Maybe this is OFN but i remember seeing doom 3 at E3 a in 2002 and they were running it on an ATI card. They said that it was optimized for ATI because of some fancy feature they have that nvidia doesn't.
Things about the bf1942 interface that i don't like:
Searching for a server : PAIN IN THE ASS. The filter is cumbersome, there are no saved filters, there is no way to find your friends (except by getting the IP), and you have to re-type your criteria EVERY time. All that would be bearable if there wasn't a delay between when click join and when it actually joins (allowing someone else to get that 1 available spot). In the end i have to resort to using some third party program which is rediculous.
Maybe i'm just biased because I played Tribes 2 which had all of these things and more. But I honestly feel that developers should put these things into their games by default, not 15,234 patches later. I stopped playing CS LOOONG before the F1, F2 feature.
Running a server : This is where the console commands really break down. Having to remember 50 different commands in order to run your server is a pain. A GUI is nessesary. And the GUI for a dedicated windows server is a JOKE. Any real commands have to be run in the command line. All of this make it a bitch to tweak the server. Ever lan we have for bf1942 we have to shutdown the damn server and kick everyone just to change the rules.
Playing on a server: I've written my own scripts for many different games. I have no problem typing 'kick 54'. The problem is that the kick feature doesn't even WORK because 80% of the people playing the game don't know how to us it. I have NEVER seen a kick player actually work in bf1942 much to my dismay. It's to the point where if I see a rampant TKer I just leave the server. Which is really stupid. There are also many other vote commands that could be usefull, but only with a GUI. For example : change map, change/extend time limit, change number of rounds. I say they will only be usefull with a GUI because you need a majority for a vote to pass, and the only way that will happen is if 100% of the people can use the voting system intuitively.
But you shouldn't have to bring down the console menu and type in some stupid command. There should be a GUI interface for it. And though kicking was made a lot easier, but people still don't even know how to open the console to type the command. They should do it like tribes 2. To initiate a vote you hit esc and use the gui to select whom/what to vote on. Then once the vote is initiated an announcment is made (verbal and visual) and then people press insert (yes) or delete (no). These commands are also displayed on the screen. Let me tell you, TKer's don't last long an a Tribes 2 server.
I think the whole idea of "top 25 overrated games" was a dumb idea for a list. As Tycho pointed out their criteria for "overrated" varied between: 1) over hyped by the publisher 2) over rated by the critics 3) under developed and being rushed to the shelves 4) being a sequel that didn't live up to it's predecessor With such a wide array of criteria you are sure to piss off most gamers because every gamer has a sacred cow. Maybe that's what they were trying to do to make it a "conversational piece" but I think it alienates their main target audience more.
I've thought of a couple Lists that I think would be much more interesting: 1) Best games to be rushed to market (#1 Tribes 2) 2) Most poorly implemented good ideas (#1 Battlefield 1942)
Who can argue that Tribes 2 wasn't rushed to market 6 months to early *cough* UE *cough* . Or that the interface to BF1942 isn't HORRIBLE (ever tried to kick someone? forget it). I mean i loved t2 and played quite a bit of BF, but that doesn't mean they don't have their faults. Instead of saying a game is "overrated" and thereby invalidating everything about it why not point out its flaws in a way that you can't argue with.
We didn't drop the bomb to end WW2. We could have easily surounded japan and waited for them to row out to us and surrender (they didn't have any gasoline so they couldn't have driven a boat).
My understanding is that we dropped the bomb because we wanted to show the russians that we had the balls to do it. It's pretty fucked up logic, but who knows maybe it worked. Maybe the reason that the Cold War did not end in WW3 is because the russians knew that we would not hesitate to kill an entire city of innocent civilians.
first and formost i think Gore lost because he thought it was gonna be a landslide. He tried to ride coat tails without taking a hard line on any real issues.
As far as Dean is concerened I feel that he has a real chance of winning. He is the only candidate who has been an opponent of the Iraq war since it's inception. Yet as a governor he has had a great fiscal record (ie: only state witha a balanced budget). Bush sr. thought he would win because of Gulf War I but lost because of his abysmal domestic policy. Now W is slipping because Gulf War II is losing public support and he has an even more abysmal domestic policy.
Yes, but getting your campaign manager (florida's attorney general) and your brother (florida's governor) to invalidate 20,000 perfectly valid votes IS stealing the election. Not to mention setting up road blocks in poor democrat neighborhoods and requiring three pieces of identification to vote.
I believe they reused gemini and appollo capsules with minimal retrofitting. As it stands the cost to "re-use" a space shuttle is rediculous because of the area of the heat shield. When they first designed the space shuttle they said that they were going to launch one every month because of it's "reusability".
At least they will be getting away from the concept that spacecraft need wings. The whole idea of the shuttle is rediculous because of this. The wings decrease the payload capacity dramatically and increase the propetency for failure even more.
It's not at the store that it matters. You could sign an X if you wanted to. The signature becomes an issue if you try to contest the charge. That's when the Credit Card company will pull the signature and match it to other signatures.
Well, technically a politician is supposed to agregate the information of said experts and make a decision. The inherit flaw is in PAC's and campaign financing. A political system that runs of money/donations is a flawed one.
You have to capture the hearts and minds of the people that your enemies hold sway over.
I wouldn't say the Iranian government holds sway over it's people. My best friend is Iranian and he tells me that people are sick of the current regime and love america.
The problem is that people are afraid that if the shuttle stops flying space exploration will stop. Public support will wane and funcing will slow. I happen to disagree but there are many in the space program who do not.
In the case of Columbia, engineers who worried about damage that the spacecraft may have suffered during launch were ineffective in getting it properly inspected before reentry.
In the case of my last software project, engineers who worried about bugs that the software may have suffered during design were ineffective in getting it properly inspected before launch.
When engineers and managers clashed over the 1986 Challenger launch, the managers pulled rank.
.....
The Columbia Accident Investigation Board has recommended that NASA establish an independent Technical Engineering Authority. This would put responsibility for technical matters where it rightly belongs -- with the engineers who, because they know how the space shuttle was designed, also know best how it can fail.
"No boss, I have no idea where that article printed out 15 times and strewn across your office came from........ It looks like a good article though."
The sad thing is that Adding wings to a space vehicle add so much weight and resistance that payload capacity his slaughtered. Truly the answer is to return to capsule style vehicles (mercury, gemini & appollo). The problem is that the air force has a big influence in keeping the program a "flight" (ie: wings) oreiented.
My point was that it's forcing me to wade through the ads in order to enjoy the park that I take exception too, not the ads themselves. It infringes upon my rights. Simply offering them does no such thing.
I feel the same way about drugs. If someone wants to pump their body full of drugs I could care less. But as soon as they get behind the wheel of a car and pose a threat to me I start to form an opinion about their actions.
Your analogy doesn't really work. Freedom is the right to do what you want as long as it doesn't impeded on other people's freedoms. If someone want's to stand in a park and hand out ads for a penis enlargment device to anyone who is interested i don't care. It's when someone backs a dump truck up to the park and fills the park with the same ads that I take exception as it infringes on my right to use the park.

You know, if you take your sarcasm detector into the shop, they might be able to fix it.
