    both of my parents (turning 78 this year) use email, but my dad was a telephone engineer. On the other hand, I have a sister-in-law and her husband who don't even own a computer, and frankly they are too technically incompetent to even know how to turn one on, they are in their early 60s.

    I just added more RAM to all 3 of my XP machines, due to updates running amuck with RAM usage. Now they are back to original performance.
    My Vista laptop (that my daughter uses) is just too fluffy for me. Probably good for people that like fluffy and a whole lot of barriers for security.
    I still can't get on NOAA's web site and see the animated RADAR with that laptop.

    yep, that "monster" cable is good looking/feeling stuff all right.
    But unless you're pumping 500 Watts of power, 16 AWG "zip" cord is all that is necessary, IMHO. And don't solder the wire ends, just the tips so that they don't fray out, making sure that what goes under the speaker connector gets nice and smashed for the minimum resistance.
    And I do think that we're all missing a business opportunity of two here...

    I'm still trying to figure out WTF a "break-in" period will do for wire. Perhaps the molecules need to align themselves?
    See Bob Pease's (National Semiconductor) comments on this sort of stuff. And is anyone paying attention to how the cables are terminated into a typical speaker?

    Isnt' there more important things to worry about than someone driving solo in the car pool lane? Like:
    1. assholes cutting in an out of lanes without using a turn signal
    2. assholes not using turn signals and talking on the cell phone
    3. assholes not using turn signals and putting on makeup
    4. assholes not using turn signals and putting on makeup and smoking a cigarette
    5. assholes not using turn signals and eating
    6. assholes not using turn signals to tell me that they are changing lanes. The goes directly to SAFETY and COURTESY. Didn't these people have mothers that taught them to be polite?
    7. people making abrupt speed changes on the freeway (they should get a physics lesson when they do that, and sometimes they do but not as often as I would like).
    Not using turn signals was on some agency's list of items that lead to road rage, maybe it was the pope's. But I've never seen anyone ticketed for that because it's hard to prove in court. But if someone goes 10 miles an hour over the speed limit, look out. It's because they can measure the speed. everything else is subjective.

    at University of Cincinnati, we too had to have a TI SR50A in 1975. I had learned to use a slide rule in 7th (1970) grade in the very-geek algebra class.

    I still use TANGO/DOS. I can fit everything that I need on a 5.25" floppy. It runs fast, has pull down menus (not all fluffy like windoze), it always finds all of the errors and makes perfect PCBs.
    I have also used PCAD and OrCAD, both windoze versions, and am always dissatified with the user interface, too many menus to pull down. They try to do too much for you. I can see it in a large company, but for a 1-man shop it's way too much overhead.

    very, very, very good advice. BTW, I've "stolen" 802.11b/g (I hate "wi-fi" also, it's clearly a marketing phrase), should I go turn myself in? I have a daughter that "steals" it from one of her neighbors in her apartment complex, should she turn herself in? To me, it's like a RADAR or LASER detector for driving: if it's in the airwaves, I should be able to do anything that I want with it, as long as I don't cost anybody any money. Except for speeding tickets, that's a tax anyway.

    If it is only partially conductive, the ESD (Electro-Static Discharge) properties would get my attention (safe discharge paths for cheap). And if it could shield the circuits from emissions and susceptibility, it would be a winner in my book.

    There a technical reason that computer enclosures are metal: radio frequency emissions. That's why it would be impossible to build those in volume (to where the FCC would notice) without a metal inner shell. Did anyone ever wonder why the designer cases (clear panels, etc.) aren't built by Dell and others?

    That was my first though: clear your browser history. and cookies, and RECENT. Anyone that surfs for porn knows how to do this, just in case someone else using the computer gets nosy.
    I just bought a Vista notebook computer, that is one of the nicer features: there's a single button that you can push (once you find it) that clears out everything.

    hmmm... that was not my intention. I've had that 'sig' for over 4 years, and have only had contact with "the church" for the last 3.
    You seem to know a lot about them. If I might ask, is this personal experience or just web research on cults?

    very thorough answer, more than I expected. that was actually a trick question, I know exactly how it works, at least from an electrical standpoint. The original units were indeed a wheatstone bridge because they were all analog. MarQ VII, and VIII (I'll bet you haven't heard of that one yet) all have A/D converters with microcontrollers doing the work, measuring resistance by applying a small amount of current and measuring the resultant voltage. After that, it's all magic (refering to what the auditor does). or voodoo. But you've got them nailed on what they do. or don't do. or just plain do-do.
    I've met some of them, they are nice people but very sheep-like, they need direction in their life and C$T provides that for them, to a fault.
    What gives me the most heartburn is what they've done to people that try to leave. Can you say: "cult"??

    That's where he gets most of his mis-information, particularly about psychology. He makes it sound like real science because that's how L.Ron Hubbard spoke and wrote.
