Um, hey troll, why don't you RTFA before you go about accusing someone of being an astroturfer. Its pretty obvious from the way he wrote his story post that he was quoting the website.
Just to confirm my suspicions (since it was pretty obvious from his use of italics) I checked the link and sure enough, it was the first paragraph he quoted.
So while it is entirely possible that he is an astroturfer...it seems very unlikely, especially with the vaporware comment at the end and since the suspicious part that you highlighted was a direct quote off their website.
I knew it was a joke. I apologize if that post seemed targeted at you, but it was more of a general response to that kind of statement since I'd seen it popping up a bunch, and just chose your post to comment on.
As for the caps, I normally don't use bad netiquette like that, but the arrogance of the idea got to me enough to make me post like that.
Quite possibly. In fact, I think its inevitable as this is a good way to help hinder piracy. Its a lot harder to pirate something where you have no physical copy, and the hardware is locked down. Not saying it wouldn't happen still, but it would definitely make it more difficult.
Well, I don't have actual numbers to back me up, but as I work in marketing/advertising, perhaps I can explain how this is valuable beyond the sales or loyalty.
You see, what this does is give Apple and U2 an excuse to get a LOT of free press. Thats one of the primary reasons you see so many of these. It gets them in the headlines, which in turn might boost sales or build brand loyalty.
The real measure would be to calculate the cost of how much free advertising they're going to get from this, which I imagine would be a pretty substantial figure.
I remember a story a while back about an interesting patent Apple had filed (if someone wants to do the legwork, by all means...) a patent for a device that lets you change the color through LEDs or something like that. This would in theory let you change the color of the case of all their computers and the iPod, and would be a much better seller than just one color.
100k entities? Battlefield:1942 eat your heart out.
Seriously though, this is good for gamers, because this technology will inevitably end up in our games. Planetside tried to make a FPS with that many players, and while their cone of fire killed it (among other things), I definitely see FPSs going in that direction in the future, especially with the increasing availability of broadband.
I've always wanted to have large historic battles, but since the numbers of soldiers were so large back then, it wasn't really feasible for a FPS, but now perhaps they could do it after all. Can you say Battle of Helms Deep with every character being a real person?
The real challenge comes in making sure everybody goes along with it. If all the good natured people were to stop studying war, we would be defenseless if the ill-natured people were to want to conquer us.
Thanks for posting. No way in hell I'm going to register with Gamespot just for a trailer that is on the official website. Yet another slashvertisement...
The flaw is that you are taking up the same arrogant stance as the people who created this device. IT IS NOT YOUR DAMN RIGHT TO DECIDE WHAT I CAN AND CANNOT USE. We have laws that determine it.
If you are really so incapable of using words to get people to turn their cellphone off, then I think there are more serious problems. And please don't assume I'm talking about jammers and such in theaters and the like, thats a whole nother can of worms.
People do things that annoy other people, it does NOT give you the right to enforce your view on them.
Except when you lower your price, you lower your profit margin, and you would need that many more sales to compensate, so its really not as simple as that. Its more of a fine balancing act.
While I still think you are trolling, I will bite.
I love the comments on here. And yes, I browse at +3, so most of what I'm getting is actually worth reading. There's a reason that we have an inside joke on here about not RTFA. Its because the real value of the site is in the comments.
"The simple truth is that the owners dupe hordes of people into believing they're getting a fair wage, when in fact they are donating the better part of the value of their labor to The Man."
If that is the case, then Darwin applies. Sorry, we don't all get to win, we don't all get to be rich and happy (not that one is dependant on the other).
If someone is too ignorant to realize when they're getting ripped off (such as being paid an unfare wage) or refuses to do something to change the situation, then I really have little sympathy for them, especially if they continuously bitch and moan about conspiracy theories of the rich and famous.
I actually wouldn't be surprised if they used the Level Loading screens on some games (like bf1942 etc) to display ads while the level loads. Of course the ethical line is very fine. Do you make it a set time on the loading screen? Or do you just load it as fast as the computer can?
If my game makes me wait longer to finish displaying an ad, thats a game I will return.
When was the last time a company decided "hey, we have another potential revenue stream for our product, lets use it to subsidize lowering the cost of our product for our customers!"
Yet another Roland story. You know, you'd think that if there was enough outrage about this (which I'm SURE the editors are more than aware of) they would have the common decency to listen to their readership instead of just posting more Roland stories.
For as much as I love Slashdot, there exists little recourse for people who want their input on the site to be heard, even when its on as large a scale as the current hatred of Roland posts.
Ever hear of the 15/85 rule? Its from How to Win Friends and Influence People by Dale Carnegie. Those figures are from a study of engineers they conducted where they determined whether it was technical knowledge or people skills that got you ahead. The results were that its 15% technical skills, 85% people skills.
I really do get sick of the bitching and moaning on here when people get upset that they aren't getting ahead in their path because the system is broken. Guess what, in this regard the system CAN'T be broken because no one person determines what the system is. THIS IS THE SYSTEM. Don't bitch if you're not willing to play the game. Life isn't fair, nobody owes you anything, and you get ahead in life through the connections you make. Sorry to tell you that the answer isn't found in lines of code, but instead is found in conversations with actual people.
I really don't mean this as a troll mods, but there's always one person like the grandparent who posts something like this in these stories and what the parent and I have explained is one of the most valuable lessons a young techy can learn, and the earlier they learn it the better.
'What makes a program or a company successful is what you do _after_ you have the cool algorithm or hack. Like user interface. Or like usability."
Or like nobody on here wants to admit, Marketing.
Without marketing nobody ever hears about your project no matter how cool the algorithm, hack, or user interface, or usability. Remember, its not enough to just have the best, you need people to KNOW you have the best.
Hmmm.....for a second here I thought I was reading AdAge.
For a webpage with a lot of members who hate advertising, it sure is interesting to see how many stories about advertising we have and how many slashvertisements we get.
I agree. I used to drive an hour every weekend up to Lake Geneva, WI to play with the Gygax family at the Game Guild. Sadly I think the store went under, and I know the Gygax's haven't exactly made it rich off D&D.
There really is something to be said for sitting at a table discussing Bigby's line of spells and finding out the guy sitting next to you played the original Bigby, and the guy across the table played the original Mordenkainen.
That was hands down the best group of gamers I've ever gamed with in my life. I'd like to give the Gygax family a big warm thank you for filling my highschool years with creativity and a place where I fit in.
I actually hate LARP for a different reason. I find that players become even worse powergamers in that setting as opposed to D&D. While there is political intrigue, eventually, everything comes down to chops, and while chops is basically rolling the dice, the only way to really affect outcome is to stack the hell out of your character.
Having played and DMed D&D for many years, I thought I had seen the worst of powergaming.....boy was I wrong......The fact that many of the rules are fairly vague makes it even worse
We are, well, us good ones are. Believe it or not, many of us marketing professionals actually try to do our job well and respect the public. We feel the best way to get customers is to gain their respect, and we try to accomplish this through useful, creative campaigns that do not annoy people.
I know this may be hard for you to believe, but we have some VERY intelligent people in the industry and not all of them are devoted to how to get the quickest buck out of you.
The best realize that a happy customer equals a repeat customer. And that an annoyed person never becomes a customer.

In Roland's case though....I wonder if he even makes money seeing as how nobody RTFA.
As for the caps, I normally don't use bad netiquette like that, but the arrogance of the idea got to me enough to make me post like that.
Apologies again for the miscommunication.

I was just commenting on how out of place it seemed to have this Story on Slashdot.
For a webpage with a lot of members who hate advertising, it sure is interesting to see how many stories about advertising we have and how many slashvertisements we get.
