  1. Re:read the license? on PHP Not Moving To The GPL · · Score: 1

Well said, companies like BSD/LGPL style licenses because they can use the libraries in their commercial products that they don't want to open source. I use the GPL license when I just want to create a product for "fun" that I don't need to make money on. Really all this boils down to is different licenses are appropriate for different types of products, PHP decided to go with their own, it's been working so far, so why change it?

    Well said...
'...a single executive organization responsible for software integrity and information assurance'
Sounds pretty scarry to me, one organization to rule all others using Windows Longhorn.
  3. Re:Why? on Why MySQL Grew So Fast · · Score: 1

MySQL isn't really comparable to MS Access, it is more on the same level as the MS SQLServer product. I've even seen reports that MySQL has better performance under a load of 100 users or more than SQLServer and close to the performance of the bigger DB Vendors like Oracle.

  4. Only 10% of the city's water supply by 2008? on Massachusetts Considering Desalination Plants · · Score: 3, Insightful

I support the use of desalinization as a source for water, it is better ecologically and economically, than taking your water in from other places, just look at Mono Lake. I'm suprised that our technology in desalinization isn't better considering the largest Desalination plant in the country hopes to provide only 10% of it's city's water supply by 2008!

I find myself always searching for remakes of these classics like M.U.L.E.
I played tonns of M.U.L.E. on my C64 in my youth (along w/ Lords of Conquest) and played Traders as well when that came out (cool M.U.L.E.-type game that also had a robot battle sequence), if you are interested in games like M.U.L.E., check out Traders.

I think people studying software in school (CS majors, that is) should continue to be required to take calculus.
What technical school did you get your "Computer Science" degree at (or maybe it was back in the 60's)?
CS Majors at my College (CSUS) were required to take Calculus I and II, as well as other advanced Math courses. The only courses CS majors didn't have to take which engineers and Math majors did have to take was Calc. III (3d stuff) and Linear Algebra.

I don't believe for one second that this is primarily about oil, but it certainly isn't about the national security of the U.S.

Amen, George W.'s war with Iraq isn't about oil and for sure not about national security, it's about the Bush legacy and George W. attempting to finish what his dad started in the Gulf War.

I think in Bush's mind this war will give him more popularity and keep him in Office for another term (Presidents are always re-elected during war time) .

  8. 25th Anniversary of Free Long Distance on The 25th Anniversary of the BBS · · Score: 1, Funny

Shortly after the first BBS, the first C64 Hacker figured out how to rig his system to get free long distance telephone calls so that he/she could stay connected to Chicago from the West Coast 24/7.

And on the really cool BBS's you played Pimpwars, not Tradewars.

From the first page of the article: Warren Spector: I could feel myself getting more and more conservative. ... "What do you mean we should cut the skills system?" The coolest part about the original Deus Ex was the fact that you could specialize your character with unique stats (i.e. Hacker, Sniper), I really hope they don't do away with that system in the sequel.

  10. All Your Base Are Belong To Us on Engrish LOTR: The Two Towers Captions · · Score: 1

The humour is in the fact that these LOTR captions are a parody of the All Your Base Are Belong To Us video game cartoons which make fun of how bad Japanese to English translations sometimes are.
