For the last couple decades the major networks have not only ignored men, but have been actively adverse to men. E.g., fathers are almost always portrayed as morons both on shows and in advertisements, while women are beautiful, intelligent, and generally perfect.

And let's face this simple truth: TV sucks. I can think of a million things I'd rather do than to sit around and watch broadcast television! God, it's just painful! My wife watches shows such as "Everyone Loves Raymond." It's excruciating, even in small bits. In all honestly, I'd rather have a root canal than watch that drivel!

I did say "essentially." Sure there are other games for the PC, e.g., The Sims. But other than the Sims, can you think of non-FPS games that sell as well as Quake or Unreal based games?

  7. Consoles will win out on Online Consoles Marginalizing PC Gaming? · · Score: 2, Interesting

The main problem with PC gaming is too much diversity.

PCs sold today come with either those crappy integrated graphics or advanced GPUs from ATi and nVidia. And even those with good graphics systems have would have a wide varieties of drivers installed, which means that some features are enabled and some are not.

Also, most PCs sold do not come with controllers and/or joysticks. And if the user buys such devices, there are numerous brands to consider.

There are also various sound cards, processors, etc., each with different features that gaming authors may or may not be able to take advantage of.

If you want to sell games for the PC, and you if you want to sell a lot of them, you're essentially forced to aim for the lowest common denominator. Only a handful of gaming publishers can sell high quality games without pandering to crappy computers.

And lets face it; there are essentially only two gaming engines for the PC, id's Quake and Epic's Unreal. When Carmack quits to devote himself fulltime to getting into space (which will happen after Doom3) that'll leave only one engine left. And let's face it, without Carmack, OpenGL will be dead on the PC too.

Thanks for the news. It's nice to know that Wal-Mart is taking a step in the right direction.

As far as I'm concerned (and I'll admit I'm nobody) for it to be truly successful Wal-Mart would have to allow users to get burned CDs. While I imagine that most /.'s are like me, and rarely listen to music on CD, the vast majority of US consumers still do. Opening up that option would open the flood gates.

  12. As I've said at the original launch on Wal-Mart Relaunches Online Music Store · · Score: 4, Insightful

Wal-Mart could make a killing if it offered kiosks in its stores where you could download and burn music. There are a lot of people who don't use computers, are ignorant about computers, who don't own burners, etc, but would LOVE to buy various CDs of their favorite songs.

And Wal-Mart could force the music industry to go along with the deal. If some label refused, Wal-Mart could simply refuse to stock their entire catalog. No label could survive being shutout by Wal-Mart!

  19. Re:File sharing does NOT increase sales... on File Sharing Increases CD Sales · · Score: 3, Insightful

Actually, you're wrong. I have bought MUCH more music since peer-to-peer than before it. Radio sucks so much I can never hear anything good. But nowadays, any artist I hear about I can sample before I buy.

Also, on a larger level independent labels are selling a lot more music because people actually have an ability to hear their music. For the first time ever radio isn't the only means to hear new music!

The main problem facing any music artist is not peer-to-peer, it's lack of exposure. Peer-to-peer helps those artists who cannot get exposure through normal means, e.g., radio and MTV. Peer-to-peer only hurts those relevantly huge stars that get tons of exposure, and the bottom line of major record labels who relies on huge stars.
