The Planetary Society has a very interesting article about the five years the rover Spirit has been on Mars. And I wrote this one about the Mars rovers in Dutch.

  7. Piece of debris of the external tank on Shuttle Discovery Lifts Off · · Score: 2, Informative

Spaceflight now has an image from the external tank video that shows a piece of debris falling off from the external tank, just after the solid boosters separated. It doesn't seem to fall in the shuttles direction.

  11. Re:esa working on same thing on Russia Working on Soyuz Replacement · · Score: 2, Insightful

However, the ATV is an unmanned cargo re-supply ship. What is interesting is that ATV and big-Soyuz together could replace the shuttle for an important part. No need for resupplies with the logistics modules (Raphaello, Leonardo and Donatello), which were launched with the shuttle. No need for the shuttle to launch large crews. You could reduce the shuttle's task mainly to construction. This is still a big task, but they got to finish ISS one day. From then on the need would be less.

  12. Amazon's best of 2003 on Best and Worst Books of 2003? · · Score: 2, Informative

Amazon has a best of 2003 booklist.

All as may be, but I still have often problems selecting my next book to read. Even books appraised by awards of site aren't always up my alley. Because I'm a bit of a slow reader, I want to make sure that the book I select is good.

Therefor I'd like to see a site for books like what allmusic.com does for music. (Allbooks.com brings you to Amazon.) Amazon is not exactly the same. It's ways to search for books are too limited.

Also I would like to choose my next book to read a bit like I select a recipe to cook on some recipe sites: I want a recipe with ingredient A and B, what recipes do you got with those.

Does any of this exist? (Maybe I should start such a site?)

  14. SOHO: Operational or scientific? on SOHO Is Back · · Score: 5, Interesting

The problem with SOHO is, that everyone has grown rather dependent on, what originally was a scientific, not an operational mission. It has now become a single point of failure in the gathering of important space weather forecasting data.

Space.com recently had an article about this. Without the constant stream of SOHO data, "it isn't too far off the mark that our forecasting methodology would revert back to the way it was many years ago," Joseph Kunches Chief, Space Weather Operations at the Space Environment Center told SPACE.com. "So without it for a little while...well, you keep your fingers crossed. You hope the Sun doesn't know," he said.

Interesting you say this, because in a recent newspaper article I read that coorporation between nations seems a lot to be left desired for.

This makes one wonder: Another high-res camera? Do we really need to verify existence of water again with basically the same kind of instruments on board of an orbiter?
