  1. Re:TEACHERS? on DHS to Begin Collecting DNA of Anyone Arrested · · Score: 1

Upon googling, I find you are correct. But the three ladies at my DMV all agreed it was for deadbeat dads when I refused. After about ten minutes they wore me down and I gave up, though. It's how they win--I needed to drive, and they knew it.

Hey--that's to help us with the serious, serious problem of deadbeat dads. Obviously within the scope of DMV responsibilites. The women's fingerprints are just a bonus, I suppose.

Huh. What the heck was I doing last night then, in that room with 22 other folks who voted Republican, nominating delegates? Were we just playing really, really wrong poker, with sign-in sheets instead of a pot?

My parents came close. Long ago, in a land far away, pick-em-up trucks didn't come with crew cabs. My sister and I rode curled up in the fetal position behind the seats in cold weather, and in the bed in good weather. We did this for a decade. Really. more. We're okay. The truck was needed, and we didn't have money for more vehicles.

I'm pretty sure the dog made it. And was happy to see everyone when he got there.

It's just like everything else out there, use in moderation. Don't let your kid play Star Wars Lego all day long, every day, whether they're 3 or 10 (or 20 for that matter). Also, don't let them eat bananas all day long, either. And tooth brushing, they shouldn't do that all day, every day.

People are pretty sturdy. If you parent, as a verb, and observe your kids, you'll figure out what's okay, and what's causing them to freak out. Avoid the latter.

    >School is mandatory.

Schooling is, public schooling is not.

Parents uncomfortable with the amount of homework assigned their child have several options. If more parents shopped around for a school that fit their family, perhaps public schools would start listening more readily to parents and less to the singing strings of the federal government funds.

Its not so much that the schools need the 8 hours to socialize the kids, it's where the kids would go if they weren't in school. Many families depend on school to keep the kids for this long, if not longer with early-care and after-care.

We can't have packs of seven year olds rampaging through the hillsides, after all.

Don't forget the above--it's a good one too.

If folks are going to vaccinate all their tender-yeared girls to save them from cancer, shouldn't they be making sure the carriers, you know, the penis-wielders, are also inoculated? A long-term study would be a beautiful thing to see before we started letting Merck test things on a bunch of prepubescent girls, eh? Or, you know, just go ahead, hope for the best.

The tax expenditures you list for homeschoolers vary wildly from state to state--and most don't require more than one of them. Several require none. I'm sorry to burst your bubble.

My property taxes go for the education of kids not my own. I homeschool. I am willing to settle for this. Telling homeschool parents that they have a responsibility to fix a system, if they believe it inherently flawed, is a peculiar stance to take.

But go with it, maybe you'll eventually find the parent willing to 'fix' the public schools. Maybe by freeing the kids.

    >Co-operative play is what's missing, that's all.

This is something that has recently baffled me. All of these thirty-something guys that now have wives and families (no, not most of /., but there are some) still want to game. If they can play with their wives, more the better. My husband and I swept through Baldur's gate, and I could not believe there weren't more games out there like it for us to play. Now we've got Baldur's Gate II, and Champions of Norath, and this is what we can play. Naturally, he kicks my ass for the most part, since he's been through the damn thing three times while I've been feeding babies--but he'll hang back and let me frost a battle when he knows I can or want to.

I am likely one of the only people on Earth obsessed with Pitball, because it was something we could play together that I didn't totally suck at. Of course, it was limited, easy to learn, and didn't involve magic-users or anything good, so he won't play anymore. I still like it. And if I get him drunk enough, he'll play.

I know it's a teenage boy genre, but I'm checking out stupid videogame magazines in the bookstore once a month, looking for cooperative games for us to play. God knows we don't want to have to talk to each other.
