Depends on the direction of the vector... if it's pointing towards the center of the earth, then no, you seem to encounter a hard object called the ground and go SPLAT!!! If you're lucky, you'd break a few bones. If not, then of course you wouldn't survive...

Same applies to the opposite direction, you would eventually run out of breathable air, after 1 hour...

If you're attempting to go 30kph in the direction perpendicular to the other 2 vectors, then you're just flying and gravity is probably looking the other way. :)

cheap goods are made for cheap people

There is a saying that goes something like this:
I'm not rich enough to buy cheap things.

Even though cheap goods are made for cheap people, it's a false sense of cheap, because the cheap good will inevitably break, forcing you to buy another one and another one, when for the same amout of money as 2 or 3 cheap goods, you could have bought a more expensive high quality good that would last you a lot longer than 3x lifetime of cheap good.

I've seen it time and time again, especially with electronics, umbrellas, and of course, digital watches, which, for some reason, seem like a good idea.

This is nothing new! They just took an old idea and applied it outside the visual spectrum.

If you take a red pen and write something on white paper and then look at it under red light (try the black and white photo developer's light in a blackroom) or through red glass or sunglasses, the writing would disappear.

The same principle is used in some sweepstakes where you have a paper with a whole bunch of colored dots on it, and then you apply a filter to it to reveal a hidden word or a code. The filter makes the background noise invisible and reveals a code that is not the background noise. They're doing exactly the same thing, except that they color the camouflage as the background noise and use the light as the filter, since it's just a single frequency anyway.

    So much for originality.

Great idea, but I only see one problem w/ this mission. There is a reason why the shuttles have launch windows - to get into certain orbit. If the interval between those windows is too long, then the rocket solution is kind of useless, plus they'd need an arm or something to catch the payload. I'm not sure if the shuttle arm is sent up there with every mission.

Why not stick a couple of Soyuz escape pods into that payload for the shuttle crew to bail out and abandon the orbiter?

Also, launching the shuttle into orbit w/ ISS creates a possibility of an accidental collision between the two, if one becomes incapacitated.

My solution is don't drive behind trucks and be able to see at least 3 cars ahead

Actually, driving behind commercial trucks (also known as 18-wheelers) is a pretty good idea. They are about 3 car lengths, so that eliminates the 3 cars ahead. The truck drivers tend to see the road better, plus that's what they do for a living and they have CB's, so if there is anything up the road or an asshole in front of them, they'll always leave enough distance between themselves and whatever is in front to safely break. Since the truck has more mass, it will take longer for it to decelerate, allowing you more reaction time.

If your car is a box, it might get tossed around from the wind. If it's aerodynamic, you'll be fine. If you time it right, you can ride the truck's back and save on fuel, since most of the air-breaking will be done by the truck (sam principle used by long-distance runners and bikers).

Just don't get stuck between 2 trucks. That's a deathtrap for sure.

The only reason we have such a high survival rate of the current babies is because of medical and scientific advances. The only reason stem cell research exists is because of medical and scientific advances waiting to happen.

I can't see a single usage for a flash-based player. They are virtually indistinguishable on price and features

    I disagree with you.

I bought my gf a Soul III (cd-based mp3 player) when it first came out. I owned a Soul II and was pretty happy with it. Little did I foresee that she would completely destroy it only after 6 months of (ab)use. The metallic cover had a slight dent in it, the cd-rotating mechanism would make loud noise, and the audio became very staticky.

My next purchase was a RioCali 256 Sport with rubber coated sides and NO moving parts. I think this one will last a lot longer. I hesitated to buy an iPod or a similar HDD based device because of moving parts. The only drawback to the Rio is that it's still USB 1.1, but based on amazon reviews it's virtually indestructible.

The point I'm trying to make is that people choose depending on their lifestyle and how much (ab)use they're going to give to their MP3 gadget, as well as how much use/life they want out of it.

Avoiding the registration makes NYT's job of removing false addresses easier, which is not the effect you want to have on a soul-sucking-registration page, but since they wouldn't budge, I guess we have to find a different way of dealing with it. There are also people out there that value their privacy and can't bring themselves to lie on registration forms.
