I very recently read an article about how in Africa,treatments for AIDS have finally come down to an affordable level.
That is, until they stop being effective after a few years. Then they have to switch to a different set of treatments that the African gov't doesn't have a hope in hell of covering without turning their budget into mashed turnips.
Bad analogy. The ones and zeros in banking software directly translate to cash you can get from the bank. The digital data is the exact same abstraction of money that a cheque is.
Virtual islands do not translate to anything in the real world. If the ASP that hosts your island goes belly up, then so does your island.
There's a big difference between an abstraction of something that exists in the real world, and something that has no real world counterpart.
I know this was modded funny, but it's not entirely a joke. There's a growing sentiment that Canada is being pushed around by the States. The US refusal to hand over $5 billion in duties that, as declared by the top NAFTA panel, it illegally took. Getting Canada to extradite citizens to the US when they have broken no Canadian laws, Deity Of Your Choice knows what else. This is just the latest in a long line of American bullshit being forced upon Canada.
What I find truly funny is how quick the US is to throw blame on Canada for *everything*. Canada encourages terrorits. Canada caused the The Great Blackout (which was a bald-faced lie, and I don't recall any appologies given later, either)
It really bothers me that the US just *expects* everyone will roll over and do whatever the US says, to happily take abuse and mud slung from the US. And then when the US doesn't get it's way, like a 2 year old it throws temper tantrum and decimates other countries.
And the American people wonder why no one else in the world likes them...
If you've ever read the advertisements for various other things in the realm of naturopathy and newagey type stuff, the description of BatMax is like deja vu.
I don't remember where it was, but I once saw a company selling what were essentially $300 glorified extension cords which supposedly improved the performance of *any electric device* you plugged into it.
For those that have difficulty relating to the ADD experience, imagine this:
I'm making sweet love with your SO. I know I have trouble focusing so you do everything in your power to concentrate on the task at hand. It feels really good, so smooth, so silky. It's just like that really good cheesecake you had in a restaurant the other week. And raspberry sauce. The cake had this wonderful raspberry sauce that you just couldn't get enough of. And, oh gods! The glob of real whipped cream. It was a pretty good restaurant all round actually.

I did remember to finish that report, right? Yeah, I did. Mmmm, physical sensations. All right, we're making progress here! We're climbing... climbing... getting near the peak! All... the... world sings in tune on a spring afternoon as we're poisoning pigeons in the park! Every Sunday you'll see, my sweetheart and me, as we poison the pigeons in the park!
It's usually around this point I groan and go play a video game.
