In 1950, residents of Rome, NY could purchase (not morgage, purchase) a house for one to two months wages as a factory worker. Show me where, in this country or any other, where this is still possible.
Show me the savings and investments of the lower classes. Oh, show me their debt as well, and then tell me how rich we all are.
Money has to be made, by producing goods and services desired. Anything granted by the government is a hand-out from money taken at gun point from those that produce wealth. Money is an indicator of productivity, nothing more.
I suppose someone like Mr. Grosso (of the New York Stock Exchange) gets paid $140 million because he is just so damned productive, eh? He must do the job of.....2800 average (fat, lazy) Americans! Amazing!
Oh, wait, I guess criminal coinspiracy is a form of productivity, after all. My bad.
Gee, you must be in the Midwest. Or the South. Because you obviously have never met someone from outside America (i.e. what you and your yokel friends call The World). Get some culture, Arkie.
You would think that 50 years of the US subsidizing Europes existance, plus the thousand year head start on civilization would put your standard of living tremendously beyond our own. However, the opposite is the case. Somehow the side affect of expecting others to pay for your lifestyle has resulting in productivity hits that are more significant than the savings from having us subsidize your defense.
Ah, it seems like you are forgetting the complete and utter destruction of Europe's industrial base during World War II. When 1945 rolled around, one country still had factory after factory manufacturing goods: the United States. One country was able to shift a fully-mobilized workforce from building weapons of war to building consumer goods: the United States. One country managed to use it's wealth to "subsidize" the rebuilding of the industrialized world. Oh, by the way, those subsidies came with crippling billions of interest. We have been profiting from this imbalance for your "50 years", and now, like Microsoft, are going to have to relearn the meaning of competition.
To all the parents out there: Isn't it just delightfully amusing when your children decide that they are more grown up than you, and "know better?"
'Atrocity' is a heavy word for ruining the DNS system as we know it, when compared to the senseless killing of thousands. I hearby coin the term 'etrocity' (possible alternate:
e-trocity) to fill this hole in our vocabulary. You're welcome.
First, spreading your wings is what being an officer is all about. Second, you're there to lead - not be the technical expert. If you need technical expertise, that's what your senior enlisted are for and anything beyond them can be contracted out.
No wonder the military systems are such a mess. You just described the archtypical manager. In the IT world you need technical expertise along with the ability to make important decisions, if the systems are to be utilized in an efficient fashion. What you are describing sounds like just another organization full of Pointy-Haired (Crew-Cutted?)-Bosses.
We are all called consumers, after all. Pigs at a trough do not prepare, modify, or share their food in any way; they simply devour as much as possible in as short of time as possible. Apparently, the same is expected of us all.
I have heard some interesting things come out of the mouths of UN workers here in NYC. They basically confirm the theories of this post: Specifically, I've heard about meetings where US and British envoys have discussed strategic control of the world's oil supply (or a large percentage thereof). For what long-term purpose? To make sure English-speaking civilization maintains its superiority over the "enemy" of tomorrow: an ascendant China.
Take this with a grain of salt, of course. But word comes from someone who actually agrees with the policy and not a frothed-mouth conspiracy theorist. I, for one, suspect that it is true.
Precisely. If I say "Thomas Jefferson had slaves!" that does not mean that all of his contributions to society, politics, and history are instantly invalidated. It's all about what you do, not who you are or what you like to eat for breakfast.
I bet we see that even the laziest and most incompetent admins patch this hole before the attack hits. The tedious overtime they just put in will be ample motivation, I suspect.

That crazy gun-nut has done more for the OSS movement than you ever have or ever will, Mr. dhowells. Care to explain why you should even be compared to Utah hillbillies?
What is with the presumptive use of 'us' in your posts? Speak for yourself, and do not hide in (or speak for) a nonexistant crowd.
They would rather go down fighting. And you know, I kind of admire them for that.
I don't know about you, but I only want underdogs to go down fighting. Titans should fall swiftly and (preferrably) dramatically, like Goliath. That particular story would've been pointless if he crushed David in his death throes, neh?
Tell me you didn't get that example from some sort of mystery story, or DIY mystery story (can't even begin to imagine which one). The calvary sabre inscription was the clue to the puzzle.
I feel bad for the girl, and I know we've been down this road on other RIAA threads, but where were the parents?
There is a single parent. They live in Government Housing. This means that the mother is mostly likely out working a minimum-wage job to meet NYC living expenses. She keeps her kids off the streets, off of drugs, and out of gangs; but no, she needs to make sure they don't infringe on the copyrights as well. Would you mind covering her shift so she can watch her kids 24x7?
Comeon, you sound as if you live in the metro area.
For someone living in the projects, mostly likely in one of NYC's ghettos, what is the definition of "illegal?"? Would it be "unauthorized distribution of copyrighted works" or would it be drug dealing, stealing, fighting, prostitution, and stuff like that? You know, the stuff that the other kids/young adults/old addicts do outside her apartment building every day?
Their (the Torres') perception of the situation is a pretty good example of what most of the population believes about file sharing. It's about as much of a crime as jaywalking. Yes, any street cop can give a ticket for jaywalking, but only if he's a complete loser. Same principle applies here.
You do not blindly sue your customers if you do not want a media-induced feeding frenzy to follow. You have your law lackeys sift through the available targets and choose ones that won't make you look like a monster. It's simple, really.
The arrogance and carelessness of the RIAA's actions are astounding. The media has picked up on it, and it going to make its displeasure known through near unianimous editoral policy. Do not expect to see very many pro-industry articles in the near future.
On a positive note along these lines, three previously-uninformed coworkers brought up today's story to me on separate occasions, and expressed their outrage at the 12-year-old-martyr situation. Consumer alienation is spreading faster that a RPC worm.....
If you found Star-Trek retarded, you probably found Homer's Odyssey retarded as well; they are both just adventure stories. Are you saying that Issac Asimov, Arthur Clarke, and Neal Stephenson all have "notoriously shallow understandings" of science? Or are you making the much more reasonable assertion that bad writers produce bad stories?
Based upon the no-nonsense tone of your post, I would heartily recommend the Science section of the bookstore for your next trip. You will find it to be convieniently free of the literary devices known as "plot," "characters," "symbolism," "theme," and "dialogue," among others. People with an interest in Real Science (such as yourself) should not have to bother with such sophistries.
Looks like we get all the down sides of the cyberpunk future with none of the attendant benefits. No wetware, orbital habitats, or arcologies -- but man, we do have the Sprawl, megacorps, and cortex bombs...
However, I'd suggest that Heinlein wasn't "chauvinistic", just that he celebrated the differences between men and women (which any sane individual recognizes, no?).
I would have to amend that to state that he wasn't chauvinistic for the time. His women are all undoubtably super-capable, super-intelligent, super-athletic, and, of course, super-sexual and totally uninhibited. What it bakes down to, basically, is this: If a woman is a possession, why not possess a really really sharp, useful and dynamic one?
With that said, I will again say that his ideas and particular fancies were quite progessive for the times he lived in. At least he didn't expect women to be silent and in the kitchen (and baring offspring).
Since when does these schmucks start thinking that I as a consumer doesnt have the right to take apart, enable/disable features, and smash to smithreens whatever shit I buy from them?
For nearly as long as they have been making motherboards. Ever boot into the BIOS on a machine, only to see three or four switchable options (or none at all)? That is the manufacturer deciding (implicitly, perhaps) that they don't want you playing with PCI timings or shadowing or whatnot. It is for this reason that many motherboard reviews examine the level of BIOS configurability; a true customizer would never want a crippled board.
Show me the savings and investments of the lower classes. Oh, show me their debt as well, and then tell me how rich we all are.
