    I always thought it measured the ability to do well on IQ tests.

    That is a redundant tautology, like saying weight is your ability to depress scales.
    The fact is that IQ is important because it predicts so many things, even though we don't really know what it is.
    And it stays remarkably consistent - which leads to some unpleasant truths, that means it is not very popular in some circles.

    Any answer should also explain US coinage - why they keep worthless pennies in circulation, but no coins of any meaningful value. Their biggest coin in common use is the "quarter", worth about 15c and buys ... ummm ... just about nothing.

        Oh - and they drive on the wrong side of the road too.

    I got caught trying to convert miles-per-gallon because I used the wrong type of gallon.

    OK, question answered. The question "is sugar toxic" sounds at first like a nutter one, but the TFA, and the Lustig lecture clarify what they mean, and provide real supporting evidence. Adding a post with a laundry list of unsubstantiated dietary conspiracy theories does nothing to add "content".
          So evidence please - Why is TFA wrong about sucrose being (almost) as bad as HFCS? They have similar amounts of fructose, which is the suspect here. (And the others are off-topic here.)
        All the problems that get blamed on HFCS, we have here in Australia, but we use sucrose instead.

    But the point being made is that sugar is toxic in "normal" western quantities. I thought that was the clear implication.

    just as high fructose corn syrup is more toxic than regular sugar.

    For pity sake, RTFA. HFCS only has 10% more fructose than sucrose does.

    While refined carbohydrates like white sugar and white flour are things most people do use too much of, they're not half the problem HFCS, aspartame, and the potential organ damage from GMO corn. Priorities...

    If we had any significant passenger rail use, the security would be just as tight.

    You'd think so, but evidence says otherwise. Look in Europe, which has a lot more terrorism that the US. Airports have high security, while trains, high-speed or otherwise, have very little. Its the same everywhere else too.

    The TV bosses have published guidelines to discourage more.

    No, not belittling what is going on, which is unprecedented, but dismissing the media hysteria and mis-reporting which makes people think it is worse than the tsunami!
        If I say that the nuclear bombing of Hiroshima was not as bad as the firebombing of Tokyo, am I trivialising it? I think not.

    All reactors survived the earthquake OK. It was the 15m tsunami that damaged the cooling systems.
    And "still build"? No, the French at least have been yelling that newer designs do not have this vulnerability.

    Still, almost all the plant workers survived the tsunami, which is more than you can say for their neighbours.

    They're claiming 60% efficiency?

    No, TFA is bullshit. 60% is the theoretical maximum, which is the same as a steam/gas tubbine. Is this one?
    They don't say what the prototype achieves. Diesel can be 35%, which is the current choice for a series hybrid, e.g. locomotives.

    It probably means the engine is constant speed. Maybe useful in parallel hybrid with CV gearbox?

    well, it was capable of receiving both the 240-line Baird and the 405-line EMI systems. so yes, in it's day it was high-def!

    Both obsolete, so it really is not "Working" any more without 625-line ability.

    No drug company will provide a cure unless they're forced to, there is far more profit in providing temporary relief from the symptoms so that the patient has to keep buying your drugs indefinitely.

    Have you ever wondered why you have to keep buying or making tinfoil hats, when one good sheet-metal one could last a lifetime?

    Meh, million of women mess around with their hormones every month just as a method of birth control,

    And thanks to those (hundreds of?) millions of women, we have a good understanding of the risks. The modern pill reduces some risks and increases others, nothing major. Condoms are no replacement as they are less reliable, and lets face it, not a lot of fun. Best thing about long-term relationships is ditching the condoms :-) By "more successful methods" I take it you are advocating abstinence? Or dry humping?

    'j' is near enough. Chinese people have enough trouble pronouncing Mandarin. Countless millions cannot pronounce "sh", which is used in Mandarin, but not in southern dialects.
