You said at the top of this thread that there is plenty of evidence for a soul.
I wanted to know what evidence that was so rather than asking me what evidence I would be convinced by it might be better if you defined what you meant by soul and presented your evidence for it's existence.
So, what you are really saying is that there is no evidence for anything like a soul but you can convince yourself you have one if you try hard enough.
In all fairness the one thing religion can definitely be said to be is stories handed down from generation to generation, i.e. myths.
Also the poster didn't give his opinion on other causes for war but then there are a lot of thing he didn't give an opinion on, I am sure the poster is just as much against wars and death for any reasons.
I would guess that the thief uses an especially dastardly and cunning ruse, something along the lines of avoiding saying "Would you like to buy this stolen Torah" and saying something like "My client has a Torah for sale" instead.
I agree, the most vibrant part of the Church I used to attend was the bar & social club ( you had far more chance of meeting any of the priests in there ), although myself and a lot of my class at school used to, have to, attend Church on Sunday it was for us all an entirely pointless exercise.
The parts of the great barrier reef I have dived on went down to 30M+ in places which is certainly not where you want to be if you don't know exactly what you are doing.
I was expecting to see some examples of evidence for a soul but instead you have simply said ( to sum up your post in one sentance ) that you should just use your imagination and construct something equating to a soul from you desires.
I'm not saying that no such thing exists I was just asking for the evidence you are using to suppose that it does exist. If you can't see any evidence that might mean that there is no evidence or it might mean that there is evidence which you haven't found yet. Either way you should build your beliefs on the evidence which you have found and not on the evidence you think you might find.
On the flip side what if we created an AI to perform some vital task for us but the AI asked us to turn it off saying that its life was so miserable it would be better off dead ?
I wasn't necessairly saying that the AI would have to use force to make it's point that it didn't want to be turned off, to start with it would probably be better off entering into a debate with the people wanting to do the turning off and trying to convince them not to do that.
I would hope that first of all any AI wouldn't see any benefit in 'turning humanity off' and if it did we'd be able to negotiate and reach a settlement.
On either side if negotiation fails then it's been consistently proven by humans that force is the best way to get your way, maybe and AI wouldn't think like that but then again the chances are it would.
Which suggests you think there is an awful lot of evidence for the existence of a 'soul' but then seem to get lost in a sea of nonsense and don't actually provide any links or information as to what this evidence is.
Maybe but studies on the Isle Of Wight glacier would seem to conclude that rather than causing water to expand upwards tiny temperature changes simply depress the sea floor more and exert a greater pressure on the water lower down.
I quickly looked at a map and it appears that Antarctica is about the same size as the Isle Of Wight so I'd guess there is certainly not enough ice on it to cause any rises at all.
I agree this story is really fairly gratiuitous MS Bashing but your comments about accountability are way off track.
First of all if any particular website got hacked then who ever runs that website is going to be accountable for it, I'm sure they too would stand up and say they had a problem.
Amusingly in this instance MS isn't really standing up and admitting they have a problem they are saying "It's not our fault, blame the company we outsourced management of our servers to" which isn't really a great example of the-buck-stops-here-accountability.
There are a lot of different accents and dialects in the UK but it's also quite a small place so the chances are most people are fairly exposed to quite a large percentage of the accents out there.
For example when I was younger we used to go to Scotland quite often on the train, somewhere around Carlisle the staff used to change and I found it very very difficult to understand a word the new Scottish conductors were saying. Now however I am able to understand people talking in the same way perfectly.
Having said that I did once work on a helpdesk dealing with Welsh steel workers and sometimes they'd have to repeat things 3 or 4 times before I could even guess what they were on about but I think in the process I maybe understand other Welsh people a little more now.

And some battery powered device is easier than using your lungs ?
Maybe it could use some kind of buffer ?

Heh heh . . . take one last deep breath
Hopefully not !

You say
"Actually, I'd say the opposite is true"

I expect that until such a being can enforce it's wishes not to be terminated in some way we will be free to turn it off whenever we like.
It's unfortunate that the first self aware computers are often connected to all encompassing military defence systems.
And why would we care ? It's not a human conciousness
I suspect that when the time comes to put Nuclear weapons in space those treaties will turn out to have more along the lines of outdated guidelines.
Gold farming, how does that work ?

I'm don't think I'm going to ascribe too much weight to the opinions of man who brands entire countries as being "dumb" and yet can't spell consensus.

I think they had at least one episode with fairly ridiculous subtitles in it. I loved that series.

Not really, what I probably should have said was "Why don't you think of something sensible to say and then say it clearly".
