  4. It's Comcastic on Comcast Drops Microsoft · · Score: 2

    Dear Comcast Marketing:

The other day, my son finished his homework and sat down for his favorite show: Heros. The show had started 20 minutes ago, so flicked on the TV, saw the start of a key scene (live), reach for the remote and hit the DVR button to start from the beginning, and BOOM - the box decided to reboot. He was in a complete panic, because he knew he just missed that key scene forever. My daughter noticed his frustration, and yelled out "It's Comcastic," which is what we always say when there's a reboot.

The next day my daughter saw a Comcast ad, and said, "Geez, dad, why are they so excited about the Comcastic thing?" I was confused, and asked her what she meant... she said "I mean, Comcastic means broken, right?"

    Sincerely,
    The future generation

  5. So, don't use verizon.com, etc.? on 5 Things the Boss Should Know About Spam Fighting · · Score: 2, Insightful

That list (http://www.spamhaus.org/statistics/networks.lasso ) has verizon.com, att.net, serverflo.com, xo.com in spots 1, 2, 3, 4. Should CIO's stop using Verizon, ATT and XO until they clean up their act?

  7. Why would you want to stay? on Computer Jobs -- How to Resign Professionally? · · Score: 1

Flip it around: why would you want to stay? I've been on both sides of this many times, and the best way to quit is to offer 2 weeks our of professional courtesy, and hope they kick you out right away and pay you. It is *zero* fun hanging around after you've told everybody you're leaving -- it's like putting a "lame duck" sticker on your back.

When I'm hiring I often tell new hires to give their current employers "up to 2 weeks" - which provides the courtesy, but gives the employer a way to make it shorter. I'm happy to have that new employee *now* and the former employer is typically also happy to make a quick transition - that is, after they get over the fact that the decision is final.

  8. When will Apple do this? on Napster To Campaign Aggressively Against iPod · · Score: 1

For those of us (all 5 of us) who are trying to find a way to enjoy portable music *and* keep it legal, this seems quite attractive. I've ripped my CD's (I posit that this is legal), and I buy a CD from time to time, but I spend more money on iTunes these days - more than $15 / month. If I could spend that same $15 / month and get access to zillions of songs it seems like a better deal to me. I don't really care if I "own" the songs, what I care about is that my music budget is giving me the best bang for the buck.

BUT, I've got a pretty big investment in iPods. I've purchased 6 so far - one was stolen, one hit a tile floor and broke, and 4 are in use - by me and the other members of my family. Do I have to start over w/ new hardware? When I'm looking to upgrade I may have to look at the competition - maybe it won't be so lame by then.

If I'm any indication of the market for music (market defined as "people who pay money for goods and services"), Apple needs to look at this ASAP, or risk losing their main customers. This is the first real threat that I've seen for the iPod.

  9. The NYT doesn't like InterCap names on The Tyranny of Copyright? · · Score: 2, Informative

The NYT has a bunch of rules about how names are presented - like, no InterCap names, no Punctuation! in names, an allergy to acronyms (HP is typically spelled out Hewlett Packard, and then the Packard bit is dropped; I note that IBM doesn't have this problem), etc.

So, call it Copyleft and you're fine.

  10. Re:Partly on Israeli Government Suspends Microsoft Contracts · · Score: 1

Yes, Office:Mac is Carbon. (Can't you tell? Cocoa apps are small, open fast, and have great fit and finish.)

I'm not sure how true this is today, but it used to be that office apps shared a lot of code between Mac and Windows. It makes sense - why write the app twice? I'm sure that there's lots of "edge code" these days, but I suspect that much of the core text composition is "core" - which includes the language and font support.

  11. Buy a small car; disable the xmitter on More on Oregon and GPS-tracked Gas Taxes · · Score: 1

There's a nifty loophole: buy a small gas-sipping car, and then disable the xmitter. That way you'll be viewed as an old car, and you can pay the gas tax, which will presumably be lower, and certainly cheaper than the per-mile charge.

In fact, unless it's required by law, I'm not sure what incentive the manuf. has for adding the xmitter to a gas-sipping car - certainly nobody would want to buy one. (For a big SUV, yes, consumers would demand the xmitter - it effectively lowers their tax bill.) And making it a law sounds dicey for OR - CA maybe, but OR isn't big enough.

    I don't get it.
