You confuse my high member number to be that I haven't been around long enough, but trust me, I've been here at Slashdot for a VERY long time. I forgot my original member login but it was Rathma...but since my email address changed YEARS ago, I didn't go through the pain trying to track it down just so I could have a lower member number than I do now.
Since then I've certainly kept track of my membership now as I've switched places. Plus my member name is my real name now.
But regardless, my original member number was no way near as low as yours anyway. I can't even remember what it was as I usually don't look at those things.
Also, my post that you responded to was ment in a joking manner, you should have seen that my question about how come Slashdot is never Slashdotted was ment in jest.
You'd think that someone that has been around as long as you have here would have seen than....hmmmm....
And, presumably, you are not a member of this crowd?
No no, I'm a proud, card carrying (lost the card though...) member of Slashdot. Just have to wait for the interest in the story to die down so one can actually read the site.
Which begs the question: how come Slashdot is never Slashdotted? Hm....
# Performance The games I play actually run faster on my system than they do on my wife's XP system. I guess I'm doing something wrong.
# Pricing 15 bucks...wow...that's like...3/4 of a $20...
# Progress In the 3 months I've "subscribed" to it they've had 2 major releases.
# Potential True, they play catch up with MS...but what else can they do, they have to see where MS is going so they know how to emulate the calls MS is calling for etc etc. They can't just make the shit up and hope MS follows THEM? Right?
# Priorities Oh, so a company can't have two areas where they're branching off? Apple released the iPod, did everyone start screaming saying they were going to abandon the Mac or now their interests lay elsewhere? Come on.
# Promises Sounds like a wash here. No opinion either way. They do release back to the community though, but perhaps not enough it seems.
# Packaging Agreed here. They should let the distos have it as a package at least. The development package.
# Propaganda Sounds like this point is propaganda itself. Notice that he offers no proof that they "fail to hold up under scrutiny". Ok, how so? Honestly, I'd like to know...break it down for me because frankly I'm too lazy. But then again, I don't belive 90% of the claims of any product...even the ones I like. lol (i'm joking people...don't get your panties in a bunch).
# Prevention He states: There is speculation that Cedega... Ok...SPECULATION? So, how is this a bad mark on their part? I could speculate also doesn't make it true. And as we can see, companies are still making ports for Linux. But he did pull it together at the end.
I don't know...he makes some points to make one think...and they would be worth thinking if it weren't for the fact that Cedega cost me all of $15 bucks and it works great with the games I throw at it.
And that's kind of a hard thing to complain about...if it works, it works. And for me it works. Doesn't work for you, not much I can do about it. I can't rally around something that works for me and doesn't work for others. I mean, how can I do that? I would just be repeating what others are saying and not going from personal experience: "Boo...down with Transgaming! BOOO...Yes, it works for me on the games I play...but I've heard that others have problems with it...so BOOO!"
I'd sound like and idiot! Ok...perhaps I already do.
I spent my 15 bucks...15 measly bucks...and installed it. It works great for me on the games I play with it...the same ones that I used to play when I had XP a year ago. Everquest runs faster for me than it did on XP...Warcraft 3 runs great, Steam/Half-Life/Counterstrike runs great also...there are some bumps with Steam as it updates itself...but they fix them.
I have no complaints with my whopping 15 bucks I spent on this. If I didn't like them, or they were not doing what I wanted it to do, then I wouldn't buy it anymore. Plain and simple.
And besides, most of the other games I play have a native Linux client on them anyway.
I'm reading through these, and they list the sources where the stories ran..and they did run...in various magazines, journals and newspapers.
So how is this considered censored?
censor
n : a person who is authorized to read publications or correspondence or to watch theatrical performances and suppress in whole or in part anything considered obscene or politically unacceptable.
v 1: forbid the public distribution of ( a movie or a newspaper)
[syn: ban]
2: subject to political, religious, or moral censorship; "This
magazine is censored by the government"
Now, if it were listed as "Important News Stories That Are Not Being Followed Through On"...then we got ourselves a list my friend.
But the title alone makes it seem like the US government is pulling these stories and saying they can't be run at all...which isn't the case.
From the Project Censored website their mission statement contains:
From these, Project Censored compiles an annual list of 25 news stories of social significance that have been overlooked, under-reported or self-censored by the country's major national news media.
Overlooked...you betcha. Under-reported...yes, I agree with that. Self-censored? I don't see that any of them were pulled here in the US...but perhaps they were in other countries? Reading through their list (the ones I could get to before it was Slashdotted) I couldn't find where the censorship fell other than just no mainstream media picking up on the stories.
Interesting read though...after the Slashdot crowd leaves I'll be back reading it.
Lol, how is this redundant? It's a fricken joke you idiot moderators.
Ok, how is this in ANY WAY a troll? Who am I trolling? It's an obvious joke taken from the Terminator...if you guys can't get that it was suppose to be funny and NOT a troll, don't mod it at all...just ignore it.
Listen. And understand. Those Self-assembling 3D Nanostructures are out there. They can't be bargained with. They can't be reasoned with. They don't feel pity, or remorse, or fear. And they absolutely will not stop, EVER, until we are dead!
I'll give you the biggest one right now: A way to install software that doesn't require a computer science degree.
I installed Gentoo Linux...I followed the the simple instructions on how to install it, and it installed. First time. Got all my hardware right. Sound, video, printer...everything on my computer.
I don't have a computer science degree. But I'm not an idiot either and can follow simple directions. I'm SICK of people saying "well, you have to have the GUI idiot-proof so anyone can use it. I'm sorry, if you can't figure out something that's simple...and yes Gentoo was simple...then perhaps you shouldn't even be ON a computer. Go watch TV or something.
To me, Linux blows away Windows and OSX in terms of usability and on the Desktop. Yes, I use all three in my job...and I have a choice on what hardware and OS I use at home and I put Linux on it because in my opinion it's the best.
Linux for the desktop is here, it's now, it's happening. It's not some far off future thing that maybe one day will be here. It's here now.
Bottom line: to each their own in terms of the OS they wish to use. No one is wrong in whatever they want to use. If you wish to use Windows, then it's right for you, Linux is right for me. Choice man, choice.
This is more opinion than fact based. Also, depending on who you listen to, I wouldn't go around quoting Chomsky if I were you. Ask Horowitz, Dershowitz and Werner Cohn to name 3. Not to mention the fact that several people have labeled him a "conspiricy theorist" in regards to things like the Kennedy assasination. While I think that he has some fine ideas, and I was into him in college...I wouldn't take what he says to be the end-all be-all that many do.
So Fox News and all it's affiliates, Rush Limbaugh, Bill O'Reilly, Sean Hannity, Drudge, The Washington Times, The National Review....these are all advancing a liberal agenda? Not to mention almost all of talk radio...certainly they are "the media" also.
But no, I stand my analogy of a hungry shark, but a money hungry shark to be sure. Ethical code went out long ago I'm afraid. When they take one source, and run with that. Or have "journalist" make up whole stories as in the New York Times fiasco. Or when they take opinion and twist it into a fact.
I'm totally suspect of all Media...I don't have time to break them down into "liberal" or "conservative". lol
"My second reaction was: have you heard of regimes that teach Physics, Chemistry, and Biology that don't correspond to reality?"
Yes, I do. Marietta, Georgia. The school board passed a resolution that allows them to teach "creation science" along side evolution in their science classes. They want the young people to decide for themselves which "science" they wish to follow....but they don't certainly don't go as far as saying "they have a right to choose". lol
There is no liberal or conservative media...it's a myth.
There is this thing called "The Media". It is like a shark. it feeds on anything and everything...including itself.
Where was the so-called "liberal" media when Clinton was going through all the sex scandal? On every channel, regardless of who it was...they were dragging out every dirty little detail about everything there was. Why? Why, ratings/money/cash.
"we got the bubble-headed bleach-blond who comes on at 5. She can tell ya 'bout the plane crash with a gleem in her eye".
Are some outlets of this trash slanted? Sure...a little. Fox is biased toward conservatives and CNN is biased toward liberals...but not to a HUGE degree on either side. Why? If any of them air huge falsehoods, the OTHER news organizations jump all over it....more blood in the water...gotta feed that shark...gotta keep moving. So both "sides" walk a fine line...but their still both part of the same swimming shark out there.
To get to the bottom of something, you need to look at many different news, see where the "bullshit" is, filter it out and try to determine what is really going on...then double check with Reuters and the AP. But this is a lot of work and most people just sit zombie like in front of the tube waiting to be filled to the brim with fear.
This is why Linux is a failure on the desktop. We had years of 'look how Linux is growing', 'it is technologically advanced', 'it has millions of developers'. This is true. Linux is in many respects amazing. But as a desktop operating system, it stills stinks, despite the vast quantity of effort put into trying to change that.
Sorry, this is offtopic of course, but you DID bring it up and I have to call bullshit on this.
I've been using Linux as a desktop now for a year and there is NO way I would go back. I don't dual boot either, Linux is the only OS that's ever been on this machine. I run KDE as my manager and I find it head and shoulders about XP in terms of usability and stability. I'm not a programmer, I'm not an "uber hacker" by any stretch of the imagination...but I'm also not an idiot and it's not rocket science here folks.
Linux is here for the desktop...it's here, it's happening now, and it has passed, in my opinion and others, XP. It's not something that's off in the distant future, it's here now.
But like so many others out there, you're just spouting off the same thing everyone else is saying without seeing and testing for yourself. I'm talking about actually using it for a while...not sitting down with it for a Sunday afternoon.
But hey, you don't like it...fine. But don't spread falsehoods about it. Instead of just saying "as a desktop operating system, it still stinks", tell us what stinks about it in SPECIFIC terms. Not vague "oh, the Linux desktop isn't "here" yet" whatever that means.
Ok, I know this was just an idiot troll bringing in a flame-war...but don't let these idiots get away with something like this.
goldmeer (65554) should have read the fricken reply I had 2 minutes after I made the post instead of jumping down someone's throat because he thought he caught them at something.
The original submitter of the news also should of said what the fricken thing was...instead of just providing a link. Just say what it is in the piece so people that are interested in what it is can go there, those that don't need/care don't have to follow the link...and contribute to the slashdotting effect...
You're in the minority...and I'm speaking of shops that use graphic programs.
I've been to many a shop where they are 3D-studio specific...then another that was Alias PowerAnimator specific (pre Maya), or one that was Lightwave centered. If you want a job in 3D you keep your options open.
But they all used the same paint program, Photoshop.
It has to do with the world being Photoshop. I mean, I work in graphics and I can pretty well adjust myself to a new (for me) 3D program like moving from Videoscape 3d to Sculpt-Animate 4d to Turbo-Silver to Strata to Lightwave to Maya to Blender...see what I mean? There was no one dominate 3D program that totally dwarfed everything else. In 3D if you start with one program, it's not that hard to adjust to another along the way.
But with 2D paint/photo it's pretty much Photoshop, and everything else that's "not-Photoshop". Yes I know there are some out there that swear by Paint-Shop pro or The Gimp...but Photoshop is THE program. So I've found it very hard to switch from PS to The Gimp...not to mention some things the Gimp just can't do "yet".
Hey, they swung and missed. At least they tried something a little different from everything else out there...I give them points for that at least.
But it was way way way over-hyped. But I am interested in new things from new thinkers instead of "let's do the 1st person shooter just a little different...but not much" approach from everyone else out there.
Anyone else have a hard time here reading Slashdot now that it's gone to this new layout/theme?
Is there any way I can go back to a Slashdot that values content over style?
