Or perhaps a better way to look at it is if Microsoft was in the business of giving that many computers to educators with "No strings attatched" do you think there would be a anti-microsoft sentiment on /.?

  2. Typing saved my life.... on Why Johnny Can't Handwrite · · Score: 1

When I was in grade school it was feared that I had a sever learning disability that would make it near impossible for me to excel in school. I was examined and it was discovered that I had a near genius intelligence (not to brag) but had an extreme problem with hand writing. Hence I my ability to answer the teachers question and my failing grades. Anyway my parents bought me a C64 and ever since then my work has been the level it should be. Without computers/PDAs/etc. I would be unable to pursue the educational goals I now have (go Engineering go!)

It will be interesting to see what will happen in this particular market if XM radio ever becomes mainstrain. I envision TiVo like problems with th content suppliers. I also will bet that it would be quite possible that rather than pre-programming in stations, you could just to prefrences. If one could get XM meta-data one could simply push "Sports" and get a sports station. Then again I have no desire to go to XM... :-/

    1) Buy a Mac. I did and it worked excellent. I had no trouble at all. In addition I know many people who after a semester of computer frustrations have switched to Mac for third semester.

    2) Whatever you buy make sure it has a wireless card (or at the very very least a place to stick one). Every year more and more schools are going wireless. Don't be left out.

3)I use a PDA (Sharp Zaurus) but that's only cause I am a geek. Honestly, a pad of graph paper would work just as well.

TheRaven has made the most sensible post I've read yet. In addtion I would say that 70% of the reason that OS X works so well is because it is optimized for standard apple harware. when you start puttinng random repair parts together I doubt one will ocntinue to have the same user experience. In addtion I ask why people don't look at buying a used iMac or a new eMac? in the end the prices are going to be about the same and you get much much more out of them. Apple sells more than just the 3k power books you know.

Emacs is free, but it doesn't have all the various built in features that makes BBedit my Swiss Army Chain saw. Thanks fo the comment about my website, I have not tested it with every browser. (With the ones I have tested it on it is very readable).

  11. BBEdit is the king of text editors, here's why on Bare Bones Releases TextWrangler · · Score: 5, Informative

I've been programming since I could touch type, and I must say that BBEdit is an awesome text editor. First I used the Lite version. It held me over for a long time, mostly I was dissapointed at the lack of syntax highlighting. When Mac OS X came out I started to use emacs. I've used it so much the commands are hard wired into my head. I realized that no matter how good I got with my terminal emacs I needed a GUI to squeeze even more productivity out of my time developing. So I bought BBEdit. I have no regrets. All the emacs commands work in BBEdit, it has syntax highlighting, auto-indent, its own mini FTP and File Browser. The Shell worksheets are a huge help for when I am doing large scale rennovations of my system. I've even found some of the third party plugins helpful. I was most impressed with the HTML tools that it came with; I can churn out style sheets twice as fast as I used to using BBEdit. It's much better than the built in editor for PB.

If Bare Bones is putting forth the effort to make Text Wrangler a lower cost alternative to BBEdit then I must say it will be worth every last penny.

Its sad to think that people are so anti-cooperate that they don't know a good thing when it bites them on the nose. It's OK to make money. If we didn't make money we would all be starving on the corner of some streetor "working" behind a supermarket. Apple traditionally doesn't tell people to stop hacking their devices unless they have a good reason. As long as we don't see an article like "Linux used to pirate boatloads of music on the iPod" on /. and the linux hackers have followed all the details outlined in the EULA we won't hear Apple cry shennanigins. I contribute to opensource free software projects; don't let yourself get overzealous with this anti-corporate thing.
