Nice idea, except for the fact that cable companies make money on the hope that their customers will pay for lots of speed......but only use a fraction of it checking email and minor web surfing.....not 24/7 P2P usage......there is no money in that right now with the current infrastructure.
"With Verisign, there is no choice. They took a common community resource that should benefit all equally and biased it in their favor. They were selected as guardians of the system, not burdened with a mandate to "improve it". If they really think themselves clever, have them deploy a new, distinct system and compete for our patronage."
It would be interesting if instead of typing in a mispelled name......it redirected you to a google search. I wonder how it would be received if they did that....and also didn't collect money from it, just offered it as a service....now THAT would be a better version of this whole fiasco, thats for sure.
I suddenly have the desire to start a company that makes copy-protection for CDs. Why? Because it keeps getting broken the day it comes out......and the labels still keep begging for new copy-protection schemes. I mean, seriously, this is an industry with very wealthy customers who are desperate for your product. It's like taking the miracle cure for baldness idea to a whole new level!
This is ENTIRELY true. People don't realize that sometimes you need to take hits in the short term to make things good in the long run. I hope when I own my own business someday that I'll be able to do things differently. I hope the market will support an honest business in the future....the way things are going now it doesn't look like it'd be possible.
" Hmm... my mom taught me not to taunt the people with the big lasers. Especially the big invisible lasers. Count yourself lucky she had a sense of humor."
And count yourself lucky that she didn't have any invisible sharks on hand either.
Yes, it probably will. However, how many times have you gone to a website with some very hard to find piece of information.....only to find that the last crucial link in your quest is a broken link? No thanks. If I'm using this for file storage, it needs 100% dependability....or at least improved dependability over current storage media.
"funny how everyone assumes gay and kiddie porn are the same. Gay and into porn - you *must* be a kiddie fiddler. sheesh..."
Oh get off your high-horse. Its frustrating that you got modded +5 insightful for this. He wasn't saying that at all, nor does he necessarily assume that. Flamerule made a comment a little ways up about how
"Because dc hub operators have freedom to ban what they want, and many of them don't want to see child/gay porn, if any porn at all."
So you see, he wasn't assuming they're the same. He was stating that it is the tendency on DC for hub operators to ban people with child/gay porn. Its not that their the same, they just both happened to be banned often.
Jesus....people and the conclusions they jump to..........
" Google is one of the few online tools I would consider paying for. If the paid-for version didn't include any ads/sponsored-placements at all, I'd probably do it."
I would hate to see Google go pay. If they did, it would be the end of their reign as king of search engines...not in terms of quality, but in terms of marketshare. There are plenty of decent search engines out there that are free that would love for Google to go pay because of all the new users they'd get who didn't want to pay.
The MSN search would also likely rise to near the top of search engines.
Well, they already use this marketing data to profit. It allows them to better target their paid advertisements. However what you mention in the second part is kind of like.....when people do trend research, they always look for the coolest people in malls and such, and base things off of them. This would kind of be the same barometer but for the internet. Interesting concept. But since there is such a variety of searches, it is almost impossible to seperate the wheat from the chaff.
LOL, gotta love slashdot. Whenever there is something with the potential to invade privacy (but hasn't yet) everybody freaks out and claims its the devil. Then, when someone actually starts doing something like that......they get upset that they're not being tracked.
To parent, I would say, cheer up! Just because they aren't tracking you, does not make your tinfoil hat any less important, nor does it mean Big Brother is not watching you. Try doing a few google searches for anti-government things. Perhaps you'll get a counter then.
I'll just be glad for some change.....I bought the stock when I thought it was at a bargain......which was shortly followed by them laying off 4000 people and having management issues.
I think this is a great idea and as a shareholder I'll be glad to see MOT do something to improve its situation for once.
I had the pleasure of gaming with him and his children (now grown up and excellent DMs) in Lake Geneva, WI every weekend for a couple years. He is as famous in gaming circles as he is for good reason. He is an excellent DM, and its not just his gaming skills that are good, its his people/social skills as well. One often forgets when looking at D&D as a game that it requires many social skills which would be contrary to the image of the typical D&D geek.
You have been found guilty of reading Forbidden Book #8143. Please remain seated and put down any objects you may have in your hands. An enforcement team will arrive to arrest you shortly.
Listen you little troll, where do you get off accusing ME of not being a geek. You're the one trolling, jesus if anybody isn't a geek its you. And what about my post gave you the impression that I was attempting to "simulate technical knowledge"? There was nothing technical about my statement.
In fact, the whole thing was a humorous post, which apparently did not slip past your "uber-geek" brain filter.
Well, I wasn't trying to conceal anything. I was not speaking of myself, I WAS in fact speaking of the people I mentioned. I however have downloaded things in the past. But it usually IS indeed to sample. If there is a playable demo that gives me a good feel for the game, I'll play that instead. Hell, last year I played the bf1942 demo for an entire school year before I got the money to buy the game (which I now have). Things like music....I'll download for other reasons. Anything owned by RIAA affiliated labels is fair game. But often times I download the Essential Mix from the BBC which is unavailable anywhere else, even through them. So this is the only way I can get them. And I download episodes of shows I can't watch (if I don't have cable, or there are no DVDs of it out yet).
Good news.....FINALLY! I swear to god...you read/. for a couple weeks.....and the news is so forboding sometimes that you think the headline tomorrow is going to be "APOCOLYPSE! WE'RE ALL GOING TO DIE!". Then a story like this comes along and makes me cheer and gives me a glimmer of hope. Makes me feel like I'm manic depressive.
Damn the Goddess of Geekdom, she is a fickle mistriss!

Because now many people still think that if you want another copy of the CD, you have to buy it.
They meant it enhances revenue for the label because it will hopefully deter people from pirating...and not buying the CD.
And count yourself lucky that she didn't have any invisible sharks on hand either.

Well, if we're making rodent comparisons......I'm certainly glad Big Blue has their gang of NYC rats going after SCO. THey're gonna tear them apart.
In fact, the whole thing was a humorous post, which apparently did not slip past your "uber-geek" brain filter.
Bloody trolls.
Yeah right...the only OS you'll ever get to fill an 8GB DVD is the next iteration of Windows.
My friend read your reply, and said, "Don't worry, Lando will blow it up and save us all."
To which I replied, "Lando is a fictional character who doesn't exist."
He got a very hurt, very serious look on his face and replied in a very shakey voice, "Lando WILL save us all!"
I made my exit from the computer lab shortly after for fear he would go wookie on me and rip my arms off.
Damn the Goddess of Geekdom, she is a fickle mistriss!
