  1. Re:Living in space means living in caves on Robots To Go Spelunking In Martian Caves? · · Score: 1

If we could just send a manned mission already. NASA has the budget and capability. Yes they would be there forever, but with some good caves this would be doable. Never underestimate the resourcefulness of someone living on a new planet. :)

  2. How about this for a reality series? on William Shatner to Star in New Reality TV Series · · Score: 2, Funny
In terms of reality TV, what would it be like to have a reality show with trekkies participating in the same studio that the actors normally play in? What would make this one interesting, is that you could have the ship actually being piloted though VR space with internet participants.

Then, just to make it interesting you could, in the same way they do for MUDs, allocate points to internet participants who (via videoconferencing) have the most convincing characters, and then have them participate with greater ships, which they got by using their points.

Of course there would have to be some 'mission' to the whole thing (pick your trekkie episode), or perhaps a second crew on another ship (another studio).

Finally the studios would have to be modified to allow the participants to actually live there for a while...

Maybe Google has an old pentium in their server farm somwhere. I think it was called the repentium or something and, given the right calculation to do, resulted in spectacular errors. Maybe certain texts refer it to this incorrect entry in the multiplication table? Yea right, like they would be using a pentuim 60! Then again, I don't remember paying anything for the service...

I haven't looked at one of the cookies myself, but if memory serves me correctly you could hack the cookie to make you look like someone else. And then, once you see that you have a valid user, ie. >3 searches, then you could happily search knowing that you've beaten the system.

On the other hand, it could be that the entries in the cookie are encrypted and that would put you stright out of luck, but given the number of google users, a valid unencrypted entry should not be that hard to find.

Well now that we might be predicting when and where hurricanes will occur, do you think it may convince religious zealots that hurricanes are just part of life? Still, I can't help laughing. This story was categorized very appropriately!

  11. If you can't beat them accept the threat model? on DRM and Threat Analysis · · Score: 5, Interesting
I don't know if saying that the adoption of a threat model isn't just a nice way of saying that you have to accept what you cannot change. The problem of napsterisation, is more complex than that.

It would be far better to approach this problem on a social rather than a technical security basis.

I would perhaps like to see a model where you license a song for life. Something along the lines of paying $1.50 for a song and you get a digital certificate that licences you to own the song, no matter where you got it from.

That would mean that I could get the song quickly from my buddy down the road, and while that is downloading via the loacal bandwidth I could log on to BMI, Sony or whoever (The RIAA homepage!?!?), and pay my royalties.

No wait, I could just log on to the artist's homepage and pay the $.50 directly to him/her/them!!!

  12. If you switch the 50s and 100s in an ATM on Amazon Sells IPAQs for $10 · · Score: 1
If people can get something for nothing they become very greedy.

I spoke to a guy refilling an ATM once and asked him if they ever switch the denominations when they refill the teller machine. He said that it has happened once or twice and that you can see the logs show how people keep withdrawing 50s that come out as 100s.

In those cases they just correct the error by adjusting the balances of the individuals' accounts. I think they also gave them each a call and probably got responses like: "REALLY!?, I had no idea the machine was giving the wrong bills, I always draw money one 50 at a time! Besides, it was your error, you can't/shouldn't correct it now at my expense!"
