  1. I don't think anyone would expect that of first generation immigrants. Having suffered through the Detroit public school system until 6th grade, it was good that my parents moved because I doubt most Detroit HS grads are reading at 8th grade level. I suspect it's that way in many districts across the nation.

Don't feel sorry for me. I'm 60, and posted about my upcoming retirement last night. 45 of my friends have already responded. And no, I don't have FB friends that I barely know. And yes, I know FB is a shithole, but I've yet to see a good alternative when your friends are spread all over the country, and a few in other countries.

I'm not in any way disagreeing with you. Clearly writers and publishers want to maximize their income. I'm just saddened that we have to stoop to such a low level.

The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development found that 50 percent of U.S. adults can't read a book written at an eighth-grade level.

So, no admins, mail room, etc? Most every large company has some low paid folks. And pretty much every type of franchise business too. Small businesses are frequently living on the edge, which is one of the reasons so many of them fail. So, it's critical for them to keep their overhead costs down...including office supplies. Obviously, you have to do something to keep employee moral up too, but there are plenty of options there.
