You've got the right idea, but the Uncertainty Principle puts a lower bound on the mutual uncertainties in time and energy measured...

You are right, but at the same time the grandparent is correct too. From statistical considerations, it is not too hard to see that the uncertainty principle actually gives you an RMS value of energy or time, (or position or momentum). Because of this, you can use actual measurements (as opposed to their standard error) to do order of magnitude calculations of other quantities, say use momentum to estimate position. This gives you a rough measure of the magnitude of the quantities.

It is encouraging to see a big security industry leader such as Microsoft make such a public display of its unwavering belief that security through obscurity is not security at all - by publishing an open document on its security infrastructure. Perhaps other large players could take a cue from this (IBM, Sun)?

  4. Bad idea on Attacking the Spammer Business Model · · Score: 1
This idea is stupid because if such a response system was in place, people could easily abuse it to launch large scale DDOS's on any site they desire. All it would require would be a mass email (which is apparently rather easy to get away with) with a link to whomever they wanted to take down. Assuming the system response was to spider any links in the mail, the target would go down in flames. People could even use it to attack the whitehouse! Let's try not give terrorists more ways to attack us.

The real interesting question is.. who's responsible for the attack? The person who sent off the mail or the legion of huffing, red in the face computer jockeys who bombarded the site?

Remember, the job of deterring the spammer is that of law enforcement, and the reason why the internet is in such a bad state is from all those cowboy vigilante sysadmins, just shootin' from their goddamned hips. Now I know that our love for vigilantism has its root in our Constitution, because in America we have the (god given) right to arm ourselves for self defense, and possibly respond in a sufficiently violent manner to ward off attacks or any sort of personal affront, but this does not apply to the internet. Sometimes you have to think of the community and respond peacefully.

  10. MOZILLA IS TRYING TO KILL MNG on Mozilla 1.5 Beta Released · · Score: 2, Informative
I thought that this is something that requires attention here on slashdot. In the newer releases of mozilla (>v1.4) they have either crippled or eliminated the support for the MNG image format. See bug 18574, and see the furor that this has caused amongst Mozilla users.

You may have noticed that this is the MOST VOTED ON BUG ever in Mozilla but the people in charge are dragging their feet about this one. It is truly shameful. This is the only Free alternative to gif, and provides features that go above and beyond the gif standard. To any quibblers out there who say that patents on gif have expired, they are not entirely correct. Patents still exist in countries outside the US, and so anything that is not completely Free, is just that, not Free.

I wholeheartedly suggest that anyone who cares about open standards and formats get a bugzilla account and vote or post comments on this issue, otherwise Mozilla will kill MNG by either not supporting it or supporting some bastardised version of the standard.

Sorry to say this, but you're dead wrong. A tetrachromat woman has one 'faulty' allele and one good one. As is the case with many recessive genes, the recessive allele is expressed alongside the dominant one. Instead of a green cone, the recessive allele gives one a red-shifted-green cone. So a tetrachromat female ends up with both, along with a red and a blue cone type.

(as it turns out though, most recessive alleles code for proteins which don't do their job properly, in which case the 'dominant' one, if present, ends up 'masking' the recessive one because it still allows for the creation of the useful form of the protein)
