I am less worried about their mutation as I am about the implications of engineering an enterprise at this level to *potentially* save a couple of hundred lives every year. I think we have bigger problems more deserving of the money that will be used to manufacture the spray in question. From what I read, the greatest danger is presented to the average consumer as cold cuts. However, the article fails to specify whether the "500 deaths per year" is national, continental, or global. My assumption would be that it is global, which raises the other eyebrow for me because of the sheer number of people who already cannot afford to eat, and this process is not going to be deployed on the cheap.

I just don't think (even if the number is 500/yr in the USA) that the expense is justified.

Having said that, I do agree with you wholeheartedly, that they have the capacity to mutate and this could be breeding another "super bug." I just do not think it is as important as the cost/benefit (ack, I just used marketspeak) issue.

I've got the mod points for it, but I seriously couldn't pass this up. You say you'd switch to Ubuntu? You are already in the minority!

You don't give a shit about Vista, but guess what? Microsoft doesn't give a shit about you! Whether you want to run Vista or not, you either will, or you will stop playing games. First of all, you will not drive the adoption of Vista, OEMs will. No new PCs without Vista installed. Regular, everyday, ignorant people who cannot grasp the difference between megabytes and megahertz. As the new system gains ground, developers will target XP less and less, and before too long, Microsoft will announce the end of the XP product lifecycle.

Microsoft has hedged its bets correctly: You are not about to quit gaming, so you will upgrade. Whether you want to or not, you will pay them for the privilege.

As for myself, I am only a casual gamer. And I do happen to run Ubuntu, which is more than capable of delivering more gaming capacity than I happen to need. I also periodically have to upgrade my operating system, due to security issues or end-of-life with the current edition. Such upgrades (thus far) have never impacted my hardware requirements, and they do not require me to buy a new PC or a license to upgrade for $150.

I cannot reply to your comment as a hardcore gamer, because that's not what I am. However, I am in a definite minority, and we have that much in common.

The US and A government claims itself to be Christian. Does that make it so? Not in the smallest.

I know GW Bush claims to be Christian, but when it comes down to the metal, Christ never said "Thou shalt invade foreign nations for economic gain" or anything of the like. Bush does not represent Christianity, though he claims to so do.

Christ said "turn the other cheek," not "If it suits you, declare war." Bush claims to represent Christian values and ends, but is not one smidgeon better than the terrorists he claims to oppose.

If you want a smear campaign, you need not worry. It is already there. If you want to examine reality? I wonder whether John Q. Public is capable of doing so without prejudice.

Wrong on so many levels. Being the fan of the original game that I am, I can tell you that no locks get shot off in the game, ever, at all. Solid Snake's "arsenal" (which, in my memory was varied and useful) was used to shoot up guards, guard dogs, blow up tanks, and the like. Locked doors were *always* opened via the use of various key cards (numbered 1-8). If at any time you approached a locked door without the appropriate key card as your active item, the door did not open. There was no lock to shoot off.

The later Metal Gear games? I did not like Snake's revenge, and never really played any of the Metal Gear Solid games... they might have lock-shooting action. But Metal Gear? I have to question the authority of the writer on this one, because as somebody else points out, simple game titles and publishers aren't even cited correctly.

Logically speaking, this is a fallacy. Morals are not justification for evil behaviour, they are justification for good behaviour. The fact that some people claim that their evil behaviour is somehow moral is simply not true. To them, it may be ethical, but that does not make it moral. I suspect, though, that you were taking a broad stroke at organised religion (though I admit the possibility that you were not). Religion, like any number of other things, is often used as an excuse for war. I doubt it has ever actually been the *reason* for war. Again, I do realise that you might not be saying that, but it appears to be a fairly common (more appropriately, unfairly common) belief. Whether Ghengis Khan went to church every week would not change his desire for more wealth and more women.

Instead of giving an exact time for the auction's end, give a fuzzy time (This auction will end in 3 days). Then, on the last day, never give an exact time (This auction will end between 1:30pm and 2:00pm), where 1:30 would have been the time you had initially posted the item for sale. You get a few free minutes of publicity on your item, and nobody knows when the auction ends, which would change sniping into a matter of pure luck.

One of the quotes attributed (perhaps falsely, but is still a great quote) to Benjamin Franklin is "Any society that would give up a little liberty to gain a little security will deserve neither and lose both."

My point is that it is indeed a tragedy when parents do not rise to their task of parenting, or that mistakes are made with all good intention. But I don't want the NSA wiretapping my phone and illegally monitoring my internet activity because your illegitimate daughter is positioning herself to be sexually assaulted via the WWW. If you have nothing to hide, please give me live camera feeds to every room in your house.
