So you want developers to innovate in a niche market where a sports title tries to be as close to reality as possible?
mutant league football was gimmicky; it was not innovative. Sega Sports and EA sports(and every other sports gaming studio) are in the sports gaming segment of the industry to produce sports games.
While innovating the game to make it more fun and at the same time a more realistic expierience is what everyone wants, taking away the one thing ( a license in this case) that helps the company sell that title will pretty much kill all competitors who dont hold that license.
These days people indirectly buy sports because of the license, not in spite of. What happened 10 or 15 years ago happened at a time when it didnt matter, cause everyone just wanted to play. No superstars or logos, etc in a sports game today will make that game doomed to fail. My opinion anyways. You can argue that people will buy the next sega football game without all the players and stadiums, but i doubt Joe Xbox will want to take the time to actually customize the game unless its as simple as simply buying Madden would be.
What one second. If a game is going to keep me playing it and it only costs me 15 bucks a month to do so, i will take it in a heartbeat. It sure beats spending 200 bucks a month on 4 games alone(having all 3 current generation consoles).
WOW has done that for me. I thought the same thing before i started playing MMORPG's, but the simple fact is that if you are actually going to play it, and continue to do so, it costs less in the long run.
I have a modded xbox but unlike others who use it to pirate games, i use it for the other things it provides, such as XBMC(wife loves having her pics on the laptop viewable on the big screen tv), stepmania(which is much better than the equivalent commercial products), and other homebrew software.
Plus most of the games i purchase are used to play online with friends. You cant get on live with the chip on without getting banned, therefore you cant run games off the HD. Can you pirate single player games? sure. Can you pirate games which has both? of course, but i just dont play these types of games as much as i play online.
Yes i know about kai, etc. but trying to get about 30 people(different types of games) to use something other than live, with its ease of use, is not worth the hassle.
Sports gamers do not want creativity in their sports. Each year all that happens is that they get more demanding because game 'X' doesnt produce a realistic 'y' feature. If anything its the exact opposite. Most want to game as true to life as humanly possible. If the developers can't keep up, then they are bashed.
The trend that has started the last few years is that some gamers will pick up a couple of games in the same type of sport to not miss out on features one game has over the other.
I would really like to see how many people would change the rules of a particular sports game. Interesting, but all you will hear is how can the developer spend time on this feature and not incorporate 'x' feature.
They can always buy EVE and slap the star trek license on it.
By the way, i got dibs on the name "Welshy".

wasnt he also a fumigator in donkey kong 3? or was that a distant relative or something?
Well I, for one, welcome our new evil alien overlords.
As long as these evil alien overlords finish SCO off, then the global takeover wont be as bad as people thought.
