Maybe they should become IT psychologists and explain users why they shouldn't click on attachments and saying that "the data wasn't all that important"...
When Tim Berners-Lee was writing the software to serve GIF files, he asked co-worker Silvano de Gennaro for a few pictures of the singers. One of the band photos was among the first five pictures published on the Web.
And the drivers offten suck. Imagine scanner drivers that dump DLLs into My Documents every time their (ugly skinned) scan program is running. This is Epson on Windows 2000. I resorted to make tham hidden so the users of that system don't get irritated by them. When I'll buy a scanner for my system I will have to look for something that is supported, but I'll don't have to install stupid drivers and get a SANE frontend of my choice.
Those all knowing blog poeple with their digitization... The searching algorithms are the tool of the devil! I can look trought 10 books a day and that's the way I likes it.

First, why does being read through a web browser count as a negative?
Do you like webmail?
Second, I know at least some software has a threaded mode
So does Slashdot, but it's still a pain to read. And you don't get to choose what software your forum of interest will use.
While perhaps not as automatic as a newsreader, most forums I've seen also mark unread posts.
phpBB does that, at least it tries. But marking only happens per topic and each time you log out all topics get marked as read. Very easy to miss stuff.
Emacs. It's also two letters more productive then a Mac. ;)
You don't know Magnatune? But I don't think they'll rise the suggested price...
Now we only how to find some magic to compare to...

So a despot always says the truth?
Information is not despotism either.
Because there are only big broadcasters. Or do they make such things precisely to squash small players?

The GPL does not talk about use.
But their interfaces make them unusable. A private news server beats them all.
So can I view only unread posts? No? Thanks for destroying ease of use.
The problem is that you have to sign up with Firstgate to be able to pay.
But it's not Agent, it's Gnus.
Private news servers can be moderated.
They know. They just seem to have other plans...
Like "reading trough a web browser", "no threads" and "you remember what you have read, not your computer"?
"There is no password"
Just look at the source. :-D
Read it while you have the right to.
