It has more to do with poor design of the power infrastructure
well, bad design is linked to deregulation, since good design takes time, and deregulation wants money fast. It goes the same for taking good care of the existing installation : it costs money, and deregulation is about profit more than service.
the true fact is that deregulation is a joke, it was well seen with the english rail system. And the joke is on us !
i'm not going to read every comment since it is not that much interesting to see thee great #1 masters of the world falling into darkness because of failing powerplants...
lots of jokes can be make, but the point is that everyone, including big money eating corps SHOULD USE LESS ENERGY. AND ALSO LESS WATER.
err, i'm getting a littla carried away.
Talking about wired, a while back they published a great article [wired.com] about the energy grid.
My friends Xp box just went flaky, when you boot it up it says it has some kind of RPC problem then shuts down after some 30 seconds.
yes, that happened to me too. i patched and it stopped. but maybe it's too late, huh ?
last time i went to an easyeverything cybercafe i noticed that on logout the pc would reboot and re-install a fresh image of the whole os on the disk. I think it got the image from the network but i can't recall what soft they used to do it (it had a strange name)...
Of course it takes some more time on rush hour (like 10-20mn) but they have lots of pc so...
and also, too bad for installing key loggers then..
