  1. Re:Market Forces on Broken Angels · · Score: 2, Interesting

It's not a different universe, just set several hundred years before. Market Forces mentions the fact that humans have reached Mars, implying that they haven't yet found the alien technology.

The development of the corporations (as a result of a series of 'domino' recessions rather than a post-apocalyptic event) seems to be the precursor to the corporations within his first two books. Even at the earlier time of Market Forces the corporations are wielding considerable power and openly manipulating governments.

On the whole, Market Forces is a good read, once you have put the authors world views to one side - The dedication gives ample warning that it may not be a balanced view of global corporations when it says:

"It's also dedicated to all those, globally, whose lives have been wrecked or snuffed out by the Great Neoliberal Dream and Slash-and-Burn Globalisation".

Regarding the Mad Max fears (which also raised their heads with me before I bought the book); the author does cite "a rather obvious debt of inspiration" to both Mad Max and Rollerball.

The first country to split the atom was actually Great Britain.

In 1932 John Cockcroft, together with Ernest Walton bombarded Lithium with high energy protons, and succeeded in transmuting it into Helium and other elements.

This was the first occasion on which an atomic nucleus of one element had been successfully changed to a different nucleus by artificial means.

This feat was popularly, if not strictly accurately, known as splitting the atom. Wikipedia.org

    No you're not. From theregister...

"Now the truth has emerged that Cohen in fact never used the letter to get hold of the domain and it may even have been a concoction of Network Solutions in order to undermine Kremen's case against both Cohen and Network Solutions.

Cohen had in fact tried several times to get hold of the Sex.com domain through phonecalls and emails to Network Solutions staff before finally succeeding in persuading an employee - with whom it is suspected he had a sexual relationship, and who later became head of the investigation team into the domain's unauthorised transfer - to change Kremen's ownership details to Cohen's over the phone."

Unless you were going into space by yourself surely the problem isn't that you will get hurt, but that your actions would cause hurt to someone else?

I don't think there are many plans for Buck Roger's solo type space flights at the moment, so any astronaut would also have the lives of the other astronauts in their hands. As you say you've got colour blindness I'm presuming its red green colour blindness. Do you really want to press the wrong colour button by accident?
