At the university I'm going to, we use Sun Blade-100's with Solaris 8 for all programming courses (thank root for that!, especially since the novell network is b0rked all the time)
Yes, that's what I want, but that doesn't work, not with a novell network anyways. dragging the icon to the printer results in lots of pages with postscript command's
Luckily, we have sun boxen at school too:)
Ever tried sending a postscript file to a network postscript printer from windows ?
impossible!
the closest I got was installing a windows port of ghostscript, using that to interpret the postscript and print it to the windows printer driver (via GDI) which in turn converts it back to postscript and sends it to the printer.
now that's userfriendly.. NOT!.
and the debian cd's from compUSA have all the updates as of this second?
No, but the CD install is not the usual way of installing Debian, the usual and most used way of installing Debian is the internet install.
the CD install is the only way to install win XP. microsoft should at least update the version in the shops when a new patch comes out.
I get three or four emails per week telling me about all the patches for redhat.
I don't use redhat, I prefer Debian, I never get mailings about patches, I run an apt-get upgrade daily which ensures me I always have the latest and most up-to-date versions of every piece of software installed on my machine
but we need a better way to update things.
you mean something like "apt-get update && apt-get upgrade", done!.
Don't tell me that in the same amount of time there isn't hundreds of package updates for any given Linux distro.
sure it is.
but when I install Debian today it doesn't install a 2 month old version, but downloads the latest release straight from the debian servers.
in contrast, the windows XP version in the shops right now is 2 months out of date.
why isn't microsoft providing a network install, so I can install the latest version ?
Loading in the background has got nothing to do with mouse gestures. you could change the behaviour of the middle mouse button to open in the background too. which is way easier/faster than a mouse gesture.
A quick set of down-up's on a bunch of links on a news site, and they're all loading in new windows in the background.
a simple click on the thumb knob of my logitech MouseMan Optical also opens a link in a new window, with little mouse movement (point at link, middleclick) , okay, it doesn't open in the background, but that's beside the point.
Iirc the PSOne was designed to be portable, you can get an LCD screen for it which attaches to the back, and there probably is an external battery available.
It's obvious that finding and downloading MP3 adds extra steps to the piracy (or backup) process - making redistributing a CD on a real medium (such as CDR) that much more difficult.
Actually, for me it's easier to not buy the CD at all and just download it from the net.
I can download and burn a CD in less time and with less effort than it takes for me to take my bike to town and buy it in a shop. (and since I don't use real CD's very often, I have to rip that CD after buying it, adding more time)
and then I haven't even started about the costs...
So if record companies want me to buy a CD, they have to make it
easier, no biking to town in the rain
faster, not spending half an hour in a record store, looking for that one record (+ travel time)
cheaper
in other words: why should I pay for something that's harder to get, and takes more time to get. compared to the same product for free.
this is what joe user will think:
A dangerous "virus" threatens the entire internet (*cough*) and then microsoft comes to the rescue with a patch and saves the internet!
clicking on that link does NOT reboot your machine even if you are infected.
the reboot stuff only triggers when an infected machine tries to break into the machine running that script.

What about win2k's own remote administration application ? , not good enough for MS ?
"See that pile of stuffed animals over there? That's my teraflop supercomputer."
Great idea!
1. Build beowulf cluster out of teddy's
2. ????
3. Profit!
At the university I'm going to, we use Sun Blade-100's with Solaris 8 for all programming courses (thank root for that!, especially since the novell network is b0rked all the time)
maybe by hiring and training new employees ?

Seriously. How long is a "line of code"?
A line of code is the text between 2 newline's
I run it at 1600x1200, no problems whatsoever.
what exactly is your problem ?

Where I live, people pay per minute for using the telephone line. downloading mp3's over an 56k connection is expensive
MSFT can't really do much about it now unless they release some Windows update - which is unlikely to catch 56k'ers attention much.
...
I don't thinks many 56k'ers download digital music
unless you like your music to sound like it's synthesised by a computer.
:)
My music already IS that way, no encoder is ever going to make it sound natural
I just saw a nice quote today: "audiophiles are people who listen to the audio equipment, not the music"
Nope, that's not beside the point..

In mozilla it's an option
Actually, I've already seen a pre-air rip.

A simple:
su
chown root.root moviefile.whatever
chmod a-w moviefile.whatever
will fix that, unless they are going to r00t my PC. in which case I'll sue their pants off.
Actually, it might even be good PR for them too.

Look at XP's new interface ... windows is the toy OS here.
It wouldn't look bad in a teletubbies episode.
