Ummm, no, you don't get it. Unfortunately in the real world there is probably not a single bill that doesn't go through that has something that you would object to. There are other parties, other opinions, other options to the ideals you have in your head. You would never vote "YEA" in your life and nothing would ever get done.
A lot of this comes down to compromise between very different philosophies. If you read Obama's statement...it was quite reasonable. It wasn't the ideal that he wanted but he voted on it since he felt that it was important. He pissed off a lot of Slashdotters...but I can't think of an easier group to piss off considering they don't actually read articles or bother researching why someone does the things they do.
Why do you think they make so much money? Can you not see the obvious flaw in your argument? Just because they don't make the games YOU want, doesn't mean they aren't making games that millions of other people enjoy. They are a company that actually wait to release things when they are done, rather than trying to cash in. That is what they do with their money...create quality.
None of Blizzard's games are innovative. They take old ideas and they polish the crap out of it. So who cares if they aren't making Spore? They are making good games that people want to play and probably do the best job of balancing of any game company ever.
Don't you think everyone would love to be innovative? But guess what, gaming has matured enough for it to be really hard to innovate. There is actually innovation going on all the time...but most innovation sucks. They aren't fun and so they quickly slip in to obscurity. I am perfectly happy with what Blizzard is doing. Just because they have a lot of money doesn't mean they owe it to you to innovate or take risks. They are a business. Businesses are to make money. If they have a successful model, who are you to tell them that they are wrong to do that? People like you drive me nuts. Don't tell people what they should be doing. You aren't as smart as you think you are.
Yet you aren't a game designer creating games with all your insight in to the industry. Very few game companies can do it better than Blizzard. There is no doubt in my mind that we are better off with Blizzard making games than whatever you could come up with.
Some people just don't like certain types of games...but you could at least be objective about it. From what you wrote I don't think you actually played WoW...or at least not enough to know what you are talking about.
WoW starts out simplistic but gets more difficult as you hit as you go along. Certainly, don't need a degree to play the game, but it is different than diablo to a certain degree.
You are never going to get a game that allows players to destroy the world in an MMO. The closest you will get is a game like Eve and that is probably one of the most boring games I have ever given money too. If the players can destroy everything, they will...then what you left with? Something that is only fun for the 1% of people who get to screw up everything before everyone else gets to see it. That is stupid game design.
Yes, lots of games have a hp system. What is your point? What a pointless thing to complain about.
Everything in life is repetitious. What game do you play that isn't repetitious in some aspect?
No, they do more than give things more hp. End game is actually fairly interesting since you have to figure out the bosses behavior and figure out a strategy to overcome it. They have more hp...but you can't just auto-fire it to death...you will lose every time if you do.
The WoW expansion was pretty amazing. It was so much more than a graphical update. The quests were more interesting, the ability to get good gear in other ways than raiding, the new abilities, the new areas. They really did an amazing job. Diablo added a whole extra area and new playable classes.
Quite frankly, you can find all the stuff you lament in most games. But this is Slashdot, where it is cool to put down things that everyone likes (unless it is Apple or Nintendo, of course).
Then go play Warcraft III or World of Warcraft or Starcraft II or... Hm, anyone else notice a pattern here?
Yeah, they are all Blizzard games just like Diablo is.
The Diablo series has always been about the stark contrast between good and evil, light and dark. The "gritty, dark" look was there for a reason: True evil and it's effects are not clean, nor are they pretty. You can have light and color in the natural and "good" sides of things, and with effects like magic and buffs, but the environments and equipment (unless possible enchanted) should reflect their likely rough and possibly sordid past. Diablo II felt very real; it was anything but stylized.
Actually, Diablo has always been about a lot of clicking and upgrading loot. The other stuff you talk about is story or made up in your head. Please go back and play Diablo and Diablo II. You are on a lot of crack if you think either of those games look realistic. The game looked gritty because it was played in 800x600 or worse. Guess what, in the 21st century we can have higher resolutions and we don't have to make the game look like crap. Seriously, I think your imagination has filled in the blanks of that game..go back and look...it isn't what you are remembering. You aren't worried about game play or story but whether it will look different than your screwed up memory of old games? Then don't get it! I'll be enjoying a great game with good story and game play. Sheesh, people whine about everything on here.
I am sure the Master Chief sports games could be fun as well. The point is, as long as the game is good, who cares what characters they use? He just proved that taking characters from one of your popular games and putting them in everything doesn't dilute anything as long as the games are reasonably good.
I never understood people like you. Some people don't like certain games. Why be judgmental? The second you start calling people "carebears" is the second people think you are going to think you are a complete moron and not listen to any points (valid or invalid) that you are going to make.
And if Warhammer is filled with jerks like you...I think it will fail. MMOs are all about community. When the community is a bunch of venom spewing idiots crying about carebears changing their game...well, it isn't going to be a community that many people want to touch.
Uh, I think I can dispute that "fact". Certainly some/many studies have a bias depending on who is funding it or who is running it. That is why you check it. Some people are purely academics who are actually trying to learn more about themselves and other humans around them. Your statement is overly cynical.
As far as the rest of your statement goes...thank god you aren't in charge of writing study questions cause those are pretty horrible. And parents have their own agendas as well that may or may not be in the best interest of the child. Actually, studies probably won't mess up your kids....but you probably have a high chance of screwing them up some how. I mean, look how many people raised kids who voted/will vote for Bush/McCain. Scary.
I play Eve....for some reason...just going to warn you that this game isn't going to be anything like UO. By all means, give it a shot...but look at zero punctuation's review...it is spot on. The UI is horrible, the game is boring after you get the basic idea down. The game is a huge time sink to get any real enjoyment out of it. PvP consists mostly of getting in a large group and ganking poor people who happen by your gate camp (if they come at all after hours of sitting around). It really isn't that fun for someone with limited free time.
Except you are full of crap. When you start making that much money you have CPAs that allow you to dodge most of the taxes and pay an effective tax rate lower than the middle class. The economy does better under Democrats than Republicans so your whole ruin the economy is a load of crap. I think you can look how the current administration did and how the economy is now as an example of how to ruin the country.
I'm sorry, trickle down economics is a load of crap and if you actually did a little research you would know this. If you actually think people who make millions of dollars get taxed back down to where they were...well, you are an idiot. It is always better to make more money. Try to drop your bias and do some objective reading. If you actually care about this country and the economy there is only one choice...and it sure as hell isn't the Republicans.
McCain was a centrist...about 8 years ago. He has flipped pretty much all of his views to become far right. But now he added Palin...who is about as extreme far right as you can go. Creationism? Abstinence but no condoms? Iraq war being God's will? Abortions abolished even in cases of rape? Yikes...wake up.
Did you even watch the conventions? The Democrats are trying to bring a message of unity. The Republicans talked about how horrible the Liberals are and how evil the media is. Every other statement was partisan and divisive.
I used to be apologetic about my political views and think everyone has a right to believe something different. But in this election...it is too important to sit back and listen to the bs and let it spread. You are off your rocker if you are voting for McCain and I will happily counter any point you bring up on why he is a better choice.
We have to tax something to pay for the war. We can't afford Republicans borrowing more money for SS and China. He said that he would lower capital gains for smaller businesses and tax the corporations that have been dodging taxes for a long time by using tax loopholes. Lowering taxes and spending more doesn't work. If you can't be realistic about this, I don't know what to tell you. The Republican's deregulation of the financial industry has caused the economy to collapse. You honestly want more of that?
Actually, she was second runner up...which made her third! And not all 200,000 ran, of course. But these are just minor details. I see hot people all the time. Sarah Palin is not one of them. Maybe when she was younger (but not really). But if you do think she is hot, then wait a few more months for her daughter to have the child and you can proudly say she is your GILF.
Thank you for actually stating the facts. Hopefully you will get modded up so more people can see through the bs the Republicans are feeding Americans.
Like I said, it is harder to see the flaws with Obama a lot because he has less of a history (which can be considered a flaw itself).
Actually, of all the Republican candidates, I think McCain was the best choice. Unfortunately, the guy I really liked 8 years ago had flipped to pretty much supporting everything that Bush stood for. Out of control spending due to constant wars (I am sorry...Iraq WAS a mistake and a lie...and don't you dare say I don't love my country...I can be critical of stupid government decisions without my patriotism being called in to question). McCain was more economically friendly...now he has big money coming from the oil companies so we should drill up everything. He had a more moderate view of abortions but now adds Palin, someone who takes abortion as far right as possible and wants Creationism to be in schools (holy crap she scares me). Really, I can go on for a long time how I used to like McCain and how he has changed almost every single one of his views to pander to the right wing. I can only hope the moderate McCain will come back if he is elected...but choosing Palin gives me little faith in that.
So the big flaw we have with Obama is we don't know much about him. I think that is negated because Palin is even more inexperienced and McCain has serious health issues. He has suffered serious cancer multiple times and he would be the oldest first term president ever. Palin really could be president of this country. I mean seriously....if you don't think the choice is becoming pretty easy, then I would love to hear your logic behind it.
That's not how it works. If the piracy rate is low then they have a reason to think piracy is less of an issue so they won't have to spend so much putting in DRM in the future.
See how easy it is to make up some bs statement without substantiating it?
*rolls eyes* DRM does prevent some people from pirating. There are plenty of people who would not be able to put the time or effort in to knowing what the heck a torrent is and being able to figure out that the cd crack is in a file rather than it "just working".
If we want to debate this, let us be intellectually honest about it otherwise it is pointless. For the vast majority of people, DRM has no negative effect. I have never had a problem with DRM and I have played games that supposedly have had some of the worst. On the other hand, there are people who get burned by that and they will forever be left with a bitter taste in their mouth.
So what do we do? Guess what, if you think DRM is just going to go away...it isn't. Crying about "when companies will learn" is going to get you mod points but it isn't going to make a difference. What we have to stand up for is DRM that prevents the casuals from pirating but doesn't have ridiculous restrictions. Steam is one that comes to mind quite easily. We need to reward game companies that have "good" DRM or no DRM by buying their products and boycott the game companies that use crappy DRM schemes. And by boycott I mean ignore the game. Not pirate it. If you actually believe in these things, and want to be taken seriously, then you should stand for what you believe in. That means sacrificing playing some good games. If you pirate it, then you are just continuing the cycle and giving more ammunition to the EA's of the world to add more restrictive DRM.
Realistically though, people are too stupid and selfish to follow that though. So this is just going to continue on like it has been with no real change. Which begs the question of why I bother responding to this sort of thing, doesn't it?
Really, this gets modded insightful? The pro-piracy people on this site get too many mod points.
Why does anyone have to elaborate on "not right" when it comes to piracy. It is freaking obvious. But fine, if you are really that dense. Just simply do the "other shoes" thing. If you spent years of your life working on something, how would you feel if someone just took your work without compensating you for it? You would be upset...and if you are trying to say you would be cool with it, you are being intellectually dishonest.
The best way to protest is to not buy their product and give your money to someone who does what you consider right. The people like you, the pirate, are a large part of the reason that DRM exists and that we all have to suffer. If people did the "right thing", then DRM would not be an issue.
You probably think I am anti-piracy...and I really am not. Do whatever you want. But don't try to fool yourself or others that you are morally in the right. That's just one of the stupidest things I have to read on this site on an almost daily basis.
That's and interesting point. So what would be wrong with Obama? I can't see any flaws which is pretty incredible. McCain is an easy target...but he has a lot more history. He cheated on and left his former swimsuit model wife after she had an accident. Despite being a POW, he votes against anything that would help veterans. He almost failed out of his military academy (he probably did fail, but his father was an uppity up in the military so that got him through). He has a bit of a history like Bush. He probably would run the country in to the ground as Bush did. Of course, now he has added Palin which adds scary religious zealot to the ticket. I guess it makes my choice even easier!
Yeah, this isn't hard to do when you lock down what hardware you run on. It is really comparing apples to oranges. Windows has a much more difficult task trying to work on all the different combinations of hardware out there.
I don't know why posts like this always get modded up. Allowing players to "affect the world" in any significant way will not work in an MMO because everything would just be rubble. It isn't realistic. This would be more interesting in a single player game or in a multiplayer game like CS where the server is going to reset after something is won or lost.
You want to be special in an MMO...you never will be unless you devote your life to it. That is the nature of the beast.
An auto-generated quests? Give me a break...that would be horrible. You would be actually destroying the immersion even more since quests would all have generic texts and would always be the kill and fetch quests. Yeah, WoW has plenty of those...they also have interesting ones too if you care to read and not rush through everything.

I just think you are the type of person who doesn't like MMOs. There are a million single player RPGs out there that you can enjoy. Having unique items for MMOs is a horrible idea since only the most hardcore will have access to them. That's is only fun for the tiniest fraction of people (even less than the people who can participate in high end game level raiding).
Everyone has all these ideas on how to make the "best MMO ever" but all these ideas are only thought out superficially and under any little bit of scrutiny they fall apart. Your game wouldn't have enough subscribers to maintain itself because most people would quit since they would never get to see a +2 item unless it was mowing their casual ass in to the ground.
No one makes people rush to 70. That's their own problem. You can spend as much time reading the quest text and exploring as you want. And there are actually many lengthy/interesting quest lines in WoW. I'd say FFXI did it a little better in there main storyline that would actually give you cut scenes with your character doing something important (though the game was ridiculous as far as leveling and doing anything solo).
It sounds like what you want will never exist. You want to change MMOs to make them more single player-like and that just isn't practical. All these people complain about WoW even though they played it for 2 years and have a bunch of max'd out characters. I think they are doing something right. Everyone gets tired of them eventually. Single player games can allow anyone to feel special. If everyone is special in an MMO, they are all just normal.
Ummm, no, you don't get it. Unfortunately in the real world there is probably not a single bill that doesn't go through that has something that you would object to.
