Sooner or later cable companies will go to a model where you "subscribe" to shows similar to a podcast and the shows get downloaded to your box where you can watch them anytime you want. I would suspect you'll be able to pull any old shows off the servers too (perhaps a limit on the number of hours each month), all in DVD or better quality.

The only online music buying I'm interested in is lossless and DRM free. This is why I continue to buy CDs and not buy music online. I can rip the CDs and encode them with FLAC for a lossless file that I can play on a variety of devices and OSs. I get a physical backup of the music as a bonus. Why would I pay just as much for a DRM laced and lossy file from an online store? When the industy starts offering FLAC compressed WAV files for less than what a CD costs then I'll start buying.

AFAIK there are no plans to ban cable companies from leasing set top boxes, only requirements they allow me to use devices without leasing a set top box. Sounds like a good thing to me.

Certainly there are security issues with any OS. As long as you stay aware of current threats and stay on top of patching your systems you aren't usually in too much of a jam. In my experience Wells Fargo IT Security is pretty on top of threats and patching.

Regardless of what OS's you have used and like you must admit that OS2 is getting a little long in the tooth these days and really can't be expected to have all the features expected from the modern ATM. Remember these systems are not designed for use by experts and need to be able to read to you (for the blind) possibly change font size for those with eyesight problems, etc. My point is that ATMs are not simple and require a changing dynamic platform. I think that if the engineers at Wells Fargo feel OS2 is no longer able to provide the features they require in their ATMs they should replace it.

First let me say I love the interface and the "look" of the maps. The searching ability is quite good as well. That said, after pulling up maps around my home I was distressed to see several major highways "missing chunks" which made the directions to get places pretty strange. I pulled up maps of some relatives living in other cities and found phantom roads, missing roads and incorrect railroad crossings. This would be a great serivice if they could get some better mapping data or do a better job converting that data to visual maps. Incidentally, the "most correct" maps I have found come from mapsonus.com. Before you start jumping down my throat about this still being a beta and all, I know it is but with Google that makes little difference in the public's mind. After all a lot of people are using gmail daily, not just testing it.

The answer to that is probably yes, but quality would suffer because if it was just a voicemodem it would probably be on a Windows box and not be dedicated to VoIP. How would you like to be in the middle of a phone call and have your call dropped when someone has to reboot their spyware-ridden gaming rig? Requiring users to be running the Asterisk software gives you some idea that the machine won't get rebooted all the time. I could see someone (like Linksys) coming out with a dedicated hardware FXO device that you could use for something like this.

  10. Re:Great idea on P2P Meets PSTN, With Bellster · · Score: 1

I agree that phone companies are a fairly nasty monopoly and should be done away with. I'd love to see someone come in and replace the PSTN with QOS'd IP lines. For the time being this is a good way to get around PSTN charges, but if something like this catches on too much I could see the phone companies trying to pull a EULA on your phone lines where you agree not to circumvent their pricing structure. Actually, I'm surprised that they haven't gone after the big VoIP players like Vonage and tried to lock them out of routing VoIP traffic to the closest switch and paying only the local line charge.

You could set Asterisk to play a prerecorded message that the conversation might be listened to and/or recorded by a third party, this could be quite interesting. As long as you tell someone you're invading their privacy if they still go ahead with it all the more fun for you.

I know it's a lot to ask but try reading the article for a change. It's all based on you having an asterisk system and sharing through that. It's pretty easy to prevent outgoing long distance calls in your config file and if you can't keep your asterisk box secure maybe you should reconsider having one. Regarding the telemarketer thing... That's the beauty of this being P2P if you aren't sharing your own line you don't get to make many calls either, besides in the quantities telemarketers make calls it's just easier to have a trunk line put it.

Many of us are stuck with older digital cable boxes and so we're SOL if we want to use our MythBox to record digital cable (well I guess you could use an IR blaster but that's a terrible solution) I have looked forward to a "cable ready" type standard for digital communications for a long time. I despise set-top boxes which is one of the reasons I will not go to satellite. I eagerly await the say I can hook any of my devices (TV/VCR/PVR/etc) directly to the cable network! I'm going to hit everyone with wireless networking stuff or everyone with photo stuff, etc.) the only way to cover the whole show is to divide it up with a team of experienced people who stick to their area only.
