Please name a couple of restaurants that were opened AFTER giving away recipes. You're living in a dream world.
Ok, I'll rattle off a few: Elaines, Wolfgang Puck's Spago, Babbo Ristorante e Enoteca, Commander's Palace...want more? Let me know.
But please, you MUST know that a recipe is only one part of a meal at a restaurant...it's also the way it's prepared, WHO prepares it and what could be substituted at what it goes with etc etc.
Don't help your fellow man, it's a screw everyone before they screw you world.
The only thing you need to measure yourself with is money. If you do something and don't make money from it, you're a failure.
Don't try to help your fellow programmer and accept no help from them, and beware their code! After all, they may be after your job...so best you be private and screw them before they screw you (see above)
If you learned to do something in school, you MUST make money from it, or you're a failure (again, see above)
Second of all, I think that our free speech rights are (or should be) absolute. You should be able to say anything you want including child porn, fire in a crowded theater, slander, whatever. The Constitution doesn't place restrictions on free speech and a fair judiciary would overturn these so called "exceptions"
But you must understand why it's not allowed for people to shout fire in a crowded theater when there isn't a fire...and in truth, there is NO law on the books that says you can't do that. But what it actually is illegal to do is inciting a riot or the causing of harm of others in case there is a rush and people are killed etc. You're not charged with any "free speech" type crimes.
If you think THAT shouldn't be restricted, where does that end? So would it be free speech to walk into a bank and tell the teller to give you all the money or you'll blow her head off...without showing a gun or being hostile acting other than just talking? It's only speech. If she actually gives you the money, it's up to her, isn't it? I mean, you're only talking...right?
Should all assault charges be thrown out too? (assault is verbally threatening someone...not touching them as that would be battery). You're just talking with assault. You're not touching or hitting or even brandishing a weapon...it's just words. Isn't that free speech?
What if the talk and discussions call for people to go out and actually commit pedophilia and necrophilia? Is that illegal?
What if a popular guy on these sites says "this weekend, go out and find a kid, then tell us about it". Is that a crime, because he's only talking about it? I honestly don't know, as IANAL and know nothing on 1st amendment case law (for the US that is).
Freedom of anything is going the way of the 8-track tape.
The terrorists seem to have won.
I'm not trying to flame, but what if online freedom includes child porn? Or people being murdered while being taped and then the movies played out online? If we outlaw these isn't that a "freedom of experssion" also?
I know, it's an extreme. But where do we draw that line? The line may be in different places for different people. Who's right? Who's wrong? Who's the one saying who's right and wrong? Why do tornados always hit moble homes? Why does the phone always ring when you're in the shower? I digress..
Actually the Beatles are still very big, for everyone.
They were the number one musical act for the year just a few years ago (1999 I beleve).
Not bad for a group that broke up in 1970.
I'm still amazed that there is no one around today that compares with the breakthroughs that the Beatles did. In the span of just 8 years they went from "Love Me Do" to "Sgt. Peppers" and the White Album...AND were loved by both critics and fans alike. I don't know anyone that has done that since...meaning growing so much musically while still being popular and relevant.
But sure, there are people out there that may not like them. But then again, there are also those that just say they don't like something because everyone else likes it. They want to appear different.
Or how long will it take them to release a service pack to fix the anti-virus program that either deletes/quarentines legit applications or has so many security holes in it that it actually helps virus spread.
Read my post please. It was commenting on how old the story was and basically how it was trying to stir up trouble by implying that the FBI was going to keep the equipment for a long time or never return it.
I certainly wasn't trying to say the FBI was justified, I was commenting on getting the facts of the story straight before running off at the mouth with speculations. That's it.
Read my post please. It plainly was commenting on how old the story was and basically how it was trying to stir up trouble by implying that the FBI was going to keep the equipment for a long time or never return it.
I certainly wasn't trying to say the FBI was justified, or that they didn't take that long or anything. I was commenting on getting the facts of the story straight before running off at the mouth with speculations. That's it.
I stand by my statement that the story here on Slashdot made it seem like the equipment was seized and the FBI probably won't be returning it.
In case your memory isn't that great, I'll quote straight from Slashdot's front page story:
I'm sorry, but you've taken too long to answer. We'll be confiscating all the hardware you use, er, used to use, to run your business. But we'll get it back to you 'real soon now.' Thank you for playing.
I guess "real soon now" should have read "9 days"? But regardless, you saying that "nobody said anything about not getting it back" is wrong as "real soon now" implies either never or a very long time from now...which HAS been the case before, but not here. Not to mention the fact that this story was posted on Slashdot AFTER the equipment was already returned.
If everything was shut down, how come http://www.cithosting.com/ is still up and running? If all the equipment was taken, wouldn't the web page that's being shown on that site be gone...shouldn't it be hard to connect to anything on that site at all?
The fact is, this story is old because the FBI has already started returning the equipment back as of yesterday. The FBI confiscated everything on the 14th. CIT's web site says:
02/23/2004 CIT re-establishes service.
We have restored service at Equinix's Chicago Data Centers. We are in the same facilities as MSN and many fortune 500 companies. The facility has multi OC192 connections to the backbone.
The FBI has begun retuning equipment to CIT which is being shipped to our new facilities in Chicago. At this time CIT will continue to provide dedicated DDOS Protected web hosting only.
Yes, the FBI overstepped they're bounds and yes it's frightening to think of this happening...but let's not get the facts wrong. The story here on Slashdot made is seem like the equipment was seized and the FBI probably won't be returning it, which isn't the case.
When reporting the crap that the US Gov throws at us, don't embelish...just report what is known and not a lot of speculation.
actually, I use 'emerge -p kde' that gives me a list of all the packages thats going to be emerged. Then, I use that list to 'emerge -C' what I don't want.
For instance 'emerge -p kde' may give me:
Calculating dependencies...done! [ebuild N ] kde-base/kdepim-3.2.0-r2 [ebuild N ] media-libs/taglib-1.0 [ebuild N ] kde-base/kdemultimedia-3.2.0 [ebuild N ] kde-base/kdeaddons-3.2.0 [ebuild N ] dev-libs/fribidi-0.10.4 [ebuild N ] kde-base/kdegraphics-3.2.0 [ebuild N ] kde-base/kdeedu-3.2.0 [ebuild N ] kde-base/kdetoys-3.2.0 [ebuild N ] kde-base/kdeutils-3.2.0 [ebuild N ] kde-base/kdeartwork-3.2.0 [ebuild N ] kde-base/kdeadmin-3.2.0 [ebuild N ] kde-base/kdegames-3.2.0 [ebuild N ] kde-base/kdeaccessibility-3.2.0 [ebuild N ] kde-base/kde-3.2.0
Then I just go through the list and anything that's not "N" get's --unemerged.
Is this the most efficient way? Probably not, but it works for me...I also clear out all the kde files in the/usr/portage/distfiles also to clear up some room.
There's much more to this, but this will give you the general idea.
well, I'm still using my computer, as I'm typing this to you, it's compiling in the background. I'm not really losing anything. So how could I get back what I'm not really using in the first place?
This is very true, I suppose I used the wrong term there.
I was trying to be general. If X wants to simulate a world where they can find and weed out Y so that Z and X can live in peace without Y going around suicide bombing themselves along with X and Z. Also to see if they can help Z get back on their feet (even though it may be because of X that their off their feet).
But the question wither X should even be messing around in Y and Z's world wasn't thought out by me...which I think is the ultimate problem.
If you are X, Y or Z, I offer a complete and utter retraction. The imputation about X, Y and Z was totally without basis in fact, and was in no way a fair comment, and was motivated purely by malice, and I deeply regret any distress that my comments may have caused X, Y or Z, or their families, and I hereby undertake not to repeat any such slander at any time in the future.
I just read up on it from Ars, and it certainly looks interesting.
I'm currently using Fluxbox, but at the moment I'm emerging kde...should take a good long time to compile everything...but I'm going to give it a run-through and kick the tires a bit.
If I don't like it, there's always 'emerge -C kde'
Morpheus said that he didn't know what year it was, but some time early in the 21st century the war with the machines takes place...at least now we know how the Matrix is started.
Ok, that was an obvious observation. But they're making an online world that mirrors our own world. It reminds me some years back when I went to Siggraph in Chicago and Virtual Reality was the "next big thing". Someone showed a demo on a virtual world where you could walk in, pick up a book and flip through it. Someone remarked wouldn't it be cheaper just to buy a book...
So wouldn't it be cheaper to build a fake city with actors playing a part for the people being trained to interact in? Be employed by the US Army for acting in a simulated city so they can better understand how to weed out terrorist and help people in need, yet do so in a safe environment. Also, working with actors trained themselves in certain ways AND with the ability to actually "think" would be WAY better than AI in a game.
Just a thought, but probably a stupid thought on my part.
True, but they are out there...and Spago's is still a hopping place.
Please name a couple of restaurants that were opened AFTER giving away recipes. You're living in a dream world.

I need to clarify what my letter just said:
Don't help your fellow man, it's a screw everyone before they screw you world.
The only thing you need to measure yourself with is money. If you do something and don't make money from it, you're a failure.
Don't try to help your fellow programmer and accept no help from them, and beware their code! After all, they may be after your job...so best you be private and screw them before they screw you (see above)

With best wishes for your future (but not really)

I don't believe that any of those buttons work.
I also belive that at the gas station, Regular, Plus and Premium Unleaded all go to the same tank underground.
Coke and Pepsi are all made at the same factory, with a little more sugar going into Pepsi.
I also think my dog is trying to control my brain, the way he looks at me I can just tell he wishes to destroy me...
Marin doesn't have the proper microclimate to grow wine grapes. It gets too cold with the weather coming in off the ocean
California doesn't know from cold as here in the Midwest. I guess all the vineyards and wineries in Michigan are too cold also?
Quite the opposite, Michigan has had wineries for about as long as California has.
I'm Troy McClure...you may remember me from such MMORPG's as "The Passion of the Christ Online" and "Latoya Jackson's Fiasco-World"...

What happened to freedom of expression online
Freedom of anything is going the way of the 8-track tape.

I'm still waiting for high-def porn to hit. Of course, that would mean I'd have to buy a high-def TV.
Good luck trying to talk my wife into that though.

actually, I was just trying to be funny. It's not my fault it was modded as interesting or insightful.
And I agree with you, It's my opinion that security should be first and formost at the user end.
