and write reviews.

The problem is that people are lazy and greedy. If people used piracy as a way to demo games and then buy, it wouldn't be an issue. Most people will just pirate, make up some kind of justification in their head on why it isn't worth it, play it for hours, and then download the next one. I realize there are a lot of shades of gray out there, but I highly doubt the majority of pirates are ever going to pay for a game.

Software on the other hand takes a lot of money to make, but I can make unlimited copies of it. The problem is, so can other people. If there were no restrictions, then most software wouldn't exist because there is no way to make a profit on it.

As soon as you can look at a car and then make a replica of that car with minimal effort and no cost, you will start seeing restrictions on that as well.

Look at it from the developer standpoint. A person buys their game for retail price for $50. He sells it used and the developer gets $0. The guy who sold the game then goes and spends that money on another game. Is that game the same developer? Most likely not...and we are already assuming the guy isn't spending that money on something else. So the developer still loses that $50. You may argue that the person wouldn't buy it for $50. True, but there are many who would buy it for full price if they can't get it used. In any case, the developer still does not see any money for that specific product...so you are wrong, it does not support the developer at all.

You live in some sort of weird world where all manufactured games are owned by the same company. That's not true and let's pray it will never be that way.
