How many slashdotters *don't* spend more than 100 bucks a month on their evil carrier overlord of choice...

Go ahead, ask around, I will wait.

I pay ZERO for my telephone services. I'm disabled and used my lifeline benefit to get a free cell phone, via reachoutwireless, that includes 60 minutes per month. I use about 10 minutes each month and the unused minutes DO roll over. I have a Google Voice number that I give out to everyone so they can leave messages for me. But then, the only people who ever call are Doctor's offices reminding me of appointments.

  2. Ad-Blocking on The Morality of Web Advertisement Blocking · · Score: 1

WAY back in the early days of the graphics driven internet I used to use a filtering program called PROXIMITY to filter web sites for me. This was to change background colors, fonts, remove items to speed up page loading as I was on a dial up connection, etc., all strictly for my own viewing pleasure. Then X started their pop up/under cam campaign. I started filtering that out with Proximity. As ads became more prevalent I had to adjust the filtering more so my meager bandwidth wouldn't be overwhelmed When cable connections became available I continued to filter ads out as I was now able to do some serious multi-tasking. When Proximity's author dropped support for the program some of it's users banded together, created their own support network, and began writing filters for everyone to use. This worked great for a few years. I started using the Marathon browser a few years ago and found that I could accomplish the same filtering with that program. About that time FIrefox became available with plug-ins for ad-blocking.

Currently, I have an 8 MB/Sec internet connection and letting ads load is no longer much of a bandwidth issue. However, I've become quite comfy with nice, clean, ad-free pages that load F // A // S // T and use little memory. For this reason, I continue, and will always continue, to block all ads.

I take a far far dimmer view of telemarketers. (Henceforth to be known as Scumbags of the Earth). I put my name on the list, as well as that of anyone else who asked me to, back when they 1st began letting people sign up. That way, when the list went online, we were there on day one. I STILL recieve calls from telemarketers to this day. Yes, I file a complaint each and every time. Yes, each and every time, the scumbags tell me that they comply with the list and try to give me the song and dance routine about how long you have to be on the list before it's effective and/or tell me that the 'current version' of the list doesn't have my name/phone number on it. All the while, trying to hang up before giving me the information needed to file a complaint. I've even had them give me area codes/addresses that didn't match. Then try to say that I misheard them when they gave me the area code. Lyingpieceofcraplooserseverylastoneofthem.

500 is WAY too high. Any single complaint should result in the telemarketers company being instantly shut down. If the call was an honest mistake, the company may resume operations. If not, then the company should be liquidated, the owners assests confiscated, and the proceeds be distributed to various relief agencies like the Red Cross. As for the company who hired the scumbags, the penalty would not need be so steep. Say, an amount equel to their previous years Gross. Not net, gross. No "Pattern of Behavior" or "abberation" BS either. Can I get away with a robbery or a murder based on my "Pattern of Behavior" or some other "Abberation"???

Perhaps such measures would encourage companies to obey the law.

I found Netflix to be a complete paradigm shift in renting movies.

    - I set up a list of 150+ movies that I wanted to rent.
    - When new movies come out or I think of something else I want to rent, I just add it to the list.
    - You can change the order of the movies in the list anytime you want.
    - When you send the movie back, Netflix automatically sends you the next movie in the list.
    - You can keep the movie indefinantly if you wish.
    - I found that I would rent movies that I wouldn't otherwise rent. Especially documentaries and OLD movies. Things I wouldn't have rented because I couldn't justify the BB price.
    - If Netflix doesn't carry a title you can request same. Netflix is real good at adding titles at customer requests.
    - Oh, and they carry a HUGE selection.

Buying the 5 at a time level was the only way for Netflix to be worth the price. Otherwise, you're always waiting 4 to 6 days for your movies. Netflix's turn around time is virtually same day service but you're still waiting on the post office.

Another response, to a different question, was 15 some odd pages on what must have been 50 different topics.

Oh yeah, the automated response system was useful.......for laughs.

Medicaid doesn't accept bills over a year old, so the bill cannot be resubmitted to them with the correct billing code. Just to make it more fun, I was still laid up in bed.
