I think this would be a better format for Fox News. I mean really, 140 characters is more than enough for them. "Liberals!" "Socialism!" "Baby killers!" "Obama's recession!" "Tax and Spend!" "Destruction of marriage!" "Easy on terrorists!"

Heck, I think that pretty much sums up all of Fox News right now. I guess they can just shut down and open up the air ways for some real journalism. How about a 24/7 Daily Show channel?

I think Twitter is the first popular thing that I just don't get. It may be a sign of me getting older. But it just seems like something designed for women (or people who like to snoop in to other people's business). That seems a bit sexist, but it is just what I observed.

I have a facebook page so that I can connect with friends I haven't seen for a long time. But the females I know, they all like to go on to other people's sites to look at their pictures and see who they are dating and read their blogs, etc. I really could care less about all of that. And that is all Twitter is...a way for people to feel important and snoop on each other. The vast majority of it is boring/useless noise. I think people have every right to do whatever they think is fun...but this is one of those things that makes me look a little funny at them. Really...you are so special that people need to know what you are doing all the time?

And I don't think it is anything like IM. IM is targeted to specifically communicate with someone for a reason. Twitter is a bunch of people talking in to space for no real purpose other than for...well, I don't know what. Showing off? Trying to get attention? Bah, just strange. I guess I should follow this with...Get off my lawn!

The gamecube worldwide was third. Just deal with it. You can make yourself feel better by talking about how all their console sales made profit compared to the Xbox.

No one said Nintendo can't make a good game. Actually, they are almost the only ones that can make a decent game for the Wii with a few exceptions. The problem is, most third parties still have no idea what to do with the controller so the third party titles are even worse than they were on the PS2. And like the GP was saying, non-gamers, almost by definition, don't buy a lot of games. No one is saying the Wii sucks or isn't making tons of money, they are just stating simple facts that (for some weird reason) you have trouble accepting...because anything that can be said slightly bad about Nintendo must be incorrect? Nintendo has a long history. In it, they have released a lot of great games. They have also done evil things and made huge blunders. There should be no problem about having a mature conversation about it. But for some reason people like you treat it like a religion.

Despite being popular opinion on Slashdot and being modded up, you are wrong (and kind of a jerk). You considering it to not be a crime doesn't make it any less a crime. It either is, or it isn't. You can whine about it being unfair, but that doesn't change the fact that it is a crime (depending on where you live).

Fair use allows for copies to be made as backup for your legally purchased copy. It does not provide for you to copy or distribute things that you have not purchased.

I would not want to live in your world. Many talented people would get out of the arts because there would be no profit to be made. Very few people would write software anymore since they couldn't make a living. It would hurt Linux because the number of people going in to C.S. and C.E. would plummet and there would be no one to work on it. We would have music, video games, etc., but for the most part, the quality would be crap since there is no profit in it.

Listen, I understand that a lot of copyright law is really screwed up. With distribution and copying costs being near nothing, the price of music should have dropped significantly. People abuse copyright to make it something none of us want to be. But your arguments against it are thin at best. You just want to pirate software. It is just unabashed greed. You are showing similar ethics as a CEO that would run his company in the ground and then take his million dollar golden parachute. You want whatever you can get for free and ethics and laws be damned. That's fine for mod points in Slashdot, but if you get outside of the groupthink in this site, you are being immature.

I do think Twitter is stupid. You ignore the fact that many games that I own from the past will not play on my Windows XP machine now. Just owning the physical media doesn't mean it is going to work in the future.

I am totally aware that some game company might die off and the authentication servers will be down. I have faith that the company will release a patch that removes it and that if that fails, that I, or someone else, will be able to crack it. So I will still be able to play the game and I have no moral qualms about doing this since I bought the game. It is no different than playing those old games that don't work on my PC anymore in an emulator. I am not depriving the company of money for the work they did. I paid. And I have no doubt that I will have a way to play the game. It seems like people on Slashdot like to pretend the option doesn't exist. It may be morally gray to some, but who has ever gotten in trouble for doing this?

I guess I also honestly have no sympathy for people who don't have an internet connection (at least in the U.S.). If you are too poor to have one, then you probably can't afford modern games or a modern gaming PC either. Get a console like the Wii.

All the examples of how DRM is ruining the world are contrived and represent such at tiny percentage of people. If this is a big deal, just don't buy the games. It isn't going to matter, this is something that is going to happen. The best we can do is engage game companies in order to make DRM the least onerous to us. If you say that any DRM is too much DRM, that's fine, but you will be ignored.

  16. Re:Not traditional DRM? on Stardock, Microsoft Unveil Their Own New Anti-Piracy Methods · · Score: 1

That sounds pretty and is a popular sentiment on here, but it isn't true. DRM can not prevent piracy. But it can raise the bar enough that a casual computer user will go out and buy the game rather than pirate it.

Slashdot really has it wrong. Not that I don't understand why people hate DRM, but that this attitude of "la la la" and sticking your fingers in your ears and screaming that you will either pirate or not purchase anything with any form of DRM means that you aren't part of the conversation. It is obvious to me that the future for gaming is that it will have some form of DRM. What we should be doing is engaging in the conversation on how to keep DRM from interfering with our gaming experience, yet still protecting game companies rights to get paid for the work that they do.

I really think Steam is the future. The biggest issue is that if you are in the same house, you can't log on to one account from two different computers and play a game at the same time as your kid or wife plays another. I like the fact that it enhances the experience by letting know where and what games my friends are playing and can join in.

Some people are just never going to buy games with DRM. Some people are never going to buy games period. These people are irrelevant. Unfortunately, we are going to have DRM...I'd rather have a discussion on how to make it better for the user than to live in some unrealistic world where you think by not buying, DRM will go away. It won't. Too many people don't care about the issue or are perfectly fine with the Steam model for you to make a real dent in their revenue.

They typically only socialize with other home-schoolers. They are very social within their family unit, but are socially awkward from anyone outside...so I don't know if a parent really has the ability to judge how social their child is. I am in computer science and they strike me as even more awkward than many of the typical introverted people this field attracts. I am sure your kids are probably fine and that many turn out completely well adjusted. But I really am not sure, in general, if it is really that healthy for kids. It is like people who only listen to Rush Limbaugh and Michael Savage. They live in a skewed world view and thus can only relate to others with that skewed view.
